When you have 2 potentially reactive groups, ask yourself which one is more reactive, that's typically the one you'll see added

thank you so much for the video! One quick question - isn't H2SO4 a strong acid? Why does it want to grab H and make H3SO4?
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 6 күн бұрын
Yes, it's definitely a strong acid. If H2SO4 is the only thing present, with nothing else to do, it will grab a hydrogen from another molecule of itself. So in a way, it does dissociate a hydrogen at the same time that it grabs one. We call this an auto-dissociation reaction.

I just didn't understand where the positive charge came from? Wouldnt O form a dative covalent bond with the H+ coming from the other acid molecule using one of its 2 lone pairs and so would still have 8 electrons?
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 9 ай бұрын
Following the octet rule isn't reason enough for an atom to be neutral in charge. I'm unfamiliar with the term "dative", but if you're speaking of the positively charged oxygen on the protonated sulfuric acid, then it has a positive formal charge because 6 valence electrons for oxygen minus the 5 electrons that it has directly attached to it leaves us with a +1 formal charge. For more on calculating formal charge, make sure to see my tutorial at Leah4sci.com/Formal

@@Leah4sci ah ok omg tysm! Btw in A levels we said that a dative covalent bond = coordinate covalent bond. In our syllabus it was actually used much more over the latter. Oh and BTW thank you so so so much for your tutorial videos I remember struggling to understand when I was still studying for my A levels and finding your videos. They were always so extremely helpful and every time helped me to immediately understand whatever it was that my lecture notes or even private lesson notes did not explain in enough detail. THANK YOU!

Quick question, but when doing the mechanism to find the superelectrophile why did you use 2 sulfric acids. I thought we only had one avaliable.

I don't understand the part where oxygen has 3 lone pairs and has a negative charge whereas it's positive 1 lone pair. why?
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 3 ай бұрын
To calculate the formal charge of an oxygen, we take the number of valence electrons of a neutral atom (which is 6) and subtract the lone pair electrons as well as half of the bonding electrons. In the case of the oxygen with 3 lone pairs, that leaves us with 6 valence electrons minus 6 lone electrons minus 1 in the bond. That's 6-7 = -1 In the case of the oxygen with 1 lone pair, we have 6 valence electrons minus 2 lone electrons minus 3 in the bonds. That's 6-5 = +1. To review this concept, make sure to see my Formal Charge tutorial at Leah4sci.com/Formal

in the beginning, why did you react two H2SO4 molecules together when only one is given?

N G because theres more than 1 in solution. Same as if there was h3o, the solution contains many of everything in it.

Molecules never show up in singles. Anytime you see numbers it's there to tell you a ratio. This means that 1 reactant and 1 reagent means you have millions at a ratio of about 1:1

In the last step of the mechanism why didn't the so3- (on the benzene) abstract the h+ from the hydronium ion
@muiz5638
@muiz5638 5 жыл бұрын
I think it might be because the hydrogen in OH is more positive than the one in H3O+ due to the negative charge drawing electrons from three sources as opposed to one making those hydrogens less delta positive than the one on OH, and the SO3- attacks the more positive charge (OH hydrogen).
