Back when I was 14, I just cut some yards one morning to make some money. Around noon, I walk to Churches Chicken to get something to eat. On my way home, I get tackled from behind, all my food and drink all over the sidewalk. I get flipped over, and it was a Cop on top of me. He tells me he needs to talk to me. He tells me to get up, but I was so hurt that I could barely walk. He stands me up and asks me where I’m coming from. Before I can answer, another Cop pulls up and says that’s not him. It's not just black parents. I'm a white man, but even I've been profiled. It's a top to bottom problem in the police force, most police forces. A list of police interactions I've had in my life: When I was 14, they cuffed my mother in the back of a squad car for 15 minutes because they misread the birthdate on her drivers license and someone with a similar name had warrants. They didn't apologize to her despite it being a rather obvious mistake that the 60 year old woman wasn't in fact in her 30s. When I was 19, I went fishing at night on a local pier with several of my childhood friends who were younger than me (around 16). A cop openly accused me of selling drugs and questioned why we were "hanging out" together if I wasn't there to deal to them. The pier was 30 feet from an active coast guard station, obviously the best place to sell drugs The campus police called me to take a report because my car was vandalized. They informed me that despite cameras looking at the incident there was nothing they could do to investigate. When I questioned this, they ticketed me for parking on the stripe in retaliation which blocked me from registering for classes. A cop pulled me over and accused me of reckless driving and running a red light in a school zone. His own ticket write up showed that based on location, not only was I not in a school zone, but I was making a right turn on red, not running the light. A judge threw out the ticket. If I'm having this much trouble, I can only imagine what minorities are going through with this level of mistrust and harassment

The police saw this car and it looked suspicious to them, two older white ladies in the front seats and a young Black man in the back and they had to check it out. So they concocted a story to do so. As the TV reporter said, they all have dashcams so where is this mysterious Black couple that reported the robbery? Once they inspected the situation violating everyone's rights, they apologized to the grandmother---did they apologize to the young man they humiliated? Nope. He's not a real person to them. He’ll always remember this day 😢 In 2010, we were stopped in Arizona… my oldest daughter is half Hispanic and our two youngest kids are not. We were pulled over, sat on the curb… while they interrogated my daughter. Asked us for HER birth certificate; no one else… my husband home from deployment showed his orders (was asked to verify) and we told them our daughter was born on Lackland AFB and we don’t carry birth certificates of our children (duh!)…. I was irate. Not nice at all but we were detained for almost 2-hrs. She is 30 now, and it still upsets her. Once you have your rights taken away, for zero reason; you don’t forget. The reason why they obtained his Identity is for future use, as a precaution in case if the grandmother decides to press charges against the officers, to know where this boy lives, and who his father is, and the rest of his family is, it’ll be almost similar to try to harass them to get them to act out in a negative way towards the police so that they could be sent to jail.

I wish there would be laws requiring police to get written statements, or some sort of recorded statement from people who call in "crimes" so that someone could be held accountable for police misconduct. If they cannot provide a written or recorded statement, then it must be assumed that they acted on their own behalf, should lose their qualified immunity, and be fired and charged for deprivation of rights under the color of law. I wish he had refused to identify himself and his father, and either made them arrest him for "obstructing" or "failure to ID" or let him go.

Oftentimes, when cops realize they've made a mistake, they go out of their way to find something incriminating to justify it. Some cop falsely arrested a guy for trespassing at a Walmart. Turned out to be the wrong guy, but as the cop drove him back to his car, he stopped midway, took the guy out to take pictures of his tattoos, just in case. Another time, a cop entered the wrong apartment, thinking it was hers. She shot the guy who was sitting on his couch, eating ice cream. Once other cops arrived, they searched the house looking for drugs. Another time, cops conducted a no knock warrant, but it turned out they were on the wrong floor. Even after they realized their mistake, they continued to search every room while the terrified family remained seated, at gunpoint. Plenty more where that came from.

This event had to be terrifying, humiliating and embarrassing for the young man. I am sure his grandmother was petrified! Even after the mix up was "supposably" cleared up; they kept him in handcuffs and continued to hope to find something on him. That's made evident by keeping him in handcuffs and the female officer saying " Nothing?" when the gun slinger police officer returned back to the car. It's bad. Real bad in these streets of America. I'm a mother of 2 sons and I have 3 brothers. I pray for their safety everyday
