No one is like Art Pepper. It is always a harmony of refined beauty.

I can’t explain it..but I know it when I hear it….. the pure essence of pure jazz.

I had the pleasure of playing a wedding gig with Art. After the wedding ceremonies were over, the entire wedding party and guests, took their chairs and placed them on the dance floor, sat down and listened to Art, as if it were a concert, ( to me it was ). Also on the gig was drummer Lou Malin. In the late fifties, early sixties, Art used to work a joint in San Pedro, Ca., I believe was called the Spot. Thank you Art, for your incredible gift.

Possibly the greatest ballad player jazz had. Art was not afraid of playing those smears and slurs that can't be put on music notation but a seasoned listener understands. My favorite alto player. Jackie Mack 2nd.

Art Pepper on slow ballads was a master. he never played one the same way twice. The only guy i’d listen to every version of “over the rainbow” by.
@stefanomoretti36644 жыл бұрын
couldn't be better explained... "Over the rainbow" is so trite, and yet it becomes beautiful melodic material in Art's hands, heart and whatever it takes to play this way.

I also commend author Michael Connolly in acknowledging the gifts of Art Pepper in the development of his character Harry Bosch. Art’s artistry is an integral part of Amazon’s detective series Bosch.

@@janiceblacburn9793 Your welcome! Also, Connolly's books in the Harry Bosch series are splendid detective stories. The first book I read in the series was Angel's Flight. This is a fine police procedural with an explosive conclusion.

I had the good fortune to see Art and then to meet George Cables , c. 1984. This is lovely to hurtful, for any individual can relate to it, contemplate, regress to an absorption, because this is a test, a challenge, a wonder, for any player, any listener who hopes to resume believing in self, in art, in humanity, in anything wondrous this music inspires. Gorgeous. We do, and should love, the challenges such gifts to us offer.

Over the years there have been Many Alto/ Tenor Players. Only very few became / become magnets of deep heartfelt emotion. Art Pepper holds back just enough to extend the importance of each note as an increment of its place and to the composition. He allows his partners the opportunity to present their talents in similar fashion. He plays at a pace lifting what he has to work with to the next level. The style he exudes belongs to him alone. Thank you for inviting us in.

@xxczerxx Жыл бұрын
Unbelievably beautiful. I think alto players specifically will appreciate the complexity of his sound, it's genuinely hard to explain. NO other alto player conveys as much emotion as Art did. There's tiny nuanced lilts, slurs, stutters...and it goes way beyond 'technique', it's just pure expression. Just incredible.

I was on a Carnegie Hall line waiting for an Art Pepper ticket , and got it only after the box office guy assumed I wanted one for Vladimir Horowitz. But the concert turned out differently because Art had just died and Sonny Stitt came on instead. Also this Body and Soul is beautiful and a match for Dexter Gordon's version at the Village Vanguard.

He had personal problems which made him difficult to promote & make money out of him. That's why the public don't know. We hear him, we know. He expressed IDEAS. He was an individual while the rest of us wiggle our fingers trying to sound like Bird to impress people. The sincerity of Art Pepper = a Music lesson...freedom to be ourselves.
