Fun Fact: The series went EXACTLY the way Sam Raimi wanted it to. The first movie was straight horror. The second movie was horror with comedic elements. The third movie was comedy with horror elements. It's meant to represent Ash's sanity slipping away over the course of the series and him becoming too jaded and traumatized by what he's experienced to be scared anymore. Since we experience the story from his perspective, just like him, it stops being scary and starts becoming darkly funny as he hides from the trauma in humor and his ability to be afraid kind of goes away.

No that's not what Sam intended originally. He was just going to jump straight into Army of Darkness after he got a producer for a second film. The producer told him no and that he had to make another cabin in the woods sequel to The Evil Dead. Ash's personality changes were just natural as they fan reactions.

@@marcbloom7462 Oh yeah, Bubba Ho-Tep is awesome albeit slightly more serious yet brilliant. Don Coscarelli should be taken more serious by the movie biz since his movies are iconic (if a bit confusing when it comes to Phantasm II-V due to all the jumping between scenes). He also wrote "John Dies at the End" and we were waiting for the sequel to Bubba Ho-Tep: "Bubba Nosferatu - Curse of the She-Vampires" which was cut down by Bruce Campbell in 2017: ""I killed it, I killed it for me. I told the creators that I didn’t want to dance around it anymore. I feel that the first one was a nice little gem and you don’t have to make a sequel for everything. Don Coscarelli, god bless him, go make it. You know, get somebody else. They had Ron Perlman at one point. Knock yourself out. I don’t want to stop you from making this, but I don’t want to [do it]. So, that one I’m just going to let go." During his book tour (when he said this in an interview) he did seem quite bitter at the time; not about/against Don, just about the movie industry as a whole that seemingly didn't take him seriously as well as being so connected to Ash by his fans that he felt trapped by the character/typecasting. He's done quite a lot of tv shows including the 3 season Ash vs Evil Dead show which starts off a bit slow but picks up and feels like the Ash we love. There are also upcoming movies including the comedy/horror "Black Friday", a drama/thriller about Nixon called "18 1/2" where Bruce plays Richard Nixon. Bruce Campbell made a movie in 2007 named "My Name is Bruce" which is well worth a watch: "Mistaken for his character Ash from the 'Evil Dead' trilogy, Bruce Campbell is forced to fight a real monster in a small Oregon town."

I absolutely agree with Emily that the S-Mart ending is superior. And it's not even close. It's not only one of the best sequences in this movie, but it's one of the most quintessential "Ash" sequences in the entire lore with some of the best one-liners. (It's a toss-up between this scene and "Who's laughing now?" from Evil Dead 2.) This is an instance in which the more mainstream studio ending was the right call.
@Rocket1377
@Rocket1377 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The dark ending just doesn't fit the comedic tone they were going for in this movie. I would love them to release a version of this film where they edit both endings together. Ash falls asleep in the cave, has the nightmare, then wakes up in the present day and goes back to his job at S-Mart. It could easily be done using the existing footage.

@@geraldn51 that was The Evil Dead 1&2. I thought the same thing myself when this came out (though the term had not yet been coined). I remember seeing trailers for a man with a chainsaw hand when I was a kid but had never seen the movie. I was eighteen when AoD came out and I was like, “Why do I have the feeling I’ve seen this somewhere before?” I think they weren’t allowed to use the Evil Dead name because another studio had the rights. Much like they couldn’t use S-Mart in the TV show for the same reasons.

The whole Franchise is extremely well done I think and highly consistent in it's quality, but I think Army of Darkness might just be perfect (and surprisingly family friendly for an R-Rated Franchise) :D It is also one of the very rare cases were the cinematic version and the directors cut are equally good and offer different point of views for a watch, though the cinematic version fits perfectly with the amazing series! The TV show "Ash vs Evil Dead" is a great continuation of the story, and revels in Evil Dead 2 style "campy grossness". I kind of like the name "Evil Deadite" but you should be aware that I once named a beer-based cocktail "Anal Seepage" so take my recommendations with skepticism.

@@eldeano9964 Well, at the time I thought it was one more example of my Super Awesome skill at naming stuff but the consensus in the Lamestream Media was that while it described the look of the cocktail perfectly, it also made people think about what it looked like, therefore leading to vomit from the weak willed.

There's something about animated skeletons that makes undead armies inherently hilarious.

I think they're puppets moved in a way to invoke stop motion. That used to be the technique to do monsters on all the old fantasy and legend and adventure movies, when they didn't put a guy in a suit. Today it's used in animation, see Nightmare before Christmas and the Wallace and Gromit movies.

The way to animate the skeletons in this film is a kind of tribute to the skeletons of the 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts.

I like all of them but this one is my favourite just because they really embraced the madness and one liners and humour that still holds up. And the whole army of muttering skeletons, I mean, its the best. *angry dooting*

Since I've bought no less than 3 versions of this movie on DVD (plus a VHS copy) I have to mention something. Everybody loves the whole "good, bad, I'm the one with the gun" thing but the alternate line *BOOM* "I ain't that good" is soo much better.

Great to see you guys back reacting! I remember seeing the original Evil Dead when it came to VHS back in the mid 80's and being totally confused by the Evil Dead Part 2 lol. Something for you to watch, maybe not on the list per se, Gamers; The Dorkness Rises and Journeyquest both from Zombie Orpheus Entertainment. I gather you both role play or are familiar with the genre and those series are comedy gold.

I'm watching this like three years late, but... I have to be that guy and say that, while Danny Elfman did work on this movie, he only created one piece of music for it, which is 'The March of the Dead'. The rest of the music is done by Joseph Loduca, who did the music for the first two films, the TV show in 2015, and the main theme for the 2020 video game.

I worked at a video store with over 10,000 movies twenty years ago. My employee picks movie shelf had this movie on it. I don't know how many times I recommended this movie, but I recommended it to almost everyone. Those same customers always wanted recommendations after watching Army of Darkness. This movie used to be my all time favorite movie, until it became very popular, and it still is one my favorite movies. It's just weird how many people know it today, compared to back then. I remember watching a making of this movie, before it came out, and it had the last fight scene where Good Ash and Evil Ash. This was back in 91 or 92. And, that fight scene really wanted me to watch that movie. I think it was on TBS or TNT or some channel like. The cellar scene from Evil Dead was recorded in my neck of the woods in Marshall, Michigan, which I didn't know until years later. One of my other all time favorite movies is Commando, I think it might have the most kills in any movie or something like that, but still has some of the best one liners.

This was a riot watching in a cinema. The corny dialogue and slapstick acting just gelled in a unique way. Emily is correct in saying that the skeleton army definitely had personality. I've never seen another movie with animated skeletons that made me laugh so much.

So good to see you guys again. Probably had some personal stuff to take care of. Anyway, I enjoyed this film as it's my personal favorite in the entire series. The ending to the movie Actually sets up the TV spinoff Ash Vs Evil Dead which was cancelled after 3 seasons from 2016-2018. There are even talks of a fourth film in the series, too.

Ay welcome back! And what a movie to come back with! So much fun. As a kid I think this was the first one I saw of the three so it has stuck with me the most. I also like the S-Mart ending. For me it makes sense that he'd still get the words wrong; yeah he got back to his own time, but now the Deadites have followed him. And, in his own way, he is a king.
