ART PRO VLA Compressor Hardware Overview

Quick look at the hardware inside the ART PRO VLA. Mine had low audio output levels due to bad tubes along with some other small issues.

I bought one of their 1U rackmount DPS II digital valve preamps, back in 2005 when I worked for the UK distribution company Sonic 8 Ltd. Excellent preamp although it has a quirk, where the phantom power is applied to both the front XLR inputs and the rear 1/4" jack inputs at the same time. So you have to remember to not have any other gear plugged in the rear sockets when switching phantom on, or you can fry your gear.

ART PRO VLA II owner here; 12AU7's provide way too low gain for these units. When you crank it up to +5db to match input and output levels, it starts getting tube saturation a lot. Original ones are Ruby branded 12AT7. I wonder what EHX 12AX7s do. Problem 2: I installed a matched-pair JJ 12AU7 and still had to play with trimpots to match levels. Found a good balance when I make one of them maxed out, another one near to minimum. When you match them when stereo-link enabled, be prepare to be shocked when you disengage it. It lose the balance again. Problem 3: You think you balanced them at last? When you start compressing, despite the exact same settings, two channels apply noticably different gain reduction and lose the equal level again. Problem 4: Not hearing enough levels on outputs, the red peak leds lighting up very often, yellows are on -3db, not even a halfway of headroom. Solution: That's how 12AU7's work in VLA II. Never stereo link the device. Just use 12AT7s. Matched pair is not needed! Not even take you anywhere. You still have to struggle with trimpots.

Those VTL5C1 are quite fast. About 35ms to switch off. So they are often used for channel switching in amps. And some other VTL5C* are more like 500ms :( But maybe it's Ok for compressors. I tried to use white LED and photoresistor but it was also too slow for switching off. I'll try other colors then. Thanks for a hint :)

I got one of these units and could not get it to stop buzzing. I tried everything, so I sent it back believing it was defective and ordered another one. Guess what...same problem! This cannot be an isolated case. Either way I popped for a Warm Audio unit instead...and guess what...NO NOISE! Thanks for wasting my time ART!
