I was at the match. Now 43 years later I finally see the highlights. What a thrill to have been there and to relive it today through this video. Many thanks.

Great first touch by George Armstrong around 2mins 20... knocked the ball forward with backspin so it held up for his 2nd touch - dont see that these days

Dan, Thanks indeed for these excellent videos of great Arsenal performances-this one accompanied by fine match analysis from Malcolm Allison!

Great post, although marked the beginning of Brian Moore hosting The Big Match without Jimmy Hill who by this time had left LWT to go to the BBC to host Match of the Day. Nice analysis from Malcolm Allison who looks so refreshed, presumably from a good holiday and lots of champagne. Some poignancy in this match too, as Ray Kennedy would recall some years later that it was during this match that he felt for the first time that not all was right with his health.

remember the score boards in the corners giving scores from other matches. Fondish memories from those 70's games.

I was 9 at the time and loved my soccer even though the only live games that I saw involved Cardiff City in division two and one match where Newport County played Reading. I remember crying on the coach home to the valleys as Cardiff beat Orient 1-0 and consigned my favourite team Blackpool to relegation in the last game of the season! Never forgiven em since!

This was the beginning of the end. After just missing the title the preceding spring, Bertie Mee had begun to break up the team, selling captain Frank McLintock, and most of the other '71 Double teamers would soon be marginalized. But the pieces of the '79 FA Cup winners are starting to fall into place, too. Soon, Liam Brady would become a regular.

Bertie (Mee) sat in the stand with his wife and family like any spectator. Howe on the bench shouting and pointing if not intimidating the OAP refs. Radford aged faster than any good player I ever saw - but great on his day. Kennedy was sold to Liverpool as proof that Mee had lost the plot big-time.
@neilbooth85107 жыл бұрын
Kennedy was sold because his form was poor, he was seriously unfit, and unhappy. He was pursued by Shanks who convinced Bob Paisley once he was fit, he was big and strong enough to fill the defensive midfield role that Liverpool placed so much emphasis on. Shankley was proved right. Mee didn't have any option than to sell him at that stage. As for Radford, he was old when he was playing in the mid 70s'. He was 29 when he left, which for a forward back then was 'veteran stage' of their career. Even now, by 28 they are starting to lose their sharpness. Only the very, very best can keep going (as a forward) in top flight football into their 30's even today. Better diet, better physio means defenders, midfield players, and of course keepers can go on well into their 30's, but as Lahm and Alonso have said this year, it isn't always an option due to fading fitness levels and increasing risk of injury.

Belatedly. I just realised you're comment is 10 years ago. Anyway the Gunners have had a great start to 2022/23. Coming from a Spurs fan. Respectfully of course.

oh, so now you've noticed, you guy's were dreadful, you've been relegated 4 time's in your history, you only became a winning football club from 1993 when sir alex won his first title, the first league title in 27 year's.
@redflag89706 жыл бұрын
dont talk rubbish son utd won trophys in all but 2 decades since 1900 till now n bagged a european cup 50 yrs ago. its obvious u hate utd but read up
@hooligoonerherdeie96826 жыл бұрын
fuck off you muppet, man. united were a good team in the 50's and 60's, in the busby era, but in the 70's and 80's, you were abysmal letting your standard's go down the toilet, fact is fact, you red devil's can't handle the truth, but you have the audacity to mock us for having 10 bad year's since we've moved out of highbury, and had to sell all our good player's to pay off for the emirates stadium. but at least arsenal always had the better firm, we had two in a matter of fact, "the gooner's" (who no longer exist) and "the herd" (still around, but undercover), and we have european history too, winning the european inter cities trophy in 1970 and the european cup winner's cup in 1994, but we just haven't won the champion's league version.
