Who invented mosaics?

It's really not the Romans who elevated mosaics "to the level fine art". Pebble mosaics were already being laid in Macedonia in the 4th century BCE and highly naturalistic opus vermiculatum mosaics originated in the Hellenistic kingdoms (possibly in Alexandria) in the late 3rd century BCE. And even many Roman mosaics bear the signatures of Greek artisans.
