What if life is not just about what’s right or what’s wrong-but what’s good, what’s better, and what’s best? And what if what’s best-in your organization, your relationships, and your life-is something deeper and more profound than you ever realized? In this talk, Travis Murray shares lessons from his idyllic childhood in the Blue Ridge mountains. Drawing upon these lessons, and his years of experience in the business world, Travis explains a way of being in the world and relating to others that is, indeed, “best.” An Appalachian American, born and raised in the river bottom farm fields at the foot of Cold Mountain (yes, the one from the novel), Travis Murray had a childhood similar to what we read about in Huckleberry Finn. While Gardening, Farming, Hunting, fishing and foraging with his father and grandfather, Travis learned to cultivate the land and steward principles that apply to people and organizations’ management and leadership for future generations. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I’ve felt led to focus on stewardship for this next year of my life. Looked for a talk/sermon (there aren’t many!) here on KZbin. This really, really blessed me. Stewardship is the highest form of strategy. Thanks so much!

Travis takes us back to a simpler time--and uncovers principles that can lead us into a much brighter future. Listening to Travis is a real taste of Appalachia. I could listen to this man talk all day!

Good re-focus for the soul! An important message, Mr. Murray. Stewardship requiring embracing and integrating the past, the deliberate, habitual, and meticulous grasp of details in the present, and the being mindful that responsibilities for and in the future ensure a vital legacy. Stewardship should be a concept taught from toddlerhood to adulthood. Well told, informational and inspirational!

Shifting from “rightfully yours” to being in relations and cherishing the relations. It’s truly the art as a way of being or attitude of thinking that cultivates the minds, culture and society to a more sustainable world. What frustrates me is that no matter how hard a person or a group of people try and keep this practice of stewardship, it ends up being overpowered by linear way of practices or thinking of few as the practice of stewardship was not meant to take over others or dominate them as a power struggle and we live in a society that often resort to power games or monopoly. Bees, for instance, are disappearing as a result of irresponsible competitions in industries, no matter how much love and care the bee keepers poured into them. However, I believe the stewards are perseverant and would survive all kinds of blows and bombshells from out there. If they are ever gone, that means the world has ended.
