It's a story that sometimes gets a bit garbled. It was Mike Medavoy of Orion who suggested OJ Simpson to Cameron, but Cameron wasn't remotely interested in the idea. And Schwarzenegger did originally approach Cameron and Hurd with the idea of playing Reese, but over a lunchtime meeting, Cameron (who had initially assumed Arnie would be a dim-witted lunk and only took the meeting out of politeness) was really impressed by Schwarzenegger's thoughts about how the CSM-101 should move, in terms of eyes, head and body, and his general enthusiasm for the project. He ended up thinking Schwarzenegger would make a great terminator, even though his initial concept was that the cyborg should be an inconspicuous infiltration unit (an idea he returned to for Robert Patrick's T-1000 in the sequel). When he was shopping the concept around to studios, Cameron initially proposed Lance Henriksen as the terminator, who ended up playing Sgt Vukovich in the movie, and of course played Bishop in Cameron's next movie, "Aliens".

Arnold's right, "I will be back" is probably more like what a machine would say...but he's forgetting it's a machine that is trying to mimic human beings as closely as possible so it can get close to his target without being detected.
@MarcillaSmith8 ай бұрын
I think he's right that it would have been a better - and more memorable - line. The four syllable cadence of "I will be back" would match the "boom boom boom boom" of the Terminator background theme. Also, the way it sounds just a _little_ off from what a real human says would have made it more distinct whenever someone repeats the line. Oh well. Maybe one day the Mandolin Effect will take me to an alternate dimension where he won the compromise.
@silentk592 ай бұрын
@@MarcillaSmith But your not getting it. The whole movie, John is teaching the terminator to be more human. He teaches him about human lingo, morals and connotations. It makes WAY more sense for the terminators words to be "i'll be back" because that means that hes learning more about humanity.

I do admit, I always found it a bit of a plot hole in T2, how Arnold doesn't kill anyone even BEFORE he swears not to. But obviously they had to do it that way to hide the plot twist, so eh.
@archerj.maggott13729 ай бұрын
A valid point, but I also think that even a near-indestructible terminator would probably know that it had to at least sometimes measure its use of deadly force while it was on its way to its actual objective. It's not completely indestructible, after all, and if alarmed authorities were to focus enough deadly force upon it, then it would likely be destroyed eventually. For instance, in T2, in order to acquire needed clothing and transportation, it had the choice of either turning the biker bar into a multiple murder scene with multiple witnesses, or merely turning it into the scene of a brawl with multiple witnesses, and it apparently chose the latter. The presumable news headline of, "fight erupts at biker bar, 1 stabbed, 1 burned on grill," probably wouldn't have drawn much outside attention. In T1, on the other hand, it killed the punks hanging out in the park late at night in order to accomplish the same thing, but there, it was also much more capable of 'cleansing' the scene of all witnesses. I guess the headline would have been, "3 punks found dead in park after apparent late-night drinking session," which would have of course been all the more shocking, but there also would have been no witnesses. Similar logic could have occurred to it in T2, when it nearly killed those two jocks in the alley late at night, before John stopped it from actually doing so. Interestingly to me, when it assaulted the police station in T1, it may have made that very aggressive decision because it was actually starting to get 'desperate', since its tissue covering was apparently starting to succumb to necrosis -- as evidenced by the 'dead cat' remark from the slumlord -- and it was probably only a matter of time before its camouflage, which it needed, was no good anymore. After all, a walking corpse with pieces of a metal skeleton probably starting to show underneath its flesh would not be able to remain inconspicuous for long, so it probably needed to act then -- both decisively and overwhelmingly -- for the highest possible likelihood of accomplishing its mission, which had already become more complicated, as more outside attention had just become focused upon it. Therefore, switching from 'infiltrator mode' to 'combat chassis mode', and making the police station into the scene of a mass murder of police officers -- which would likely be talked about for many years to come -- might have seemed worthwhile to the terminator in that moment, whereas if certain factors weren't at play, it might have otherwise decided to simply wait things out for a bit, and resume its pursuit of its target later. For these same reasons, to me, the biggest illogicality of T2 might have been the terminator very openly confronting the police officers at the Cyberdyne building, since they all would have known him as "that guy who killed all those cops in 1984, and then got away," and there he would have been again, facing an entire department of police officers like a one-man army, and then getting away. He didn't even have any reason to think he would actually be able to stop the T-1000 from killing John at that point, and his brazen confrontation with the police would have only driven his probability of being able to do that even lower. However, if the director had been thinking about it that way, then how would he have ever come up with an excuse to film that incredible firefight sequence with the Minigun and the grenade launcher? Nothing quite like that had ever been filmed before. Sorry to hit you with an essay, but the Terminator movies kind of fascinate me, especially the first two, and the third one isn't awful, at least not for me.
