I love the muted colors of this painting. Age just enhances it. The repair process is easy enough. You've added 50 years at least to this lady's legacy.

Really enjoyed this and what a great job. I'm an artist, who all ways paints large canvas 4'x7' and I've torn lots of painting. They are oil on linen with rabbit skin glue base. I always use more rabbit skin glue to attach the patch from the back. But really I like your idea and will try it next time (I move, that's when these things happen. I love it, so great to not disguard old lovely works.

GREAT JOB! I think I would paint the repair strips the background color of the painting before I glued the piece in place. I’d be just a bit ahead. Also, instead of hanging free I’d hang like the textile curator at our museum suggested: stretch canvas on wooden stretcher size of piece to be hung. Then either STITCH your piece ALL THE WAY AROUND to the canvas or wrap fabric around frame and staple on back. The point if to attach art to frame ALL THE WAY AROUND so the weight is supported and there will be no more breakage due to weight. This technique is used for hanging valuable quilts with stitches running diagonally as well so there is no sagging. Go diagonally about 6 times…more if quilt is extremely heavy.

The weave structure looks like rep weave where the weft is 4 times larger than the warp, giving a ribbed effect. I’m assuming this is cotton thread. Very interesting!

I love, love that you do this kind of work and show us how to do it too. You are so talented! Did I miss it...what kind of paint did they use originally for the image?

You know how you seem to always splash bleach on your favorite shirt? Never your worn out trashy tee shirt that you just keep for mowing the lawn etc. I use permanent sharpies to camouflage those spots. I dot in the bleached area, using multiple colors if needed to match the original color. For instance, if the color is a light blue green, I may need to mix light blue dots with light green dots, and possibly even a little yellow. They key is “tiny dots”. Never large dots or a solid line stroke. I can’t tell you how many pieces of clothing I’ve saved using this technique. And if it fades after some washes, just redo!

The fabric reminds me of corduroy. Those pants were the worst lol, they always stretched out :)

Love that you saved her. Question: at the time of this work, and the fact that she has no frame of which to hang, would you avoid more tearing by backing the entire piece with the new canvas? Then it would carry the weight better. What’s your thoughts?

@@OurRestorationNation Well, YOU SCORED! Did you see my post on how the textile curator att the Witte Museum here suggested I hang old canvases? Quilts? Needlework? I collect old needlepoint. Most I found is framed and therefore supported but some are loose canvasses.
