I love your approach to "less is more" and make sure it is music and not just over complicated.

Thanks. As Charlie Parker said, “It’s just playing clean and looking for the pretty notes.”

This is the best description of 'who, what, where, and how' to use drop chords I've seen. I've been backing fiddlers playing "boom chuck" four-finger chord rhythm for 45 years and I never grasped the 'less is more' concept, probably because fiddlers need a solid base? I'm self taught. My 'secret passion' has always been Big Band tunes (because that's where 'the music' is) so I've worked up my own style of chord voicings with me singing. I've come to realize it's restrictive because I've boxed myself into a memorized pattern. I'm working on expanding my use of chords and drop chords seems to be the answer. Thanks!

For some styles, repetition is expected. You need to lay down the time. I like to think big band brass punches and kicks when comping, but when I'm playing in one, it's usually playing time.

Ed Bickerts comping on Pure Desmond is an absolute masterclass in comping. He played a tele on the session and you’d swear the accompaniment was a Fender Rhodes! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Lorne Lofsky as Ed was a huge influence and colleague that recorded with Ed on an ibanez Roadster Strat.
