I found this old Art Deco Chest of Drawers listed on Facebook Marketplace for $30. Although the Art Deco Style originated in the 1920s and 1930s, I cannot say with certainty the age of this dresser specifically. The dresser had been painted yellow. It was my intention to refinish this piece and complete a full restoration if necessary. Luckily, there were only minor structural repairs for this project. I stripped the old finishes using paint stripper, sanded the entire piece, and applied several final finishes using General Finishes products and Howard's Feed and Wax wood polish and conditioner. This is one of my favorite furniture restorations. You don't want to miss this transformation.

This is the first tutorial of yours that I have seen. My first observation is that you have integrity. You don’t do glitz and hype and that means I subscribed because I can learn from you. You don’t just paint and update but did well at making the piece restored to its’ former glory. You speak calmly and you don’t just chatter to make yourself be something that you aren’t. Bravo on doing a great job restoring, teaching and contributing to a healthy and peaceful KZbin community. Glad I found your channel.

I've long thought how much I'd rather see shows with people like you bringing "updated"/"renovated" furniture and spaces back to their original and historical splendor. No, not everything is worth restoring back to original, but so many things people mark as "dated" and tear down, pull out, paint, and overall modernize are absolutely worth saving and preserving. No, this dresser is not everyone's style, but that coat of paint didn't really change it's style. I would say it would have been better left alone, but then you wouldn't have gotten ahold of it and not only put it back right but probably better than it had been in a long time -- if ever. As a Historian and furniture lover, I thank you for what you do. I get tears in my eyes on almost every single one of your videos watching you take the time to fix and honor these gorgeous pieces of furniture that just needed someone to see their natural beauty as worth the time and effort. Thank you. ❤ Edit: And thank you for sharing that love and effort with all of us.

I completely agree. It breaks my heart to see perfectly good old pieces of furniture turned into something "modern," with people acting as if this is an accomplishment. It's like painting over a Monet or Picasso because it was just an old painting. The level of ignorance in people today is astounding. I, myself, have restored quite a few pieces of furniture, as well as stripping and re-finishing an entire house's chestnut woodwork, including the entire stairway.

based on the paint and the liners I would guess this cabinet was something people had and wanted to use in a little kids room. I love the restoration, but I don't blame the previous owners for painting it at all. They repuposed something they didn't have a use for in its current state. Good chance that if they didn't try to repurpose it would have ended in a landfill, never to be seen again.

I personally dont like this dark walnut color. Art deco stuff and dark color are really not fit for my eyes. I either would use a much lighter color or paint it as the prwvious owner. Maybe white or some very light blue fit it much better.

Bravo. Your editing, close-ups, slo-mo and music choices just keep getting better and better. It's the small attention to details, like throwing the screws into the magnetic dish, the close-up action of stripped paint pushing towards the camera and then the final reveal and it's many angles with before and after. What a beautiful ending to a story well told.

@@greenbeansboro Once older pieces are treated like this (badly painted, appliqued, etc.) they are far MORE likely to go into a landfill. If they don't, they end up requiring even more time and skill to actually restore them. "Upcycling" good pieces to make them "on-trend" creates waste.

Hi Barry. Gorgeous piece of furniture! I've been interested in redoing furniture since I was a child. I repainted my bedroom furniture at about age 12. I redid a rocking chair I got at a garage sale at about age 19. Didn't do too much over my adult years due to working all the time. Now that I'm retired I've been trying to get back to it. Love your technique and look forward to learning more how to take some discarded, unwanted pieces back from the brink of the trash.

It was almost as if that poor dresser heaved a sigh of relief when that paint came off. It is almost certainly from the 30's by the look of the construction. Too often we are too quick to throw things away but that dresser is almost 100 years old and still doing the job it was made to do. I am thrilled that you revealed that glorious wood grain it's like a burst of sunshine. Thank you so much this made my day. Haha I used to be a cabinet/bespoke furniture finisher and I remember a customer coming in and she wanted us to spray a brighter yellow (than the video) on a slim table and I remember hiding my horrified panic when she continued with …”I also have these beautiful, colorful beads! They’re all different shapes and sizes and I would like to include these somehow.” There was literally a pause because I think none of us at the shop knew how to respond so we just said “let’s just start off with the color and perhaps figure that part out later.” As soon as I got that yellow thing out of the spray booth I wanted it out of there because it hurt to have something to do with ruining it. I was used to trying to show off the beautiful grain and stuff so I didn’t glue beads on it either. I shudder…

And normally we didn’t do restoration work like that it was a lot of making customers sapele tables, cabinets, or teak doors. So that was random right from the beginning.

Last weekend I bought my first carbide scraper inspired by y’all on KZbin. I’m amazed by how much it can do! I’m doing my learning process on a very beat up piece from my basement storage. I know some people find finish removal tedious but I also find it very therapeutic and relaxing. :) I’m already looking forward to acquiring more tools and what future prices I can do. I know some people do furniture flipping for extra income or their job. I’m sure from that standpoint with 10 hours of scraping you would lose money on this piece. But trees for lumber are a dwindling resource and modern mass manufactured furniture is often very low quality with particle board that starts disintegrating in a couple years. So it’s my personal view that all older furniture that could be rescued is great to rescue, both for environmental reasons and so people can have beautiful pieces like this in their homes. Of course not everything is salvageable, but you won’t know that unless someone who knows what they’re looking for inspects the damage and stars scraping the paint to see what’s underneath. Because sometimes you find solid wood and veneer in decent shape that wish some patient tlc can end up looking as gorgeous as this. I love Art Deco style and I absolutely love how this piece turned out. If I had it I wouldn’t sell it either ;)

More than a little streamline moderne about that piece and the proportions give it an early 1940s flavour. Wonderful that there was so little damage under the yellow paint too, especially on that curved top. The black paint in the handle recesses might have been original, it helps make the handles visually pop out and wasn't uncommon for pieces of this style. It's a lovely tactile looking piece, especially the curved edges on the top.

@@vbee3571 It could even be early 50s from a more conservatively styled collection. The general proportions of it suggest a fairly solid mid-range 40s piece, not yet influenced by Atomic Age styling and coming out of the more angular Art Deco of the pre-war era. Post-'45 would certainly make sense.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the live stream, Barry. This dresser is lovely. I really like the color of the antique walnut stain! I also learned something from you this time. What a beautiful job! I really appreciate people who rescue and completely restore the things from our history so we can have a glimpse at that moment in time. This piece turned out stunning. My Mom was born in 1930 so this piece could have easily been owned by her parents. Didn't realize you are in Madison! Our friend Larry S. lives there as well. Larry is quite the craftsman as well. We are going to send him your link and hope you two can get together. I do have a question or two. Is it ok to go against the grain of wood with staining and the steps beyond? Is it a technique for a certain effect? Maybe it could be an artistic implement. You see, I was always taught to go with the grain of the wood, but as the decades progress, everything is remade with new knowledge. So I was curious. Thank you
@MadCityModern
@MadCityModern 2 жыл бұрын
I would love to meet Larry. Also, once you reach the point of staining, it is more important to use a random swirling motion for the staining. This helps work the stain into the fibers of the grain. Once applied, it is good to wipe the excess in the direction of the grain. If any streaks are left behind, they will be less visible if they follow the grain pattern. Same goes for topcoats

Hello Barry - my wife and I have just started watching your videos and they really are very enjoyable. Congratulations on producing such lovely content that features your skill and patience. We eagerly await the next…🙂 One thing occurred to me. For your safety, have you been checking for lead content in the paints before stripping them? You don’t seem to mention this and it may be something worth touching on as, like us, viewers may want to tackle their own paint stripping and not be aware of the dangers of older paint finishes. Just a thought. Keep up the great work.

I was simultaneously stunned and saddened by this transformation. You really restored it to its original glory, but also stripped back its history in the process. Somebody took the time to customize this with a decent paint job-maybe giving a coming of age teen a sense of independence or finding a way to work it into a new home without discarding it. We'll never know the reason. I'm sad that history is no longer visible. Not to say that you shouldn't have done this, it is yet another story in the long life of this dresser. An act can be many things at once, there's no wrong choice (as long as it doesn't involve spray paint). And it did turn out beautifully
