I carried a SAW my last time in the sandbox in 06-07. Before we headed north to Iraq, we went through a close quarters firing range. After everyone ran the course, a ton of ammo was left. The cadre asked if anyone wanted to have some fun because they preferred not to turn in the excess ammo... I was the only one to raise my hand. I don't know exactly how many rounds I sent down range, but I had at least 4 barrel changes and a good size pile of mags and drums at my feet. My 2 barrels started glowing red, so I had slowed down... a bit. I think I was on the line for about 20 minutes or so.

I quickly put the safety on and reached down to pull them up when Sgt. Moffat suddenly grabbed my arm, pulled me towards his chest and whispered in my ear with a menacing grin; “Now we will see how long you can really hold out cadet”. Sgt. Moffat threw me to the ground with ease and pulled out his fully-loaded pants-pistol, “I hope you like your new battle buddy cadet”. Sgt. Moffat pulled down my service trousers and screamed “Drop and give me 50 cadet!”, he then started softening up my LZ with heavy ordinance pounding. I blacked out for a bit, Sgt. Moffat’s 2 barrels started glowing red, so he had slowed down…a bit. I think I was on the line for about 20 minutes or so while he was jammin’ his Jenny in my bang-bang. “I think your MRE is just about ready cadet” Sgt. Moffat moaned with a sweaty smirk, then proceeding to deliver his payload into my crumb catcher. I’ll never forget my days as a boot, builds character. Sgt. Moffat and I still head down to the range on weekends and relive the good old days, our civvy wives just don’t get it though. Thanks for your service brother.

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

I was switched to the M249 from M16 just prior to going to Iraq in 2003 due my size. And I have to say the 249’s recoil compared to the M16 always felt super soft, as though pillows were pushed into my shoulder. This of course made it incredibly accurate surprisingly. Very strange feeling.
