$1370 cx racing kit $ 950 Miller tuning $ 450 fx stage 4 clutch $ 200 AEM wideband $ 300 misc $3500 Can run safely 8 psi on a gt3582r Which should put an m50b25 around 350whp. Cutring HG+cop spacer and studs will be another $600. Do the work yourself and you can easily have 500whp for under $4200.. run it conservatively and you shouldn't be braking anything. Bushings, subframe, and mounts. (Engine and tranny) good video, I hope whoever watches gets a good idea on what they need to gather. ^^^^ btw this all just a starter kit. The CX kit is great. No cutting or welding, all bolt on and easy to put together.

Very informative and very correct, glad someone finally tells it like it is, for some reason a lot of people expect making 600hp is as easy in real life as it was for them in need for speed haha, but one thing that will hopefully help encourage people to push through the scary high cost and everything, is you valued most stuff at complete maximum prices, I can't tell you how many times I've found a complete swap (multiple different cars from bmw to Nissan to Chevy) and when picking it up asking about another block or pile of parts in a corner and the seller throw in for free or little extra on top, that being said you can sell what isn't needed, make some money back, when I was swapping my 1j into my E36 I went to buy the 1j off Craigslist, showed up at the sellers house without seeing anything besides 2 pics of the engine and him listing it litterally as "1jzgte for your next party car" had no details, nothing, when I got there I lucked out, he had gotten it off a wrecked 1j swapped e36 sedan, gave me a swap harness, trans bell housing adapter, headers, flashed ecu preTuned for the swap, even a spare turbo for 300$ more, after I got home I cancelled probably 3 to 4 grand of conversion orders and also went and canceled probably 2 grand in parts orders, and had the swap in and running reliably less then a month later, I spent maybe 4000$ total for the build up to that point, that's for the car, the 1j, all the swap parts. Sold the m50, sold my black m3 interior, and was back down to around 1200$ spent on the car haha, later down the line went to buy coilovers, ended up leaving with some turbo Mac wheels and 2 brembo drilled and slotted rotors, only paid 200 for the coilovers (they were no name eBay junk but great to slide with) and got all the extra shit for 600$ I've gotten halfway through building a Honda, simple h22 swap, same route I always go, an while going to buy parts of someone ended up trading for a caged and fully built rolling chassis 240 coupe, needed complete drivetrain and paint, but had cage, all suspension arms and components replaced, many upgraded, and even had upgraded fuel and brake lines, all I had into the Civic h22 build was bride seat, bolt in cage, harness, 200$ junkyard h22, had eBay headers and eBay solid mounts, wasn't wired or anything yet. People need to stop fearing the cost.

It’s not as straightforward as M50 in an E30 or M54 in an E36. To get it running on the OEM ECU, you need to take a lot of electronics under the dash and fit all that in the receiving car, way more than usual swaps.

And why do you need to machine the head if you want to use a "performance headgasket". You resurface the head when it's warped because you have a blown headgasket. If you don't have a blown headgasket then don't resurface the head
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
The cometic mls headgasket I installed requires the cylinder head to be resurfaced to a specified roughness average to ensure an optimal seal. If you're replacing the hg with a stock hg, you can get away with just cleaning the surfaces of the old gasket and slapping a fresh gasket on. Personally, I would just get the head resurfaced since I would plan on getting other head work done (valve seal replacement, pressure test, etc)
@timm59706 жыл бұрын
@@PawinningI've never heard of heads being milled to "different roughnesses" so I'm totally not buying that. Sounds like a ploy to get you to mill the head so they have less returns by those that thought their head was straight when it wasnt
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
@@timm5970 I wouldn't be surprised if it was a ploy, cometic MLS headgaskets can have an unreliable seal long term from from researching a few boosted build threads on bimmerforums, etc. I'm not an expert to argue why RA matters on mating surfaces, but since it was my first build I didn't want to cut corners in areas where I was inexperienced (which is why feedback here is great to learn new/alternative methods). Regardless, I plan to switch over to a cut-ring gasket with future builds to avoid the more strict surface prep requirements for an MLS headgasket.

I'm on that 18 year old part time broke boy budget. I read if you do head gasket and head studs you can push up 20 psi and make 350+ whp. Anyone know how much you can make on stock motor 5-8 psi? And if you should?
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
I’m make 350whp with 14 psi. 8 psi will give you 275-300, but rule of thumb is you wanna build for more power than you want. A gasket and arp studs are a must imo. It’ll give you fewer headaches down the line. I understand the budget you have, I was in a similar position in high school when I first picked up my e36. I encourage patience with saving up money and really looking for the best deal out there for secondhand parts. With all that, it gives you time to sort out little maintenance items here and there to really prepare the car for an aspiration conversion.

I agree on waiting for good second hand deals - if you don’t have a specific timeline, you can wait and search for the best deals, instead of paying through the nose on parts you need urgently. And unopened engine (M50) should hold 8-10psi, depending on its general shape. Just put the kit together, get it working (so you’ll have some fun out of your hard work and money) and don’t overdo it with boost. Once you can afford it, take apart the engine and put in the parts needed for your power goals +~25% - that way you can just turn it up if you feel you need more at some point 😃

@@Pawinning lol now 6 months later re watching this, I have about a 4k budget and will probably end up doing a similar build. I have a 323is, should I swap to an m50 or is an m52 gonna hold power the same and as reliably? ( looking to make around 320)
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
zaviier _ hmmm I would stick with an m50 if you have an obd1 ecu, m52 if your obd2. An m50 would be easier to work with imo and cheaper to source. M52s can provide more torque, but are a little bit more expensive and people perform m50 manifold swaps on them with boosted builds anyways
@codenamecordon6 жыл бұрын
Pawinning then again, M50s are older and are sometimes showing their age by now. The M52B28 has 0.3L more displacement and an aluminium block, which makes it lighter. Lighter front is good, since you’ll be adding weight to the front and therefore changing the balance of the car. Not to mention the six-cylinder E36s are slightly nose-heavy from the factory

Pawinning I did some research. It seems the US engine is totally different to the EU engine we have here. Just for information: Different Vanos, different Intake, different RPM, less HP in the US.. Very interesting. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M50
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
foshizzlfizzl thanks for researching, yes your right. The euro spec m3 engines are like gold. It sucks the US didn’t get higher hp E36s 😢. I was mainly surprised by the price difference, but considering the component differences that makes sense!
@foshizzlfizzl6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think they worth it. But therefore everyone in EU who wants to build a m50b28 out of a m50b25, is looking for your US M3 Crankshaft :) so you got something that we want too :) equal pain in this BMW Owner World :P

M50/s50 is a simar to 2jz ? Is it any diffrence?
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
similar, but the 2jz has more aftermarket support for more power. that's why its a popular platform over the m50/s50 engines, because with the bmw engines anything more that 400-500 needs forged internals for a reliable setup.

I know this video is kinda old and might not be active, but I have a dilemma. I COULD get this e36 sedan (I kinda want a sedan over a coupe just because it's unique and more sleeper) but want to aim for the 300-350 horsepower range. I don't really want or need anything much more than that. A friend of mine has a fully machined s52 block and brand new pistons, but the pistons are low compression for high boost. Could I get away with just building a N/A s52 with, let's say, tune and bolt-ons that would make something around 350hp? I know that, with the s52, the ecu is harder to tune, and as much as a turbo e36 would be insane, I'm just not sure if it's worth it to me. I need some opinions; could I build a 350hp N/A s52 for cheaper?
@MCatwar6 жыл бұрын
I dont have high hopes for a 350hp s52, it might be easier to pull a m50 from a junkyard and turbo it honestly
@Pawinning6 жыл бұрын
Yeah you’re better off boosting if you wanna reach 350hp. Maxing our bolt on mods can be just as expensive imo. The euro m3 doesn’t even get more than 330hp, so I’d say boosting is your best option. Couple hundred bucks into the motor with a better gasket and studs, then put in 12-14psi to reach that goal

If I had all the parts, all the tools, and put all the effort into one period of time grinding every day, I’d say it took me about a month or two. However with my part time jobs, school, and other commitments this turbo build took 2 years
