Graham Lyle and Benny Gallagher wrote this song. Most successful pop songwriters in Scotland, and performers. We need to bow down to them in praise for this delicate, beautiful song. Should be the theme song New York!
@walterpewen79038 жыл бұрын
Heard it when it came out, never knew who wrote this majestic piece. The line "New York, you've got money on your mind." No one has ever said what the city is about as well.
@mathmusic14908 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The city is a good symbol of much that is right with the USA, but it is also, the symbol, in my view, of the materialism, superficiality and greed that is taught from generation to generation in the USA as well. None of that brings peace of mind. Peace is free. It's the yearning inside you for peace and serenity that you can feel in your heart......for free!

Yep we ought to, brilliant musicians and songwriters from my part of the world!

Math Person+ I know so many wonderful New Yorkers--generous, intelligent, open-minded, creative--the farthest thing from "materialism, superficiality and greed." New York is a lot of things. But be careful with generalizations. I'm sure those elements exist in New York. But they don't define the New York I know.

Makes me melancholic about NYC, and I've never been there. Still it feels as if I wandered through the city in the 70's and I'm so familiar with the music from that place in the 70's. Very strange!

Lyrics New York, to that tall skyline I come Flyin' in from London to your door New York, lookin' down on Central Park Where they say you should not wander after dark New York, like a scene from all those movies But you're real enough to me, but there's a heart A heart that lives in New York A heart in New York, a rose on the street I write my song to that city heartbeat A heart in New York, love in her eye An open door and a friend for the night New York, you got money on your mind And my own words won't make a dime's worth a difference So here's to you New York New York, now my plane is touching down

It's the early eighties I'm talking of and I had played this on a jukebox in a bar near the beach. For us all it was a pub crawl that we were on. We'd were just heading off to the next port of call and the song came on the speakers. I said hang on a minute. Let's just say nobody seemed to mind. There is something very special about this beautiful recording...

I first heard this song performed by Art Garfunkel at the Simon and Garfunkel Concert (Sept 1981) in Central Park, which was finally broadcast on TV in the UK in Summer 1982. It seemed to sum up and evoke everything that New York was about and stood for. A place I have never visited and yet, appreciate from the great songs and performers there. I believe this Art Garfunkel song is close to being my favourite, although somehow 'Looking For The Right One' is still just edging it!
