I saw one of these in Skovde last month at the entrance to the army base. Beautiful, amazing that that are also amphibious and had the ability to be used like a bulldozer to cover dragons teeth or fill in anti tank ditches. Empty the Swedish museums and let them go to Ukraine and fight T55s like they were intended :)

The S tank is easily one of the most fascinating and brilliant AFV designs ever. The StuG concept as the Germans and Finns were running it at the later stages of WW2. Paired with cutting edge technology from the time. A shame no one developed the concept on. The more typical MBT concept was easier to sell I guess
@ptonpc

It's same reason you don't have Stugs and their equivalent anymore. Turreted designs can do all it can do with fewer disadvantages.. It is a great piece of tech though.
@blueberry1c2
@blueberry1c2 2 жыл бұрын
I guess typical MBTs are more flexible and less specialised. The S tank is very good at the specific job that Sweden had intended for it, essentially a mobile defence platform. An export model like it cuts out potential customers who want to use tanks for, well, other purposes.
@MarYoOPL
@MarYoOPL 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think, that StuG is same concept. StuG was "Sturmgeschütz", so it was an assault gun carrier, S Tank is designed for defense I guess.
@aidan11162

Most importantly though is that a typical MBT was cheaper to buy than continuing to develop the S-tank concept when the Cold War ended.

Turreted tanks with a well developed gun stabilisation that allows for firing accurately on the move, kind of killed the S-Tank concept as a viable MBT.

From wikipedia "In the mid-1990s, as the Swedish Armed Forces were looking for a new main battle tank, one Strv 103C was upgraded into the Strv 103D. The major changes were the installation of fire-control computer, thermal viewers for both the gunner and the commander, allowing the crew to fight at night-time and in bad weather conditions, and the installation of passive light enhancers for driving. Some minor changes to the suspension system and engine were also made. There was some consideration of adding both reactive and/or appliqué armour in the early 1990s, but, in the end, the Strv 103 was instead phased out of Swedish service in favour of the Stridsvagn 121 (Leopard 2A4) and Stridsvagn 122 (Strv 122), which entered service in 1997 (the last year that the Strv 103 was used to train tank crews). This prototype was used during the trials for the new main battle tank system for the Swedish Armed Forces alongside all the other tanks tested. For a few years this prototype was even tested under remote control. The sole Strv 103D is today on display at the Arsenalen national military vehicle museum,[18] together with some 103C models. They are all still in running order. "

In regards to it being the only tank which can drive/shoot/operate with only one crew member, I thought the T-64U variant/modernisation also allowed this using the commanders station? I might be misremembering though. It likely wouldn't be all that effective or practical in either tank due to shear overload of things to do though, it's very true that people can't multitask. I liked the video, especially the ammunition loading and storage as it's not a side of tanks you normally see yet is vitally important to their operation.

A great video on a great tank by a guy he served on the thing. I wonder when stationary how the turnrate of the tracked turret compared to say a Leopard 1, M60, AMX 30, Chieftan, T62, and T64? And, in a meeting ingagement both on the move? I was a driver on a Leo 1 later also gunner on the Dutch prtl version of Gepard. Being both gunner and driver and having the comander in the same override role I guess on the move the S tank outperformend them all in coordenated reaction time. Also the speed of succesive shot is much higher than any loader can match. Also the S tank will win hands down any ambush scenario. Also capable of getting the hell out of any situation with the front armour and gun pointing at the enemy. Smaller target. A brilliant piece of engineering. Adding thermal imaging digital balistic computor this tank would still be a viable asset in a defensive at and infantry support role. I even guess that adding reactive armour would make even give top attack guided missiles a hard time.
@martinbredberg7616
@martinbredberg7616 10 ай бұрын
I don´t know about stationary traverse... not super fast, but we never had a problem of keeping track of our targets. If going full flank ahead, you could do a 360 in about 2 seconds, depending on surface. Had to shout "Koppling-broms!" first, to alert the other crew members and and give them the chance to grip and hold on to something. Which I often forgot, in the heat of the moment. Thermal imaging would have been great, but ballistic computer only for targets beyond the horizon. Everything we saw we would hit with the first shot. My company shot some 2000 live rounds and maybe 20 000 "laser-dome" rounds and I never heard of anyone missing. According to un-official records or "teaching papers", the probability for 3 S-tanks in ambush position taking out 6 advancing T-72 was 86%. We always trained against the Russians, and even had a special mark in the sight to indicate when the approaching russian tank would be 100% knocked out. We learned about their tanks, APC´s, helicopters, landing crafts, mines, ground attack planes, ... it was really a cold war, and every Swedish male was being trained for it. Gunner/driver 103, 1991.

Formidable! Imagine a new S-tank today, retaining the extremely low silhouette & hydraulics, but with updated optics, sensors, networking, an autoloading 120mm, oh, & how about reducing the necessary crew from 1 to 0. A smaller, (semi-)autonomous hunter/killer S-tank would absolutely shred current production T-72s, or whatever they are calling them these days.

@TheDiner50
@TheDiner50 2 жыл бұрын
It is hard to see. But I think Chieftain (World of Thanks) showed a camera inside talking about how it works. There is a elevator (lift) that brings the rounds up to the breach. And I presume the rounds are stacked so that the elevator go down and a round is pushed onto the elevator and then brings the round to the gun. You picked your load out and had banks to switch between. AP, HE, Misc. Not really a carousel or fancy robots picking the rounds out of bins. They more or less are stacked like a gun magazine and the rounds are pulled out at the bottom and transported up the elevator. So like 3 gun magazines upside down with push rods to move the rounds on and off the elevator that lift the rounds up to the breach. Not sure but I guess it is the easiest and most reliable way to do it. Armor and tight spaces do not make it easy to show how stuff works. And there probably are baffles and stuff to show down the rounds falling down into the magazine when you load the mags. So it probably is quite compact and non serviceable inside of there.

@@ned900 The ammo is stored in rows, as explained by Diner. There is 3 selectable compartments. One is for 20 rounds the other for 25. Store 3 is only 5 rounds and are hand-cranked into the loader from the radio operators position (usually smoke or other special rounds). Loadout is usually 20 HE and 25 AP + 5 smoke. You can only select from wich store you will get your ammo, not a specific round. That is why Stefan said that you need to consider the engagement before you load the stores, but standard load will take care of most situations The ammo storage is at the back and encased in armor plating,10mm? (not sure about the thickness). After the gun is fired the spent casing is ejected from the tank out the back, the breech drop down to collect the next round and the breech swings back and is ready to fire. About 2-3 seconds for the complete cycle.

It was hard to spot, fast and had exellent mobillity and was often the first tank to spot the opponent and bring the gun on target. The gun speaks for it self. The long 105mm, combined with the sights on the 103, was capable of taking on targets at 3km range with very good precision. The domestically developed APDS was an upgrade from the very good standard APDS used in the Centurion. Ofc, the moment reliable and good gun stabilisation was a thing, it lost it's edge.

That's a common missunderstanding. Sweden has been a part of many wars/conflicts from then up to now. Congo, Jugoslavia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Mali to name a few.

NLAW is also a fantastic Swedish design, with key elements from other international companies, mainly Britain.

Simultaneously with the development of the NLAW, a defensive Anti-NLAW system was also developed. How the latter works is highly classified, and evil NATO doesn't know a shit about the system. It's extremely effective though, and easy to use, and will only be distributed to Swedish troops in a situation of war on Swedish territory, i.e. it's of course not for export. Needless to say, it's also very much effective against Javelin and similar anti-tank systems, making them pretty much obsolete. Perhaps I'm just joking here, who knows...

@@ilex8426 makes sense though, why wait for your rival to develop a countermeasure when you can do it first, and learn more about your system and then use that information to develop the next generation 🧐

No!!!, but they almost always need the support of infantry/panzergrenadier /pansarskytte, to protect them against difficult to detect NLAW groups, which is very much dependent on the terrain of the battle.

Presenter has no charisma and confidence, seems more self conscious about being nervous than focused on giving an insightful presentation on the tank. Nearly fell asleep.

@Hartvig Flögh You're shy because you think people are analyzing you and you're scared to be seen for your insecurities. It's better to focus on others and giving others a good experience. When we care more about others we stop being shy.

@@berg699 I don't recognise any of what you are talking about in this video? Remember that it is a second language he's talking in. And the swedness isn't really about shyness, it's an old culture thing that still lives on in some ways.

12 min and forward; thats why its important to know what the target is before shooting. (if don't wanna go outside and fix the load by reloading again). That says this little beast becomes so much better in efficiency when used together with rest of army. 20-30 of theese in a attack formation would do great against second strongest army today. Just saying.
