We arrived at our dream off-grid Irish homestead! Having raced from Athens to France to catch our ferry before we outstayed our welcome in the Schengen zone… we made it to Cherbourg on New Year's Eve, the night before our crossing and also our anniversary.
Join us for our arrival in Ireland. A new chapter for us, embarking on new lives in the rural Irish countryside as we attempt to renovate our old stone cottage and set up our off-grid homestead.
There’s a lot to figure out, but one thing is for sure: it’s going to be a wild ride!

I’m 63 & have lived in Ireland all my life. (Co Antrim). There’s nothing to beat a starry night staring up at the sky. A lot of people think they’re really important. 10 minutes staring up gives you a real sense of perspective. My favourite time of year is lambing time. Just me & the sheep & a clear spring sky.

Hola from Spain. We upped sticks & moved to the mountains of Spain 18 years ago. We fell in love with a plot of land, no house & no idea what we would live in. We lived for 6 years in a little wooden Chalet, no water, no electric, no Internet ( that was definitely not a hardship ) Never been happier, oh and no tv. We finally built a beautiful house, lived in that for 10 years, then 2'years ago we moved again & bought an old Spanish Casita unlived in for over 20 years, so simple living started all over again. It's been hard work, but opening the door in a morning makes it all worth while. I spent a lot of my childhood in Ireland, a beautiful part of the world. Anything smaller than a village (which usually has at least a shop or pub) would be referenced by the townland. So, Cori who lives in whatever (townland), near wherever (village). Each county is divided into hundreds of townlands. Yeah, the milkyway is very cool and visible, from north Cork, where I live. Good luck!

No house pics 🥲 anyway I’m sure you’re already aware but Ireland has derelict house grants.. I’m sure a local would sort you out with someone who’d dig or connect up a well for you too so you can at least get running water. Also with living rural you’ll find locals will sort you out with plenty of turf if you wanted to go the stove and back boiler route to heat your house, radiators and water. Solar can be tricky in Ireland as you alluded to yourself in the video. I think you’d like the rustic element of a stove and backboiler set up too. Oh and not too far away in Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry there is a dark sky reserve or gold sky reserve where in there is absolute 0 light pollution and the star gazing is supposed to be out of this world. Perfect little trip if you have a camper van! Just plan ahead with a clear sky!

Your happiness and contentment really comes through the screen. Its going to be great watching you,as a family progress in this endeavour. Are you going to get some animals. One night back in 1973 (that was a long time ago) I stepped outside our house late at night into the darkness and saw the true night sky. I saw The Milky Way. This was the Oil Crisis time and all the street lights were off. Ive never forgotten that. It might be a Townland. One lot of my forebears lived on a townland in Co. Longford.

Firstly, welcome to Ireland. Based on this video I think you will fit right in. You seem to be very grounded and have a good mix of common sense and wonder at how stunningly beautiful these remote areas are. Now for the practicality of living in remote Ireland. The people are amazing and I hope that is what you experience. Be warned, the winters are long, dark, wet, cold and did I say long ? Its the 20th April and only just now is the Sun daring to appear. I cut my lawn today for the first time, up until now it was simply too wet. I wish you both the very best in your endeavours, I'll try and watch more recent videos to see how you are coping. If you haven't got one already then I'd recommend getting a telescope. It doesn't have to be expensive, I remember using my sons "toy" telescope to explore the night sky a few years while at my Mums house in the country and its was amazing. The lack of light pollution is what makes it. Even with the naked eye you can see so much more of the night sky. It makes you feel so small...... Wishing you the best with your new project.

In England a Hamlet tends to be more like what we would call a village. A group/nest of houses grouped together and maybe a shop or pub nearby. In Ireland, most townlands don't have shops or pubs and a lot don't even have dwelling houses. An English hamlet is more akin to an Irish Village really. If you go to rural Norfolk then there are lots of areas which have names but are not really considered hamlets, they are populated by farmers who farm the local land but really they are 20 mins from the nearest shop/pub etc.

@@CoriLivestheDreamLife Hmmmmm very common in rural Ireland basically one neighbor asked the other could they put it just the otherside of the fence and it was no problem they flushed the toilet and forgot about it. Difficulty will be its not your land so either you can purchase it, get it as a gift or move the tank to another location as you will never be able to sell without it sorted.There might not be another location though ......which is why its there in the first place.Good luck

We did this 16 years ago and ended up coming back to the UK. Before putting too much money in, I would research the following topics: Health Service and PHI costs, Schools, Jobs, Long mileages to everything, Heat and Light, Septic Tanks, Water Supplies, Re-sale values. A nice view means nothing if you are living in poverty. Visiting and actually living somewhere are very different things. We moved over at the same time as other people and they got trapped, whereas we kept our property in the UK and was able to bail out much easier. Good luck with your venture though, it might be perfect for you.

I hope I am very wrong, but after watching you, listening to you and your words. I honestly do not think that you will achieve what you are hoping to achieve regarding your Irish home dream . Only a major mindset change is going to help you fulfill your dreams and to be honest you ain’t every going to be willing to do that cos you’re never going to be willing to sacrifice yourself, or to fully commit yourself. Both parters need to be willing to suffer, forego, to endure severe hardships. I see you taking far more from your partner than ever you are going to be willing to give in order to achieve your dream.
