I remember that I had to drive about 1800 kms in about 2 days before to make that gig. I was in a small town above Stockholm, Sweden. Earth wind and Fire had a huge hit LP on every radio station and my girl friend's son kept singing ALL of the lyrics on the record over and over and over again................ An amazing experience.

All three of you looked like you were having a fun time. What was the occasion and how did the three of you approach this? Did you just go out cold and total improve with no discussion or did you say something like why don't each one of us solo and then towards the end of each solo start playing a groove to set up the next soloist? BTW you and Simon are welcome to come over my house and jam anytime. I've got exactly three drum kits set up all the time (13 sets altogether and most of the other drums are in my garage which is right next to the area with the three sets. Pictures of Art, Buddy Rich and yourself are lining the walls so I would make sure I had a picture of Simon up there before he arrived so he wouldn't feel left out lol.

I've been watching Simon Phillips since 1978 and this is the first video I've ever seen of him playing a drum kit other than Tama. AND Billy Cobham is using Tama's Artstar Cordia which was their newest and top of the line at the time WITH Paiste cymbals!!! Everyone thinks that the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert started the three drummer solo thing with Colaiuta/Gadd/Weckl. ALSO Art Blakey with the 3 mounted/2 floor tom configuration which is the configuration that a lot of players went to in the late 1980's thru 1990's. Art is such a stoical figure. I've never seen Cobham and Phillips on the same stage together!!! This is a rare bird!!!

Three of my favourite drummers, Billy you are inspirational, not just for your brilliance, innovation and multifacetedness as a drummer...But for the sheer enjoyment you derive from your art and your great generosity of spirit toward other artists. And what can one say about 'Thunder', Art Blakey? Other than he was one of the true greats of drumming. Interestingly another like Krupa inspired by Chick Webb's aggressive swing style. Like you Billy another true pioneer he was to Be-bop and its development as you are to fusion, great to see you sharing the same stage! And Simon Phillips what a thoroughly durable and talented drummer with great touch and no little subtlety. It is hard to believe that he was a rock/metal drummer for a large part of his career given the the feel he has for Jazz/fusion etc. Thanks for this!

He was already well established by this time, and he was working extensively with Mike Oldfield. He'd already worked with Jeff Beck, Judas Priest, and 10CC. (One side of the 10CC album was Steve Gadd, the other was Simon.) I caught SImon in Wurzburg Germany supporting Mike Oldfield, and he blew my mind. I was only fourteen at the time, and a trumpet player, but my best friend was an insanely gifted drummer who just sat in absolute amazement. A year or two later he met Simon at the Frankfurt Musikmesse and had a chance to talk with him about the Oldfield show. Simon, I believe, started playing professionally at 12 years old. By the time this was shot, he'd already been a pro for quite a while.

Simon Phillips sounds great on these Gretsch drums. His kits always sound phenomenal but this kit makes him play a little differently. I heard a couple of Gadd licks in there which I have never heard him do before.
@terrenceolivido741 Жыл бұрын
every drummer play the maldicho hell out of these drums. Simon Phillips was a revelation. Art Blakey sets the tone for both of the others. Billy Cobham in particular plays one of his most musical solos. Phillips outdoes everyone, but the presence of Blakey seems to set the tone for the others.

gas. wouldn't have expected to see these three drummers together. vague impression: blakey's playing is more fluid, graceful and dance-like ('musical' in the sense in that there is no point in music being otherwise); Philips and Cobham's playing here is more focused on rock dynamics (like studio musicians); but all good (of course). kudos to Philips to be up there playing with these guys. I admire the way he can seemingly be equally at home in any jazz or rock setting.
@Oneness1008 жыл бұрын
Art Blakey was still kicking some ass. He's old school where he still has old heads with the center has worn away. I had a drum instructor that did the same thing. I never understood that since the sound isn't the same when the coated finish wears off. Was it done out of laziness or they just didn't think to change the heads every so often?
