The Army is doing away with the "mean, nasty" shark attack in Basic Training. No more screaming "get off my buss" on day one. A kinder, gentler Army is on the horizon. That's what Command Sergeant Major Fortenberry thinks. All those old timers complaining about the Military being soft is now a fact. What leaders are we as NCOs if we don't stand up and correct those above us, who implement ridiculous practices such as this. Angry Drill SGT creates a Shark attack of his own and goes deep into the SGM. and a special friend from the Marine Corp assists me.

Absolutely right, warfare is just like call of duty modern warfare. In fact, we should make 360’ quick scope a mandatory training event in the infantry. We should also enforce any cursing/swearing/comments that potentially hurt others’ feelings to be punishable by UCMJ.

@liquidbraino

@@joaoruiz3486 Signal Corps is pretty easy going. I was a 31-F in the Army. All of our equipment has to be maintained at a certain temperature so while everyone else is burning up in 130 degree heat we've got it made in the shade BUT... your combat boots better look like black mirrors and your uniform better look sharp. They're usually a bit tougher on grooming standards in Signal units. BTW - we jokingly call Fort Jackson "relaxin Jackson" but my Drill Sergeant was in Special Forces. It was anything but relaxing in our company (E 2/39) but the further down you went - closer to Alpha company it seemed like they were a lot easier on them. I once saw a Drill Sergeant in Alpha tell a soldier to get up from the table in the chow hall - soldier said "but I'm not done yet" and I was waiting for the shark attack to happen, looking over my shoulder - Drill Sergeant said "Ok" and walked away. I couldn't fucking believe my eyes. If I tried that with my own drill sergeant he'd have stomped my guts out and EVERYONE would have been punished for a week. I'd have probably ended up getting a blanket party for something like that - we gave one guy a blanket party just because he wasn't keeping his area clean; leaving dust bunnies and coat hangers on the floor near his locker.

I was in AIT as a 13F, the training was so lax and nobody gave a shit about it that the freaking 1-star had to come into the battery. The 1-star general had to pay a personal visit to the battery to tell fisters to step up the training. That's just sad.

According to some vets I talk to, the problem isn't really the Shark Attack, the problem is a number of drill instructors Shark Attacking recruits the instant they get off the bus before they've had time to settle in, adjust, and center themselves. They're being done too early and time poorly by DIs who who haven't been trained correctly. Studies have shown that first impressions are important and set the tone for boot camp. A bad first impression means that the DI is not viewed as tough, just abusive. He's not a teacher, he's a bully. He's not making you tougher, he's beating you into submission. Bonding through shared suffering is replaced by fear, hatred and resentment. So maybe banning it was a bad idea, but that doesn't mean there weren't legitimate issues with its use.
@zezaekrael

@@Scriptedviolince you're right. First impressions are very important. I'd say they are so important that the very first impression a pickle should get coming off the bus is just what a difficult and challenging experience they are about to have with the realization that they're going to have to get used to a lot of stress in a hurry. Almost like the first impression a shark attack leaves .... hmmm.

@@zezaekrael if it's well executed. If it's poorly executed you just get 120 recruits who don't want to be in the army anymore. And there's only so much damage that patriotism (or desperation) can blunt. The army already has retention issues with soldiers who want to be there, and DIs with bad training and big heads only hurt that.

As a soilder you need to be able to adapt to any situation even if your not prepared for it. I woulsnt be the SGT I am today if it wasnt for going through the basic I went through. If they worked so good we wouldn't see so many suffering from PTSD. The reality is that no one can prepare you for how you're going to react. One day you might be cool, the other you might panic, it all depends on the situation and the individual. You don't get automatically tougher by having someone yelling at you, it might look good on the surface, but I doubt it's effective at all. If you have undisciplined people they are undisciplined (or unmotivated) for a reason and no amount of yelling will remove that mindset; nor will it prepare them for combat.
@JimCar71

Daniel David PTSD... from combat yes. This isn’t designed to eliminate PTSD and no one is claiming that it does(unless of course those using a straw man argument to prove an unrelated point). This is designed to teach an individual how to tune out chaos and tune in directions. Which is a skill that will bring home more soldiers than making them think they can do it with reaffirming soft drills.
@YeeLeeHaw
@YeeLeeHaw 4 жыл бұрын
@@JimCar71 You do that by doing exercises as this will make them used to the commands and train them as to why you do some things and why you don't do others, not by having some baboon blowing your eardrums out in the belief that it will somehow train the brain to focus. Unless there are some studies of this being even remotely true, I must call this a stubborn myth, due to the reality of how the brain learns things and the time it needs to adjust, you can't make it focus more by throwing an overload of information on it as it has no clear picture of the subject yet. And no one? Basically everyone here are alluding to it being used as a way of "hardening" the men.

Daniel Bateman you just quoted the bible: "He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." When Yehoshua (Jesus) returns some will be living and striving to live in his ways and those who are not will be removed from the earth. Yehoshua says, "As the weeds are collected and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will weed out of His kingdom every cause of sin and all who practice lawlessness. And they will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear." Daniel says, "Many will be purified(changed in their thinking), made spotless(forgiven for their sins), and refined(live accordingly), but the wicked will continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked will understand, but the wise will understand."

They go through a watered down version called "OBC" (officers basic course). I have no idea what that's like because I wasn't an officer but it amused me that every 2nd LT wants to be in charge of shit they don't even understand because they never went through Basic Combat Training and most of them haven't even been through AIT in order to learn an M.O.S. I once had a 2nd LT tell me to leave my Node Center (communications) and go down the hill to grab five gallons of diesel fuel. I told him "no" because I was not allowed to leave my post without getting relieved and he didn't know how to operate the Node Center which is the center of the entire communications network. He had me on the ground doing push-ups and when the Platoon SGT came by and saw me NOT inside my Node Center he asked "what the fuck" was going on - the LT told him and then my Platoon SGT tore that LT a new asshole and told me to get back in the Node Center. He told him "If you ever have a problem with my Node Center operator - you come to me". And that's for a good reason because people can die if communications goes down - even during training. We had two soldiers almost die that same year when their rig rolled down the side of a hill but because they had a working MSRT phone they were able to put in a call to the M.A.S.H. unit which sent a medivac chopper to rescue them - they were in a spot where nobody would have even seen them and they'd have died if communications went down.

@@corpsiecorpsie_the_original It was kinda funny too. Watching a 2nd LT get yelled at by the Platoon Sergeant. All because he wouldn't listen to me - and it's not like I was being disrespectful, I was being polite; trying to explain the situation but I knew my own job (MOS) and he didn't. He didn't realize that I can't just abandon my position without getting relieved and he wasn't qualified to relieve me. I'm not sure if he even had the necessary security clearance to be standing there in my AO.

You know I’ve been thinking about this a lot. In the corps too, the DI’s are continuously told to tone it down. But here’s the thing, the more we do this the more we remove the bond that ties us to each other. SURVIVING boot is one of those things that make Marines, Marines. Same for Army with basic. We get together and know that each of us has been through a literal hell. I mean damn, the Seals have Hellweek. We use those experiences to know that each of us that are serving together have that one thing that we all experienced. That life altering journey of terror, sadness, fear, confusion, and if anyone tells you that they didn’t reach their breaking point in boot or basic then I’ll show you someone that went in as things continue to get softer. You’re supposed to get pushed past breaking. You’re supposed to be pushed beyond your wits. It’s part of the right of passage that we all must endure. To this day my Drill Instructor’s voice has become the voice of my conscience. Every time I’m down and out, I hear him screaming at me that I will push forward. It’s not fair to the new guys coming in to rob them of this. It’s not fair to have them attempt to join a unit full of guys that had a different experience than their own. My dad gives me hell because he served in the Corps from 1966-1968 (something like that) and when I tell him my stories from 1998 he laughs and asks me if I enjoyed summer camp. But he’s got a point. Even then it wasn’t what he endured. And so I was robbed of that experience to an extent. Now it’s just getting silly. Training timeouts, no shark attacks, worried about over stressing the recruits, etc… War doesn’t pause and doesn’t relent. That’s what we’re supposed to be preparing these young people for, so why don’t we?

Okay, now that we have you all here, we'll introduce you to our new method of combat, hugs. The idea behind this is that, the "opponent" is just misunderstood. In the PDF that you will download after the class, it will go over the various hugs, songs and gestures (such as bowing), that you can do to comfort the "opponent". Don't worry about our use of the word "opponent", this class is still in beta -testing and we haven't come up with a politically correct term for that, yet. Anyway, we'll now cover chapter 1. Everyone, grab your comfort items, such as stuffed animals and pillows. We're going to talk about some of the things you might see.

This video struck a chord with me and I really appreciate it. I’ll be honest, refusing an ROTC full ride was in part (but not entirely) due to the summer course I did that was more or less the basic training (LTC at the time), wasn’t difficult enough and didn’t learn what I was hoping to learn ( ie discipline, and doing more than 5 push-ups). That being said, the very few moments the drill sergeants tore into us I vividly remember and as archaic it might sound, wish I had some more. Also, having been told “the military isn’t for everyone” with my decision of refusing the offer, it’s still stamped into my mind after making that decision and can attribute to one of the reasons for rethinking about the ocs route. Thank you for such a good video, and for your service!

The part where AC says they're destroying our history isn't an exaggeration. The concept of harsh punishments for small mistakes and/or breaking small rules (punishments like the "shark attack") was originally instituted by a man named Friederich Wilhem von Steuben, a Purssian military officer who was exiled from his homeland (he was rumored to be gay). George Washington made him in charge of training of the Continental Army at Valley Forge in 1778. Over 2 centuries later, ALL branches of the U.S. military STILL base their basic training off of his format. (Side note, his time as Inspector General was also spent improving the cleanliness of American encampments, which led to more sanitary conditions and less deaths due to disease). Not that the Seargent Major responsible for this clusterf*ck of a decision would know ANYTHING about the Army's history.

The Marines got rid of their Armor, Infantry Units being cut, Air Support Units being cut, Artillery Units being cut and Support units being cut. How the fuck do we expect them to win a War? The Marines are also changing their Boot Camp by integrating women with men during Boot Camp. This is a Political Bullshit!

The PC stuff that the military gets taught worries me greatly, but for some historical context, the Wehrmatch in WW1 and WW2 did not place as much emphasis on psychologically breaking down their soldiers as the US military did. Man for man during both of those wars they were some of the most effective infantry of any side Here's some interesting reading, www.quora.com/Were-US-Marines-tougher-than-elite-German-troops-in-WW2/answer/Joseph-Scott-13 i'll just quote one interesting bit: "However, Marine training was built on the same psychologically backwards, counterproductive “break them down and build them up” approach the Army used, only with greater intensity and brutality. Random beatings, sadistic hazing and petty harassment were a regular feature of training. This tended to stifle some of the very initiative that would later be encouraged, alienate more intelligent recruits, and leave Marines with mixed, conflicted feelings about the service, something of a love-hate relationship. The Marines also tried to buttress this tradition by wasting a lot of training time on an obsession with such militarily useless matters as Napoleonic marching drill, something they are still famous for their skill at. On top of that, the Marines, like the US Amy, had a centralised depot training system, which meant that initial training was conducted by instructors who would not form part of the recruits’ unit, giving the whole thing a more distant, impersonal, factory assembly line feel. The Germans, in contrast, had largely discarded hazing as a training methodology, recognising it to be out-dated and counterproductive. Instead of mindless sadism, the Germans tried to make training tough in realistic, combat-orientated ways that soldiers could appreciate as actually teaching important battlefield lessons. Breaking the individual personality of the recruit was frowned on in favour of trying to find and build on strong points in their character. Off duty time in training was far more relaxed, and relations between all ranks considerably more congenial than what was found in the very stratified, class-conscious US services. Officers led the training most of the time, rather than farming it out to NCOs as was the US practice. The Germans created a degree of camaraderie across all ranks that was the envy of every other fighting force."
