You have to understand someone who is a pro at one thing and trying to learn to be another. He wanted to participate in the creative process and that was his only way, copying from another story. That was not a characterization choice, that was a script choice. That's what he didn't understand. Actors don't choose to be drunk in a scene, the writer and director does. You can play it as if you're drunk, but you'll probably be fired.

For all the people who laugh at and criticize Arnold for his acting, you have to remember that this man not only identified and recognized, but also recreated the uncanny valley effect before it was even a mainstream concept. His ability to play a machine and be convincing was what made the first Terminator so scary, allowing it to be a cross-genre pic-sci-fi AND horror.
@beastinsight98254 жыл бұрын
This would, in effect, make him as much the conceptualizer of Terminator as Cameron..wish i knew this earlier
@fantinuum10404 жыл бұрын
@@beastinsight9825 You are absolutely right. Because Terminator was not based on any preexisting source material, the film itself IS the source material. James Cameron may have written the character, but Arnold Schwarzenegger added the embellishments and, most likely, changed up some of the action scenes and dialogue to truly bring the character to life. Without Schwarzenegger's input and Cameron's respect for that input, we wouldn't have such an iconic character.

@Mark Richardson Wrong...acquitted does not mean innocent. It simply means the jury had enough doubt that they could not under the law find him guilty. Does not mean he did not do it. All it means is the prosecution could not prove it beyond a reasonable doubt to the jury. Law states that there must be beyond a reasonable doubt to make a guilty verdict.There were to many mistakes made by the prosecution and the fact the one cop they had on the prosecutions side was suspected of being a racist sure did not help their case. So in a TLDR version...acquittal does not mean innocent or that he did not do it. All it means is the prosecution failed to prove to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt (which is required by law for guilty verdict) that he did it.

"I'll be back," is perhaps the most iconic line of the movie. Even (the very few) people who never saw it know that line. Good thing James Cameron was insistent it remained unchanged. Just imagine if, upon Arnold's suggestion, it became something like, "For now I will go. But, believe me, I plan to return." Not quite as impactful.

It's really funny how restricted Arnold was when suggesting changes to Cameron, whereas with Biehn he was so loose and open with different directions. You can really feel the frustration in Arnold's voice as a enthusiastic/perfectionist actor, for me it's completely relatable but Cameron probably wanted the Terminator character to be fully his idea of a perfect antagonist as that was the 'make or break' feature of the film

Arnold's stories get bigger by the year. A relatively new actor was telling James Cameron how he needs to cast and train actors for Cameron's vision and the director sat back and said "Wow Arnold, I see the Terminator has to act like a machine? Brilliant." Joe Weider paid for Arnold to come to America, gave him money and an apartment to live and train at Golds and it turned into "I arrived off the boat in America with a gym bag and a dream". Got VERY lucky buying real estate in Santa Monica with Weiders help in the 70s at a perfect time and was independently wealthy from it BEFORE movies, giving him the luxury to pursue acting became, "I was laying bricks in the day and going to acting classes until midnight, knowing my only shot was to become an actor". Love Arnold, he is inspiring but he gets a little full of his "self made" sucess story and forgets some of the tremendous luck and help he got. May have made a side comment during his audition, but don't think Arnold essentially cast himself with his Terminator vision that Cameron was impressed by.

Excellent interview. Loved hearing these detailed little stories about the terminator but the story about how he ended up playing the terminator doesn't add up because he's said in past interviews that he was the one who wanted to play the terminator and that it was his idea.

Arnold making the nod to the great actor Yul Bryner showed his humility and deep respect. Arnold was the right choice for The Terminator.

Wow. I had seen both Terminator movies so many times but never heard about that. Thank God that Arnie play who he did play and not other way around.
@mackychloe7 жыл бұрын
Arnie may have took the role from OJ but the original Term' script had the Terminator as an 'every man' type character & it was Lance Henrikson that was lined up for the role. Jim Cameron even had pictures done & had Lance in for costuming, but they went with the 'walking tank' type Terminator. all this is on the special edition dvd.

Terminator 2 is a classic, it’s what made Arnold as an actor, that character was absolutely made for him, I cannot imagine anyone else in that role!
@OpticalHaze8 жыл бұрын
I don't get it... in the T2 making he's said that he always wanted to play terminator and nearly had to force Cameron that he got convinced that HE got the Villan part!
@85cube8 жыл бұрын
Arnie wanted the terminator to become a hero instead of a villain for T2, in Cameron's mind it couldn't work and the character couldn't be changed like that, but Arnie knows how to persuade people.
@OpticalHaze8 жыл бұрын
?? but the video says cameron made the proposition to arnie to play terminator and arnold had to made up his mind. Also Cameron said the he will the character as a hero not villan type ?!
@85cube8 жыл бұрын
yes, that was the first movie... cameron originally wanted arnie to play Reese and not the terminator, then changed idea but arnie was skeptical about playing a villain. I was talking about T2 where arnie was the one pushing cameron to re-write the character as a hero, in that occasion arnie had to persuade cameron. maybe he was talking about that but it wasn't very clear.
@christophercavill67307 жыл бұрын
+85cube Arnold didn't want to be in T2 because he thought the terminator being a hero wouldn't work, Cameron had to convince Arnold to be in T2

I remember another interview where Arnold said he was preparing for a fight with Cameron because he was going to demand to play the terminator lol. Something tells me that version in this video is the true story. Maybe Arnold ego has deflated a little bit as he has grown older.

@butcherbane35177 жыл бұрын
It was on the DVD Bonus Features. The story is different. Arnold said "if you want me in the movie, i want to play the Terminator Guy" Apparently Cameron couldn't afford lunch, so to get Arnie to pay, Cameron had to fold and give the role to Shwarzenegger instead of Hendricksen
@varunemani7 жыл бұрын
Thanks to Jim, Glad Lance got the part as the android later. Though it would have been quite extraordinary watching terminator with him playing the machine & Arnie as Resse. Guess they would have finally settled to cast someone else all together instead of Arnie.

Clearly, it's Arnold's favorite role. I don't remember him expressing so much enthusiasm about his other films as about T1 and T2 :)
@burntzapato84465 жыл бұрын
Everything Arnold is talking about is right. Everything I remember about his T1/2 is subtle movements from the terminator. Like the sudden jerk of his face the way he walks completely straight or the long distance scanning stare he does. Just the expressionless face he makes when he's gunning down 30 police officers is chilling. Arnold was born to play the terminator.
@youhustlinmeboi53355 жыл бұрын
Maybe the terminator was made so Arnold could play it.

what arnold didn't tell you is that inbetween jim telling him he should play the terminator and arnold making the final decision, jim sent him full artwork with arnold as the terminator with his face half torn off - this swayed arnold's decision too
