Arrival at Sagittarius A* after a year of exploration, almost kill myself five minutes later

EDIT : I made it safely back to the Bubble in July 2017 • Escort of explorer saf...
I departed Sol on Christmas Day 2015 on an exploration voyage toward Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, 25.900 light years away from Earth.
My badly battered ship finally arrived on 1 januari 2017.
3:01 Curiosity got the better of me and I got too close to the black hole and dropped out of warp.
4:24 Trying to get back into warp and out of the danger zone I made more mistakes (I didn't realize my thrusters were still in reverse) and panic set in.
5:07 Got into warp by the skin of my teeth but overheating is already at 173%
5:21 185% overheating, modules taking massive damage and canopy begins to crack. If it shatters I'm a dead man.
5:25 188 % overheating. Modules failing left and right
5:47 Down to 6 % hull but overheating beginning to decrease
6:03 Overheating drops below 100%. I'm in the clear
Survived with a 64% cracked canopy, badly damaged modules and just 2% hull left.
Fortunately I brought some repair kits to fix the worst damage.

@@Jerorawr_XD you do know there's like a massive cluster of fuck off huge stars in stable orbits around Sag A*, yeah? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittarius_A*#Orbiting_stars And what do you mean by: "with that much turbulence, radiation accumulates faster than it can leave leading to some of the highest temperatures in the universe, only trumped by a hypernova."? That's factually incorrect: In 2019, measurements made with the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-Plus (HAWC+) revealed that magnetic fields cause the surrounding ring of gas and dust, temperatures of which range from −280 °F (−173.3 °C) to 17,500 °F (9,700 °C), to flow into an orbit around Sagittarius A*, keeping black hole emissions low. 9,700°C is low supernova are hotter than that at 55,000,000°C. Source: wiki page linked above. Also Sag A* is too large for any sustained accretion disc, anything that get's close enough to the event horizon without going into a stable orbit it just "swallows" whole. The black hole in the Eskimo Nebula SHOULD have an accretion disc but doesn't, so if you wanted to complain about a lack of accretion disc there ya go. (I'm sure there's other nebulae that have black holes without accretion discs but I've only been to the Eskimo Nebula, cause I'm lazy and haven't finished engineering yet) P.S. Don't take this as an attack or anything, I have the social skills of a dead panda and the situational awareness of a slightly more dead panda, I just really enjoy astrophysics and misinformation tilts me far to much.

I synthesized boosters for my FSD all the time. i just didn’t have the materials to synthesize heat sinks and that was really all. This comment is two years old, but lemme just tell you he's wrong. Yeah, there's only about a dozen styles of space station and half as many ground bases, but let's look at the competition: No Man's Sky has 3 shapes and they're all identical inside. So uh... Elite Dangerous wins by a mile. Oh, and the new DLC coming includes the ability to walk around on foot inside your ship, stations, and on planetary surfaces, and will include gunplay. Imagine a better Mass Effect with actual space flight. Plus you can own your own supercruiser carrier class ship that functions as a mobile space station. The only update I'm waiting for is Fleets, so I can command multiple carriers at once from my flagship. They already have AI fighter pilots you can command to act as your wing and AI crew you can hire to man the turrets and other stations on your ship.

The overheat started in normal space. When he failed to line up the vector and got the throttle confused, he should have just turned off the FSD, fixed everything and started again. He would have entered SC with much less heat on the ship and managed to escape with much less damage. Because of his proximity to the black hole, he was always going to take heat damage, compounded by the fact he took forever to enter SC :) No HS ammo was a big issue there too! ;)
@YuriPustovoit
@YuriPustovoit 6 жыл бұрын
I think the fact you had "The Center" selected in the Nav panel made things much worse. ED supercruise mechanics is designed to slow the ship down in the vicinity of selected Nav point. That's why your departure took forever, adding to the time the ship had been under heat stress.

Always, always align towards the escape vector and fully throttle up before charging the FSD. Charging the FSD is what’ll start to cook you; being aligned and at top speed means you’ll go back to supercruise the instant it’s charged, minimizing the time spent at those heat levels. Also, before going on a long expedition, make sure you’ve stocked up on engineering materials to synthesize heatsinks and AFMU refills so you don’t run out, the latter especially if you intend to use neutron jumps since each one eats away at your FSD a little. Finally, when your destination is grayed out and enclosed in a dotted circle, it means there’s something between you and what you’re trying to get to, in this case the event horizon. I’m surprised you got all the way to Sag A* without picking up on that, glad you were able to survive.

funny how fleet carriers have completely changed the risk of long distance exploration. Now you could just dial up fleet carriers owners club or the hull seals and they would pull a carrier to you for detailed repairs with a week. This man was one of the old breed explorers who left out into the void with no safety net. They laid a path for todays far safer exploration.

Does it really take a lot of real world hours to get there? How long does it take? Also, do you have to keep jumping system to system or is one long hypercruise?
@LuckyLuigi
@LuckyLuigi 3 жыл бұрын
You have to keep jumping from system to system. Ships have about twice the range now as they did then so you can fly a much more direct course as well make bigger jumps. There are also many improvement in navigation, and super long jumps by 'surfing neutron star jet'. If you only jump and refuel instead of explore like I did, you can now do it with a specially build ship in about half a day real time if you're really good.

A while back, maybe this year, i recall reading some online piece about a space-simulation type game that was somehow newsworthy because of how you could, and someone was, flying way out into the galaxy (or farther?) for a very long period of time. I guess the angle was how “realistic” it was, idk. Anyway, im wondering now what game that might have been- was it Elite Dangerous possibly? I just started playing Eve, but I want to try ED also because it’s based on our actual galaxy and maybe more single-player-ish? Or at least more laid back than Eve.

A short while later: "Canopy integrity compromised" and I instantly gasped and thought "oh crap, oh crap!". Tip for the next time you're in this sort of predicament: Drop back out to normal space and disable all non-essential systems. Those shields for example would've made a double digit % difference in heat output :). All you really need is the FSD and the Thrusters.
