Our second day in Havana lends itself to time with the wonderful locals, tons of beautiful cars, and a walk on Malecon. An encounter with the local police reminds us we are in a communist country.

I'm from Cuba and I'm currently in Miami taking a course at George t baker, a school for A&P technicians and I just wanted to say that this video and story gave me shivers because It reminded me how messed up my country is.

These american turists are naive, they just met these two locals and said that they had good intentions. These is how turists in other countries get robbed and even murdered for different reasons.
@yaqueyaque26517 жыл бұрын
I'm from Cuba and that types of things of people arrested just because they are talking to foreign persons are very common there. They persecute people they consider are disturbing tourism without asking if you are just having a conversation with people from other country.
@JamesSullivans7 жыл бұрын
That is very sad and was eye opening for me as a traveler.
@xScionesciox6 жыл бұрын
That's bullshit. There are a few guys in Habana that speaks English and try to scam tourists that's why police control.

*Gell de Pinga* Cuba es uno de los paises con menos libertades del mundo. No hables tanta mierda todos aqui comocemos lo que es Cuba a quien tratas de engañar?
Has nothing to do with being communist. For your safety they checked their criminal records and sure enough they weren't clean. I've been traveling to Cuba for the past ten years. The safest country hands down. Of course being young and naive makes you rush into conclusions. Safe travels guys!

James, don't take this the wrong way, but don't discuss communism or politics while in Cuba. Not worth the aggravation or problems which it causes. Also be very careful on any of your postings on the Tube. Mind your P's and Q's.

Interesting experience. Thanks for sharing. Please don't think Cuba is a bad place to visit. There are many many hustlers who will approach you as genuinely as possible. Tourists Always fall for this. Then end up out of pocket in the long run. That's the reason for Undercover Police in Havana Vieja (Old Havana). If Cubans want to go to the beach, they and I know that we can get a taxi for 1cuc ($1) direct. (No need to pay more) Communism has little to do with your experience. It's just because the Police are protecting you from Hustlers. And yes, Hustlers in Cuba range from young dudes, to middle aged men and women and also Grandma's. Yes I got hustled by Grandma because she was a really good story teller haha. I live in Cuba and am from London. I hope you visit again but stay for 3 or 4 months to really understand Cuba. All the best.

Ah, I was sitting on those stairs along the Malecon two years ago - this brought back memories! Have a safe trip the rest of the way, if you don't know where to go I loved both Viñales and Cienfuegos (although they're in opposite directions and require half a day of travel each.) Thanks for the excellent videos, please keep them coming!

I am cuban and i have to say that this has nothing to do with the komunisem. In cuba prostitution is illegal the cuban police don't like to see cubans with tourist because of this. They asked for ther ID because they wanted to see if these locals always are hangig with tourist. And it seems that this is resean why they get in trouble. Pls don't judge me by my inglisch im not living in any inglisch speaking country and not a nativ speaker.

I just got back from Cuba and I learned the hustle. Locals befriend tourist and then take them for their money. The police are on top of them because they want to make it safe for people to visit. Locals try to get as much money as they can from tourists...can't blame them....but it can leave you stranded in cuba without cash.

Have you considered for a moment that the cops were protecting you from being scammed ? The more likely out come was one way or another you were going to end up paying for something. The Cuban struggle for money is real. every time I have been approached on the street it has been about money. So much my Cuban friends like to watch when I walk alone ahead to see the scams. I love Cuba and the people but you have accept that life is hard for most people.

James: the police don't just control the cubans talking to tourist because of petty crime. It's also so that tourists aren't introduced to the real cuba. Where anyone against the regime such as my husband who is a political dicident is arrested, beaten, tortured and disapear some show up dead. The Cuban people living on rations the money you spend on tourism there goes into the pockets of the regime who use it for the castros and families of generals to live the life of luxury while their own citizens are starving, with their houses collapsing on them while sandro castro grandson of fidel filmed himself driving a mercedes something a Cuban citizen will never have. They don't want you to be with cubans so you don't find out what's behind the curtain. Watch the new movie called "plantados" that's the real cuba. If you see something say something never keep walking.

Unfortunately police officers don t want foreigners to have "bad experience with local s" , that is probably what happened with your supposed friends .That s the way they act naturally , becoming friends with you but at the end they want to get some advantage from tourists it happened to me , that s why I say . We can not blame Cubans they have necessities and the need to make money selling you cigarrets, rom or anything . After that the majority are Great people
