I've spent another weekend cleaning up Ebony's engine and installing ARP head studs so it can handle more psi. The job was a little tricky but overall very doable with only removing the valve cover!
If you are new here, keep up with the progress of this build by subscribing and check my "Ebony" playlist to see plans and goals for the car.

Good job man. I was thinking if this was possible for the m54B30. Im running 8psi on a vortech supercharger at the moment. Im trying to do 10psi with a intercooler but i definitely know for sure i will need head studs as well. That's how i bumped into your video trying to see if anyone has done it. Thank you for the information on details for diy guys like us. Much appreciated

Im currently going to do this process do you torque each bolt you swap with all 3 sequins or first one and then move to the next one and then go back for the 2nd and 3rd after they are all installed?
@itsBlack
@itsBlack 3 ай бұрын
Yes I went to the first step with each bolt and after they were all swapped I went to step 2 then 3. Finished with 85lbs. The paper says 75 but all the boost community does 85

Did you ever end up retorquing the studs? Or did you just send it?
@itsBlack

I think (from my knowledge) you only need to retorque on a copper head gasket. I checked them one time when I changed a valve cover but they were all still torqued

congrats you just ruined ur shortblock. anytime u swap out engine structure hardware and not have it torque plate machined, you are 1.) created a seal less effective than that of oem. and before you say "well its still fine" bs, just remember i can load a revolver with one bullet spin the barrel, pull the trigger, and live, but doesn't mean its still not a terrible idea because i got lucky. and 2.) any machinist or engineer will tell you bolt structure change like tensile strength, heat range, and torque to tensile ratios, etc . its a great way to get hairline cracks in ur heads. i couldnt tell you how many heads ive repaired from people installing arp headstuds and getting cracks in there heads " idk i used the arp torque specs" not understanding the specs arp gives you is for a surface machined for that hardwares clamping force. you can get lucky, but dont call luck anything other than what it is.

Stfu idiot. Mechanics are adopting this method and have been doing this for years already. You sound like a noob mechsnic or worse an old out of date no touch with reality idiot who thinks theres only one way to do anything. Id agree you probably have seen quite a few short blocks damaged because theres too much idiots out there who dont bother following instructions that matter - namely the 3 stages of torquing thats required, forgetting to apply the lube or whatever idiots do or forget. So its not this process its idiots with no common sense. Kinda like you

Considering a low mileage head is 300 dollars and a head gasket job on these motors is easy, I'd do the same thing and just shortcut it. Worst case I pull the head after a couple thousand miles.
@feelgoodhorizon4084
@feelgoodhorizon4084 2 жыл бұрын
@@Vince-DM when you do that you remove the failsafe. engineers design most gaskets based on the heat and power the engine makes, when you get leaning the headgasket acts like a parachute and saves the pistons, rings, etc. arp and hg cars in street racing is huge cuz it cheap and you can get away with a little more, but if it evers leans from an injector failure, etc, the head gasket holds and the damage just hops to the next weakest link which is stock rings and pistons on most engines not built. but most people nowadays rather take a yters advice over someone with decades of exp.
@Vince-DM
@Vince-DM 2 жыл бұрын
@@feelgoodhorizon4084 You could also stick injector failure to bad programming, because it should have a limp mode for AFRs outside of tolerance for fuel output etc. I have never seen a head gasket go out because of the motor running too lean. Only from overheating or excessive boost (deck lift) You would have to be a complete sucker to pay a machinist 5-8k to work on an M50 just to only run 300-400 hp. I will roll the dice every time with my 500 dollar pick-n-pulls, it's not worth waiting 3 months to have a completely mint motor as I am not a millionaire. Stock block is perfectly fine for 8 psi on a moderately sized T3/T4 as long as the head studs are replaced. I have seen people do it wrong and many people do it halfway inbetween like the guy in this video (as I will do the same) - the people that "do it right" almost never drive their cars in my experience, because they treat it like a baby instead of a car.
@feelgoodhorizon4084
@feelgoodhorizon4084 2 жыл бұрын
what do you think makes an engine overheat? do you think metal contact will last forever if "your tunes right bro" thats not how any of this works. when you add stress to something not build for it you create heat, fatigue, pressure where you dont want it. 26psi stock new oem sr20 studs hg stock ex manifold. dsm 4g62 28psi stock hg and studs, both were abused to hell and back. HG and studs at 8psi? you're just wasting money for "piece of mind" that you dont even need and something that can cause issues later down the line. the people that "do it right" are the ones competing and have businesses, not autox drifting there car once a month.
