The US Army has a lot of schools that soldiers can attend to get some training. Some Army schools are open to everyone and other require a specific MOS or job in the Army. Here are just some of the schools that Army soldiers might be able to attend to get some training or get a qualification.

My sergeant when I was stationed in Alaska was DA selected to be a recruiter. He got the assignment terminated because the regulations gave exemptions for people with large families. He had five kids, so he got spared that duty.

Tips from an old fart (1SG, paratrooper, NCO Academy Instructor, CLS Instructor, linguist, Battle Staff grad) 1) Always be ready to attend any school offered, in particular the professional development courses such as BLC, ALC, etc. And make it KNOWN to leadership that you're always ready! Soldiers are organized on an OML (Order of Merit List) by their unit. Typically, when a slot becomes available, the most senior soldier on the OML will get that slot. But if that soldier isn't ready (i.e. unable to pass a physical fitness test, pregnant, or refuses to go) the next soldier on the list is offered the slot, etc., etc. Units sometimes get an extra last-minute "use or lose" slot for those courses. It's a huge embarrassment for that unit to not be able to fill that slot because of the reasons above. There have been instances when the most junior, new to the unit soldier, attends a course before far more senior soldiers because they were ready and then get promoted ahead of those more senior peers. 2) Find a mentor! Want to be Airborne? Find someone who is Airborne and simply ask how you can to it, too. You'll be surprised how, particularly NCO's, will go out of their way to help you. 3) In spite of what some soldiers may tell you, volunteer for EVERYTHING! You never know. Once you've proven yourself as wanting to improve yourself and be a better member of the unit and the US Army, your leadership will have your name in the back of their heads anytime an opportunity comes up. A buddy of mine got Air Assault school that way. Brand new to the unit, high speed and motivated. The unit got a use-or-lose slot and he was ready to go. A month later he was back in his unit with Air Assault wings and a reputation as a go-to NCO.

Start with you immediate supervisor, @@giovanisatiro30. Let them know that you're not just looking to do your time and get out of the Army. And don't be shy. If you're looking to do something like Airborne, Ranger, etc and you spot someone in your chain of command or even outside it wearing wings or the tab, ask them how they got jump school or Ranger school. Fill me in. Are you active duty, reserve or guard. What's your MOS? What do you want to do?

this is one hundred percent accurate. I already had the leadership time such as team leader, squad leader, section sergeant and even Platoon Sergeant and had really good NCOers for those leadership positions. But I went to every school that we had slots for and was allowed to attend. Almost everyone wants the schools that give badges or tabs like airborne , air assault, ranger school and so forth. I earned a few of those badges such as airborne, air assault, pathfinder. I served as a drill sergeant and army recruiter. so I have the drill sergeant badge and a gold recruiter badge. But there are a lot schools that do not have badges or tabs that are key to additional duties for the soldier/NCO that not only makes an NCO/soldier shine but also helps the unit as well. These are the schools that will help the soldier with more knowledge and make them a better leader. I had taken courses such as UMOC Unit movement officer course,. Battlestaff. EO leaders course. Master Drivers course, Sling load course, Hazmat Course, Ammo Handlers course, Combat Life Saver, .Bus Driver NBC Course, forklift operator course, Airload Planners course. and so many others that do not offer anything more than knowledge and a certificate but is authorized on a soldiers ERB. Plus a lot of Correspondence Courses that can be taken. Most of the Non badge schools are usually 1 week to 2 weeks long but are a huge benefit. There are also online course that can be taken. They started making soldiers take SSD-1 thru SSD-4 but since have been discontinued as a pre-requirement to NCO academy schools. These schools as well as BLC, ALC, SLC , and even MLC will not only make a soldier/NCO a more knowledgeable soldier, but a key important asset to the unit. Even though I learned a lot in air assault and pathfinder school as well as being a drill sergeant and a 3 year miserable duty as an Army Recruiter, I really enjoy the courses that didn't offer a badge or tab but gained so much knowledge . this gave myself an edge when my records were looked at for the E7 and E8 boards.

@@marksmusicplace3627 I appreciate you asking the questions a soldier might have, but for whatever reason still doesn't ask. Sometimes you don't think to ask at all, or have some bullshit reason not to. And comments like this can help ignite the spark @Staticjumper if I can piggybag off this, I'm currently waiting to go back to MEPS to take my oath and sign. I've got 35W in my sights hoping that leads me to 35M, but wouldn't mind 35P either, and I REALLY just want to do some cool shit while I'm there making a living for the wife and kids. I made a list of army schools to ask my recruiter about next time I'm in the office, and would appreciate any advice I can get my hands on. Though I'm sure atm that advice wholly amounts to "focus on and execute BCT, everything else comes after" lol. While I totally recognize and can commit to that, I really just enjoy planning ahead and knowing what variables I'm working with.

Honestly the hardest tab to maintain is the “DAD” tab. Hardest, challenging, most stressful, never ending school. It’s a very elite group of soldiers who completely understand everything your going through and wish it upon no one else. We see everything without the kids as a break and welcome it. The more times you go through that school, you get even more respect. Working through number 2 now. Best job I ever had. …somehow airborne gets more respect. Try staying up all night with a screaming baby. Some use that as actual torture methods. Jumping out of a plane is a cake walk.

Hot damn that is some motivating shit to read as I'm getting ready to take the plunge back into Army life. First time didn't work out for me, but now I've got a much more level head, and a wife cooking up a little trouble maker. With any luck I'll be out of BCT before our due date and I Couldn't be more excited! But would be lying not to mention also anxious as hell. This is a golden perspective I'll use to push through the suck! Air assault school sounds like fun and all but I'll be day 1 starting the ultimate army school for my DAD tab. Genuinely appreciate you and this comment

ABN school was fun, AASLT was just something you had to do (101st ABN), CLS we all had to attend (11B) and recert, Pre RGR and RGR school was difficult (I remember when it was called RIP and ROPE if you wanted to go to Bat). PLDC was easy: Why? If you are combat arms, you do D&C (Drill and Ceremony) every day and alot of PLDC is D&C. Ill tell you one that was difficult, Pathfinder and LRSD Leader (now called RSLC). All very rewarding schools. Remember, you attend these schools not just for you, but for those you intend to lead. This instils confidence within yourself, and garners the respect of your Soldiers. The intent is to pass on the training. Good stuff man.

For young Soldiers, or those aspiring to become Soldiers, by all means get all the schools you can. Don't focus primarily on badge-producing schools, though. Got it, everyone wants to be Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder, Ranger, etc., but when your sole focus is getting a cool-looking uniform, you sometimes forget the real reason you exist as current or future leader--to take care of those assigned to your unit. I did my time, and my uniform spoke volumes about my assignments. CIB/EIB (not schools, though EIB is a unit-run qualification course), Air Assault (first assignment was the 101st), Recruiter, and Drill Sergeant (DA Select for both of the latter). What wasn't reflected were things like Mobile Retention Team Training, Armorer's Course, CBRN Defense NCO, Unit Prevention Leader, SHARP, Master Resilience Trainer, (MRT) JBC-P Net, CPOF Battle Staff, and other shorter courses that at most granted an Additional Skill Identifier (ASI). All were duties I was assigned as either a primary or collateral job, and all benefited both me and the Army to some extent or another. A few things to consider: some badges/tabs create expectations. Drill Sergeant means you're the standard bearer, a professional NCO essentially on the same level of a CSM without the pay or authority (depending of course on your current rank). Ranger means you're the tactical expert, capable of both training and leading a small unit in every battle drill and other action out there. Also, what I call "style versus substance"... Soldiers at all levels know when you're an ineffective or incompetent leader. One of the worst PSGs I had was one of the most qualified: Special Forces, Ranger, Combat Diver, Airborne. Everyone from the newest PVT to the CSM knew he was nowhere near the PSG his predecessor was (who lacked any badges besides the CIB/EIB). Finally, remember that schools and corresponding assignments translate to civilian experience in many cases. I can't directly correlate Air Assault to many civilian job skills, but I can draw upon Recruiter School and my experience in that assignment as training and experience in marketing, sales, and other things employers are looking for. Big companies are always in need of trainers to help mitigate lawsuits (SHARP), increase productivity (MRT), and recruit or retain good employees.

As a 92R, parachute rigger you automatically get sent to airborne school which you need to pass before AIT. However you only get to go through basic airborne school. You can eventually train to rig the HALO chutes after attending HALO school but that’s much later in a riggers career.
