So wonderful to see glimpses of Champ (the dog we all shared...and loved). I've been watching for years, since the first van and have watched as you have learned an amazing amount of technology and crafts. I have NO doubt that you will get your ship repaired and head out to blue water...can hardly wait! (But I am 75 so you might not want to take a whole lot of years...I only have so many left! :-) )

So nice to see some old footage! All these 5 years prepared you for this renovation. You've got the skills now and, hopefully, you've learned from your mistakes! I know I did from yours and mine. Ahoy, Simon!

This is an exciting new chapter. The Gabriola years were a valuable era of learning all kinds of boat-building and maintenance skills, and small island community living. You've shot way past anything I've ever learned about boat maintenance. I'm excited to follow whatever comes next, because yes, it will not all go to plan!

Definitely building community! It has been said,"you are today the sum total of all you yesterday's"! (I really like that one) The wanderer was always lurking in the background... Yet you portray on your videos that you were "content" which sated the other needs! The 5 years... Was not a waste in my opinion! Look at what you have learned! And we had the Good Fortune to come along on your journey! At the end of some cold long hard days... There was food! That alone made it worth to watch the videos! Oh yeah! Goodonyas! Go get'm tiger!

Wow! I had no idea the Wharram was a “no go”. I kinda need a moment to process that. Your hopes and dreams at the beginning of that boat make-over, became OUR hopes and dreams. Thank you for this much needed update. Now that I know your status so clearly, I’m sticking with you Simon. Make it happen!!!

Freaking awesome! Mistakes? Eh. It's life. Even those who chose the view from a sofa don't avoid those. Yours looks a life full of dreams, promise, creativity, enriching adventures, learning experience... good friends. What the hell else is it all about? It ain't ever e x a c t l y how we planned but...... as Paulo Coelho's book Alchemist alludes to- when we are on "our"own unique path, living from the heart, synchronicities, events conspire to make our dreams reality. Seems you are well prepared for this. I think it's key to view, then do what you can to make preparing yourself and your boat for bluewater cruising every bit a part of the adventure and dream- do what you can to pause and enjoy that process as all part of. You're already on your way.... this is the journey my friend!

So, I'm not sure how long I've been enjoying your videos. I will say that you turned me on to magic carpet at what I believe was the beginning of their channel. I was bummed when you stepped away from KZbin. But shit man! Your a sneaky one. The new content about what has been transpiring with you has been amazing. It has been an amazing storytelling event! I am so excited to see your next experiences. Thanks for letting this old guy live vicariously throw you. Cheers, brother.

I am thankful that you were able to acknowledge the Wharram as a lost cause. It might make a good houseboat for someone, but was never going to be a world cruising boat. Now you have a good monohull, a proven design, that IS a world cruiser. Or can be, after you rebuild her. One thing, if the diesel is in good shape, DON'T get rid of it! For God's sake DON'T do that! A good diesel is invaluable on a big boat like this one. Electric drive is fine for getting in and out of a marina but will never be sufficient for a heavy displacement boat when one sometimes travels for a day or two (or even three) when there is no wind. It is much more cloudy in the tropics than most people realize and even 3000 watts of solar is not enough to power a simple grid when the sun is hidden. Carry on!

I am a subscriber, but not a dedicated one, but do like the ethos. I should watch more, and the new trailer is a great reminder of the big picture, and actually how close you are to bluewater sailing and adventures compared to the start. You got this :)

Diesel electric interests me . An electric motor and large battery set augmented by the generator for long passages . If the genset is up to it , I would pull the motor , add batteries and electric propulsion and lots of solar and regen . I do not think electric alone is good enough for blue water long distance cruising , but if you can extend the range with a genset your range could actually be higher and fuel consumption lower because you augment with solar , wind and regen. Needs a fairly large generator to do it . If just short hops you are all electric but if you need to pound into it for a few days into it under power you can .

She will be beautiful when you get done fixing her up a bit, but I am sure sad to see that Old Dog isn't going to be the boat that takes you around the world. She was designed to be flexible, but not all Cats are, so its strange that she can't be made to be stiff and still work out for blue water sailing.. I am guessing it would just cost too much to set Old Dog up to be a stiff Cat from a Flexible Cat. Its going to take a lot of effort to get this one up ready to go, but it will be worth it if you like Mono-hulls.. Keep up the good work :)

Hi, Simon Craig here...I'm finishing up (haha so I say) my rebuild of a Hurricane damaged Tatyana, named Bed Adam (Son Of Man). i'm a middle age man, and the work has been hard; but I would have done nothing so important in my life as to give myself my dream a round the world capable sail boat. The above is to say that it is possible, even necessary if you are a water baby. let me and and community know if you need anything at all. you / we will get her up and sailing. every turn of a screw is one turn closer to freedom. Warm regards, Craig

If you're committed to the electric drive system make sure you get the right batteries, and they will be the expensive batteries. Do not try to convert a battery from an electric car as those tend to explode when exposed to salt water.

Why didn't you just work for 5 years a buy a boat that is sail away ready ? Or just get a job an get a loan for an $80k boat? The boat is $1 for a reason. Old boats are great for rich people. Nobody else
@findingsimon11 күн бұрын
I’ve done the math. I should come out 50k ahead this way. I also don’t have a high paying job to jump into right now. I know what you’re saying though, for most that is the simplest solution. When I’m done I guess I’ll tally the numbers and see if it was worth it. These boats sell for 100k-200k depending on how they’re outfitted.
