This is an excellent way to breakdown how to get the members of your team to outperform the traditional norms. I am a 1969 baby and Hamza Khan is absolutely right. In order for individuals to exceed your expectations and the expectations they have set for themselves, you must lead them! Let them go! People who are managed hate to go work on Monday. They are always watching the second hand tick around the clock and they are not as productive. Individuals who are 'properly' led are inspired [influenced] to be great. They virtually never leave 'work' because they are committed to the success of the organization. You manage systems and processes. You lead people. Great talk @HamzaK

Agreed. When routine work becomes overly 'routine', it becomes important to find more important ways of motivating team members, like making them aware that they enjoy being there, by choice, so they are more likely to be in a positive state when there Or to realize the hidden value that exists around them. Or make friends with like minded people there.

Managing the work v. managing the person is a powerful way to unleash potential by trusting the person to make responsible decisions (100% autonomy) and ensure successful, measurable results are delivered (100% accountability). It is long overdue to move away from location/time based thinking and into outcome based thinking. Work is something you do, NOT some place you go.

I understand he got a good point. I also used to have this point of view bc this is how I can work well. But overtime I realized that this view is a bit naive. This is with the assumption that every person in the team can self-manage. In practice this is difficult to achieve especially if you work in a team with diverse demographic. My boss tries to manage with leadership. good thing he has good patience, bc even I'm frustrated with his problem bc some people just can't be left with "rooms for creativity". I learnt a lot from this and realized my earlier naivety.

Excellent talk, thank you. IMV a good manager (I've only ever worked for one), needs four qualities: 1. a good understanding of the business and finance; 2. good organisational skills to ensure people are clear about their roles and carry them out; 3. work hard as expected of employees, lead by example; 4. good people skills, motivating (I hate to use the word 'manage') staff to carry out their jobs effectively. Good management is almost invisible, it goes on behind the scenes, but bad management leaves huge gaps in morale & performance, & leaves a vacuum for the worst of office politics.
@stephencarlsbad5 жыл бұрын
Quote: "You manage things and you lead people/" I agree. People are much too complex to manage. Too many emotions, thoughts, interests, wants, needs, biases, likes, dislikes which = too many variable outputs per management input. You'll never get maximum output trying to manage this range of human complexities, it's too complicated with too many unseen triggers for negative reactions and negative results. Leading is a support based creative endeavor/relationship. If people are giving the reigns, opportunity, and inspiration to be their best, then you never have to constantly tell them to be their best, they're already motivated. If they're motivated ppl will ask for input and assistance. If they don't, then they'll show this in their results and won't be around very long to drag the company down if they simply are interested in being productive and attempting to achieve at their highest level.

It's hard when as a manager you feel you're being a good leader, a good example- being on time, doing the tasks needed, responding to emails and phone calls- the "traditional" values that are expected while at work or even in life, but then you see those around you that will be on their phones watching movies or social media instead of doing what is needed; come in to the office late often, taking long breaks or extended lunches, having a pattern of calling in on a Monday and or Friday.

No! No ! Never call anyone your manager! You are the manager of yourself and your life! That position is never delegate to someone else!! No one wants to be managed!! Allowing someone to do what they love in their job and not "expect" then to work is also the key to success. Example. It is my job to sell product in retail, BUT I LOVE to help women feel good about themselves. So me being allowed to just be myself and HELP women at the boutique I work at, the sales increase. As a leader, he or she should always lead by example, put your foot forward and do work you expect others to do and do all things in the open and do them well. Never ask anyone to do a task, but invite them to join you (the team). In most cases the team who sees their leader working hard will automatically want to help. I believe when we as leaders show the way by our hard work, involvement with our team and then have an honest follow-up for good and bad work. We develop a good team by our presence in the business we are challenged to run and operate. The leaders biggest challenge today is "social media vs. work ethics".

Watching this made me feel better about that my assistant sucked. I had never had an employee like that, and I just want everyone to feel autonomous, supported, safe, and trusted. I usually have a thing that needs to be done, a logical reason for it, then an emotional reason for it, and then how it’s rewarding. Logos, pathos, and ethos. Are you at your desk all day? I don’t care. I walk around watching videos about how Microsoft dynamics works with airpods in. I assume my team does the right thing, I trust them. I’ve only just in the last few years learned how to be on time to work. It’s a legitimate struggle. I’m great and I’m late, I think within reason is fine. Just be on time for meetings because everyone is waiting for you and wants to go back to normal life. And always, remember that burning yourself out is a problem that can last years, but taking a personal day to fully relax and unwind (get a massage) is only takes a day.

There are people in the world who are either driven or not. Lazy or not. You can't convince someone to be something they don't have the desire to be. I didn't start working hard until I got to a point in my life where I wasn't getting where I wanted to go. I understood the principle of hard work, but never applied it because I hadn't gotten to the point of being so sick and tired of not moving forward that I was willing to do whatever it takes. Every one has their own reasons for working hard and moving towards their dreams. Not everyone has an amazing boss like him. However, I believe it comes from within and you can draw it out of yourself and achieve more than you ever thought you could, but it's gotta start with YOU. It's great to have those people who motivate you, but you could at any time fall back into a place of complacency until you decide to be a hard worker and accomplish your dreams.

There might be confusion about working "hard" and start time and where. I'm not sure that this talk is about lazy employees as it is about employees who realize that they are not willing to adhere to the 20th century model of line management. This really depends on your personnel and your support of your higher ups. If you have the ability to put the team together, then it’s workable. And change them if you need to. And you don’t have upper management that doesn’t support your efforts, them there’s a problem. This is great, if you can find it.

It is better to lead than to manager. Leaders are greater than managers.whenever, I am working in group, I love to lead them to motivate and encourage them.

There are 3 main leadership styles: transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire. By research the worst type is laissez-faire and the best is transformational leadership. The speaker talks about laissez-faire with certain aspects of transformational leadership so honestly idk how to feel about it

He's so right. My boss is managing me, not leading me. I don't want him to manage my time on when should i finish some tasks. I want to do it on my pace. I can finish it faster or later, but ut should on my term. There're many Times I don't want work for a week, it is for my mental health, but my boss still want me to do some tasks.

Team members are passionate about doing things their own way. At times not realizing "their way" was your way all along. Someone will believe in something much more completely and passionately if it is their own idea. Especially one that you supported as their credible coach or mentor. So give them the knowledge, tools, and autonomy to make good decisions and have brilliant ideas and get out the way. They'll come to the same conclusions you did and it'll work...or a different conclusion than you did and it'll work even better.

to lead is to manage, and to manage also requires leading. there’s no us vs them.. there is just “is”.

Managers push from the back, leaders pull from the front. When you push a chain, it goes where it goes, when you pull a chain, it follows you. A chain of command is called that for a reason. It wants to be lead, not pushed.

@@peaceall43650 if there is solid transformational leadership, where the employees truly believe in the organization, then they are self motivated. That means that if they fail to do something, they don't believe it is relevant to the goal. That means it's not a motivation problem, it's a communication problem. In other words, no one adequately communicated the importance of the task, so they don't think it is important to the organization. Alternatively, the task really isn't important to the organization, and therefore procedures need to be adjusted.
@peaceall436506 жыл бұрын
agree when it is assuming the followers are motivated and the work culture is conducive. sometimes, the work culture needs adjustment and a change is required. in this context, i don't think you can just only apply transformational leadership to get the desired outcomes.. i feel that applying transformational leadership or transactional leadership or both will depend on the context.

Great and brilliant! I was applying technique of leading not managing in my company in Uzbekistan. It was start up, with budget 7K. Everyone was surprised and suspicious about working on result, wherein employees’ time management up to them and they have a choice to come office or not. Thank God, for 5 years we have been operating in marketing field, and team members are result oriented.

You cannot change people when they are grown ups, change the environment they are working on and they will adapt...thats good leadership. I manage projects but I lead the people to deliver the project where our clients expected their physical precense from time to time. It depends on the nature of the business. I ask you now, would you like for your doctor to operate on you remotely or your country leladers running the country remotely?

A coach also sets standards and maintains discipline. Sports professionals turning up late for their team training could easily disrupt team cohesion over time. We can all be late at times, sometimes is it not just about excepting responsibility and taking it on the chin...

This sounds beautiful in theory. What about the laziness? Why assume we are not(lazy) how does this the fact there is millions of distractions.
@ingwit41365 жыл бұрын
This is not a theory. If the work doesn't get done, intervene when key timelines or quality is not met. Most information professionals want to get their work done and to get a good job. For certain jobs, facetime is needed, but it can be modified.
