Thanks for making this video it was interesting and informative. I think right now most artists I know are experiencing some sort of crisis and I myself am going through it, but I guess talking about it, discussing it, can help shed light on some ideas of how we can go about getting through this difficult time.

I am sorry to say but the bed and fridge metaphors are so obvious that they are loosing their message and the content has been done and dusted already... also don't we have enough bad news news in the newspapers do we really want to see this in galleries?

Well, she is relatively new to making art so yes the metaphor is kind of plain. That I agree. But about repeating the news, I think she has all the rights to tell her personal story even if you have seen it on the news. It makes it more valid, not less valid. It’s different: the news is about a collective of people, and her art is an individual’s story. I get what you mean, because I said it exactly the same to Wang Bing’s film. Last week I was at IDFA the biggest documentary film festival attending a talk by one of the most famous documentary filmmakers, Wang Bing. Someone asked me if I like his work, I said they were not my favorite because his films are about things we see every day, like people losing their jobs etc. “I have seen them on the news”, I said. But again, he is not remaking the news, he is making documentary in an artistic way. The news reporting has just validated his story, like “it’s for real”. If I like it or not, it’s just my personal taste.

The question is more "Do we really need to see this in galleries" than "Do we want". Because this is up to anyone, and if you don't want to, don't go, there are different kinds of galleries. But the need is debatable, as the protest art is aimed at people who know about the problem already. "People smelling their own fart" So it comes to "How to do it well". Most artists doing protest art are just, well, protesting, they don't solve the problem they point to, even on a small scale. I think the key is here. Otherwise, it's another Ship of Fools example.
