Triumph Stag - The Trouble with Convertible Hoods

My first Stag-back in '74 I bought from auction with a cracked distributer did not come with a convertable roof so I bought one & fitted it myself the motor company I got it from were so impressed they asked me to teach there mech's how to fit them.

@@ArryTheStag sometimes I wish I still had my stag it was a good one after i stripped & rebuilt the engine went like a bomb then--not boom-boom though sold it to a fellow who ran it for 4 years ,he 'phoned me back & tried to sell it back to me for £1450.00 that was in '78 but I'd bought TR7 then .after that another Stag.

Stag hoods only (just) fitted well when they were new, so I'm looking forward to the next video and your visit to see Craig. It looks like he has found a solution and improved the original design. It's not going to be cheap, but will be worth it I'm sure and will make your own Stag look the business. Good luck with the visit!

IMO the stag soft top looks a bit naff, just personal preference but I prefer the hardtop so much more

Thanks Harry. On another subject: What wing mirrors are on your car and are they fully adjustable? Standard mirrors are hopeless & I'm looking for a replacement

Hi Gordon - Actually ours are bog standard on the Red Barrow Stag and after some initial struggles now get on with them fine. Often all they need is a wedge under the chrome foot of the mirror to adjust so you can see out. I'm 6ft 2" so is always a challenge! Also the nut on the back can be loosend and adjusted to get the right angle. Quite a controversial topic though and many have experimented with modern other OEM mirrors. @@ArryTheStag Many thanks for your advice Tony. Its greatly appreciated, and your video on hoods is very timely. I've been using mine for the first time over the weekend at Australia's National Stag Rally (based in Adelaide). The hood is showing it's 47 years old, but the car isn't! It cruised effortlessly (and comfortably for my wife and I and our largish dog) at 110kph across Victoria and into Sth Australia, and then around the undulating roads of the Adelaide Hills. Our only problem in about 1500 km of driving was with the hood! Am contacting Craig to see if he can send to Australia. Thanks. Chrz Gordon

@@gordonbunyan You're very welcome and your journey sounds like a brilliant adventure - what fun.. in a Stag too! Duke, our Doberman just about fits in the back of our Stag with the roof on/up, although it's a bit of a squeeze for him I have to say. Much better with the roof down, however above 50 MPH he has to hunker down, as his ears flap too much in the wind! See our trip to the Seaside a couple of years ago (featuring Lady Throop (the Missis) and Downpipe Duke.. as he's known!) A beautiful part of the local area to us and we love going there all year around. Good luck with Craig - he's a handy bloke to know and I'm sure he does export too, so should be 'good under the hood!'
