Thank you for bringing to life the music of a composer who was just a name in a book previously. It was a very revealing experience. The singers were splendid.

Biber was certainly one of the superior composers of that period.

I love to watch to period instrument performances because I can then notice how instruments have changed with time. I thus noticed how thinly made were trombones made back in the days, they almost look like made out of paper when compared to nowadays'! Yet, this gave them a velvety, almost horn-like sound which very well blend with male voices. Also I admire the way Biber scored trumpets and cornetts at the same time, taking full advantage of the resources of both instruments.

Il barocco musicale austriaco, come quello pittorico delle chiese, crea un’atmosfera di colori il cui effetto è portentoso e inebria la mente e il cuore. Quando ascoltai per la prima volta questo genere musicale come “ messa di Benevolo “( messa salisburghese poi riconosciuta di Biber) eseguita dalla celebre Escolania di Montserrat, ne rimasi stupefatto. La grandiosità dei suoni e dei cori si ritrova solo nella musica della cappella di S. Petrolio. La Chiesa Trionfante!!!!!!!!!

Heinrich Ignaz von Biber ended up as Kapellemeister in Salzburg he wrote rather interesting chamber music as well as masses (Salzburgensis!) his chamber music is somewhat similar to Schmelzer in that it has a folky element. I am convinced he played his fiddle against his chest like in those old Dutch paintings instead of under the chin. Sigiswald Kuijken advocated this in his Bach sonatas and partitas. Check out Letzbor recordings on Arcana and Challenge classics. Fantastic.

Why only one treble on a part? They are overwhelmed almost all the time. Maybe three boys on a part, including solos?

Keep in mind this kind of polychoral music was originally written for huge churches - overly complex harmonies would have gotten lost, which is why the composers mostly stuck to simple diatonic harmonies.

How did that smallest soprano singer get away with ‘conducting’ himself like that? Such bad training- how obnoxious. Really off-putting.

The voices are not powerful enough. Compare and contrast with Kings Cambridge or New College Oxford UK
