It makes sense that David told her to "do it on her own." He definitely did that with all his castings and rejections without giving up or riding on his parents coat tails. He was amazing and so is his daughter.

She barely had a connection with him at all. Her dad said so himself. He said he barely knew her at all but wished her all the best and that he was proud of her. He won’t live on through her. She was his biological child but that was it. He left her nothing and had no relationship with her.
