that work is incredible, I've been trying to do some Matte Painting for a couple of years, I thought that this year I would use it to practice, but my PC died so I could only do 2 or 3 practices throughout the year

Im an aspiring 23 yr old themed entertainment designer who works in the industry in concept and technical development and you and your team have brought me so much inspiration and skill sets that extend beyond my industries standards. It started off as an interest where I self taught myself photoshop and sketchup and it has now grown beyond a hobby of mine and into a career path. Your videos and projects give so much to strive for in pushing beyond my boundaries and comfort zone in developing my skill set. Thank you and continue to create amazing art, architecture and environments.

ARQUI9 Visualisation many thanks for your response! Is there anyway I can have more contact with you (such as an email) as I would love to further my relationship with you and your team. If not, again many thanks and I look forward to your next projects and videos and will be following very closely.

I was like but this is are pretty standard tips , nothing particularly good , but when you threw that tip about the screen mode instead of levels I was omg genius this is gold , and the thing about the final size is another gold nugget , thank you for the tips!

Very nice tips as always. Back when I started to create my first archviz, they were absolutely aweful and I used to be satisfied of it though. Now I'm creating much better viz but I'm never getting satisfied of it. We always tend to be kind of impatient to achieve such result, but as you perfectly said it, it's all about practice, practice and practice... Thanks Pedro !

I use the copied layer set to Screen, but I have not been increasing its contrast, so that was helpful. Another trick I use is to Ctrl click the mask or layer to load its outline as a selection, and stroke that with white. Mask out everything but the edges facing the light, and feather in according to what works. This also works with back lit objects were you want to rim light them, except you'd maybe warm the stroke colour a wee bit. BTW I found this video looking for matte painting tips, and I have a feeling I shall be watching some more of them. [EDIT] I thought I'd expand on the rim lighting technique I mentioned. A straight stroke works OK as a hard highlight, but when feathering in a back lit subject I use a thicker stroke , and stroke the centre of the selection. I then blur the stroke to feather it away from the outside edge, and clip the stroke layer to the object layer. Making the stroke layer a Smart Object before applying the stroke gives you some flexability. If the blur thins the stroke too much, duplicate the layer. You can use a variation of this to relight just an edge with a copy of the object layer set to screen. Give the screen layer a hide all mask, and Ctrl click the object layer to load the selection, and stroke with white whit the layer mask selected. There's an added bonus to this one as you can feather the mask nondestructively. I think people sometimes forget thay you can treat a layer mask pretty much the same as the image, so you can Ctrl click the mask to load it as a selection, and Modify > Contract or Expand. Or you can turn on Quick Mask after Ctrl clicking so you can see the mask in red, and then apply Gaussian blur, thus seeing how far the blur extends. I am giving that as an example, but I would always use Mask Properties to feather a mask for obvious reasons.

Don't we love the Hudson River School references? I remember Dylan Cole also taking lot of inspiration from them. Personally I'm not huge fan of the deer in the paintings but still, I like what you have done in terms of lighting and composition. Well done!

A10 min tutorial is about right for something like this. Hit and run information no rambling on. And I loved that you weren't just doing another 'push this button then push that button' style tutorial. Talking about the theory and methodology and the strategy is something that is left out far too often because it isn't deemed sexy enough. I would love to hear and see more on relighting. It's such a hard topic to get your head around and there are loads of people out there doing tutorials on it but are those people any good themselves? Not so sure. Different examples day and night, hard sunlight overcast daylight. SNOW! where there was no snow etc.

I have seen your vids and i love them!! but i got a huge question for you: you have a project and a viz -section cut, exterior or interior with a window- of it and of course a location, in your vids i always see you use your pack of pics from different locations *but*, what if the client wanna see the actual location of this project in the viz? it would be interesting to see your workflow on this situation and more if that location already has something on it, like in a urban enviroment

I completely get why this for one saves up tons of times for studios and the second can be a fun way of painting but I personally totally dislike it. I'm in love with thumbnailing by looking at reference and coloring with my stylus and the brush tool, I just need that painting feeling and can't stand this style. Hope my opinion is respected as much as the opposite is from me x)
