Good lord some of the people in the comments... Matte painting isn't intended to be a piece of art to be sold or shown at a museum, it's a means to an end. Only part of a much bigger production. It's done to visualise a concept not to show how skillfull or how great of an artist you are for christ's sake! And if you have a problem with it being called matte "painting" then take it up with the person who came up with the term not the people who use it. It's not the artists' fault that that's the industry term for this kind of image creation. Now that i got that off my chest, despite what people think, this stuff still takes a lot of skill and this was executed beautifully. Amazing work!

This is Graphic Design. Rarely is Graphic Design used to create 100% original works from scratch and almost always utilizes photobashing. This is a perfect look for a conceptual landscape for a film and I love the giant skeleton.

Bruh. As far as I know, this is commonly used technique in movie industry or somewhere like that. and the reason why this technique is used isn't because they just can't paint realistically, but because they have to make concept art quick and accurate.

@@lampboy926 You're right it is! Look at an assassin's creed concept or marvel movie art book and the technique is rampant throughout and those are just the favorites picked for the books. There are hundreds of others that will never see the light of day, many with much less polish. Like you said, they need to get many variations of ideas out as quickly as possible. It's not about if they can paint it or not, they can, it's about spending time focusing on creating a vision, a mood, the ground work for when the actual assets will be created for the final product.

This is absolutely amazing. I can barely describe how beyond inspirational this is without going on a long tangent. I really like working with pictures and drawing similarly to them. But people nowadays bash on others so harshly, when they simply can’t understand how much effort it’s takes for these type of things. Especially since I struggle a lot with drawing and watching this just sort of shows you the different ways you can express your art. I hope one day I can grow to have this sort of talent. lmao, glad you liked it! At the beginning I was using the mixer brush in Photoshop so it feels a lot more like painting. I've never used it much before but a few months ago I started to use it more in my workflow and it's an amazing tool a lot more artists should try :)

NRubric practice is a bullshit response ( way too generic/ broad feedback ) just try and work at your own pace see what your flaws are and work on them try experimenting with brushes you’ve never used before. The Art of Dewa It’s hard to wrap your head around it a little, but he looks for pictures that match the lighting of his painting. Not all the pictures match, but the lighting and colors are somewhat consistent. If the colors don’t match exactly, he’s always able to fiddle with the settings. Photobashing is really just another tool to get things done, plus it’s a common technique for people to get designs out the door. It’s a skill that needs to be developed and fleshed out.

I find it funny how people believe that photo bashing is not a legitimate art style. I feel that this requires more technical knowledge of art and skills than most people realize. I love the attention to detail, especially the color pick for the water. The water and canyon looks like it is lightly stained with copper oxide which is absolutely beautiful.

It's impressive, just not as impressive as painting everything yourself. I don't think that's unfair. It does take a lot of skill and it's much more efficient. It's undeniable that you can make beautiful pictures with it, there's nothing wrong with it. It's just that authenticity is something a lot more appealing than efficiency, when you look at it as a piece of artwork. That's how I feel about it anyway

People who are hating it because he used photos doesn't understand that if you're an environment artist, they won't pay you for every single leaf you paint. They'll pay you for your speed. And you need to make multiple paintings in a day to please them. It doesn't mean environment artist doesn't know how to paint, it just means they don't have time to paint every single leaf.

I'd love to learn how to do this; but I'd never be able to do something this beautiful, amazing and natural. It really looks like it could be real in another time or world kind of way. This is a really beautifully crafted photo montage. It's very hard to tell where most of the montage seems are and would be even less likely for people who never saw the creation process. As a matte painting it really sets a scene and conveys an unfolding story. I want to know more about the adventures of the errant knights. Who are they? Where did they come from? Why were they sent to this "giant canyon"? What unfolds next? Very compelling. I want to go there!!! Thanks for sharing how this beautiful work of art was created. Fun, entertaining, informative and to the point. And all without uttering a single word.

Is it the video compression or does the area behind the second waterfall seem a bit too crisp? The bushes and trees in front of it seem a bit blurred out compared to the rocky area behind. Maybe I am wrong but I would have pushed it a touch to the back with some blue tint or some slightly haze on it. Don´t get me wrong it´s a great piece! Especially considering the time. And sorry if I am nit-picky but something bothered me the second I saw the final piece and I can´t unsee it XD

Looking pretty good and shows the process beautifully. Would still criticise about the rock structure being inconsistent in some places. But it’s forgiven for demonstration purposes. Of course you guys realise that in a production scenario clients tend to never approve the first version so you’d probably have to go through a few versions before final. People who hate on matte painting and photobashing are very ignorant. Critics have always been critical against new tools and techniques, this is nothing new, but rarely have the critics been artists and talented creatives, because know that the same rule apply in all forms of visual arts, it all takes the same princioles, skills and the eye of an artist to make it work. Do you really think great matte painters/photobashers started with these tools? Most of them are great with other art techniques and use these techniques and tools to supplement their art and to have fun with new ways of making art and being creative.
