@@kate2352 A butler’s pantry is where the fine china/porcelain dishware was washed and stored. Silver items such as cutlery and trays were polished here. It was also used as a staging area where all the food would be checked twice before serving to the family and guests if any. Possibly glassware was stored here also. Wines would be opened here. Think of it as a place where everything was deemed perfect before being served.

our butler's pantry has a pass-through cabinet to the dining room. Instead of having to open the door to take food out, I guess the maid could hand the food when it was ready through the little pass through door to the dining room. we have a call bell also under the kitchen table that the people could step on to call the kitchen to say to bring the food out

@@deannanewton3144 That’s fascinating about the little bell push on the floor. First time I’ve heard of this. I grew up in a 1950s very basic house: 3 BR 1 BATH so I love to see and to read about how other people live, now and long ago. I used to visit relatives in a Craftsman bungalow in the city as a child so I love the Craftsman style but there are so many beautiful houses.

Barbara Bell I know you’re right. By using the audio on the camera and no off camera mic we definitely have sound issues. I clean it up as much as I can but we may look into other options.
@gopherfan118
@gopherfan118 4 жыл бұрын
@@OurRestorationNation I work with EQ soundboards a lot and when editing sound especially with echoes you're essentially taking away most of their original voice. Since it's the same frequency range in the echo it affecting the original audio source also. When there is feedback there isn't really much you can do to improve it without taking away the quality of the sound. It's somewhat better to leave it unedited as it won't affect the original voice and muddy it up. It's extremely difficult to edit out in post as that is affecting the voice itself when it isn't the voice it's the echo that seems to be the issue. It takes some work but how I would go about it is by wearing a LAV microphone or something that could plug into the headphone jack of a phone and use a voice recording app there. Another option would be to try to funnel the sound that bounces off the walls away from the microphone, I could see this being achieved with something as simple as a cup around the microphone, something that would be similar to a monodirectional microphone so that way it will only pick up sound that is directly in front of the microphone. A plastic cup could do the trick as a cheap fix, but I would experiment around with trying to create a way that that extra sound that bounces off the walls won't reach the microphone. A more expensive option would be to use a shotgun microphone or a lavaliere microphone for getting that one source of sound. I'm just giving you a could options to try to help. I'm loving the videos and I hope you're able to find a fix soon. If an external microphone isn't possible I would not try to cancel out the echo in the room and leave the recording as is since it does effect the voice quality. I look forward to seeing more videos from you all.

I’m a woman in Michigan. I demolished a two story house 30 years ago. I ripped down plaster and lath in every room. Had wiring replaced as it was tube and spool. Insulated dry walled. New roof. Jacked up the house as floor was tilted in one room. Took me almost two years. Had to tear down walls upstairs and downstairs. Complete overhaul in bathroom. I’ve had the experience and will NEVER do it again lol. Very very hard work.

I can't speak for Louise bc idk...but most houses with dropped ceilings, horrid covered over fireplaces....was due to trying to save on heating/ cooling... I cringe whenever I see either. It takes so much away from the original beauty of these old homes.
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 4 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say what shape the plaster was in when the drop ceilings were put in but there are several reasons that they would have done it. Damaged plaster that they didn’t want to repair, less area to heat and cool but also many ceilings were lowered in the 50s and 60s because high, decorative ceilings were no longer in vogue.

UNBELIEVABLE progress!!! My 2cents about the kitchen chimney: get rid of it! Instead, use that as a "run" for a commercial ventilation system over a commercial range (may be required for a commercial application). Such an awesome kitchen! The space so lends itself to designated function areas (e.g. prep, cooking, clean up).

If they need all systems roof, electrical, plumbing, and foundation you’re looking at as much as 200k. Depending on the size of home and how much work you do yourself. We have usually tackled homes that require 120k to 175k that’s why we have to buy them cheap.

I know this is very very much after the fact of Louise’s life, but I have just now found your channel. Let me begin by saying I cried a lot when you lost Louise, maybe because my middle name is Louise, who knows. It broke my heart. But in watching the videos about her I have a few questions, if you would be willing to to answer. I was an adult before either of you were born and have a deep love for older homes. The home I grew up in, which I still own but don’t live in, was a farm house built in 1897. The farm is up for sale but I am salvaging some doors and windows to put in my mother in laws quarters in the near future. Now, my questions…would you comment on the wood trim of the windows and doors, they look as if the had their own swag at the top. And do you know the square footage of her originally? The two of you are so adorable. I love watching your videos.
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry but I’m not sure what you mean by swag? The trim on the windows and doors has no additional adornment if that’s what you mean? The house was 5500 square feet .
@sharynalbertson6264
@sharynalbertson6264 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I don’t know how to describe what I mean. The tops of the door and window frames were not straight up and down on the outside edge. From the glimpses I got it looked like the upper outside edges down from the top a few inches were longer by a fraction of an inch than the more interior wood next to it with three or four consecutive pieces toward the inside of the frame each being a fraction of an inch shorter. It gave the effect of a curtain valance that “cascades” or swags down.
@sharynalbertson6264

On your video touring Louise’s downstairs, at time stamp 57-60 seconds the closet door to Laine’s left it is visible. And it may be that this effect is mostly on the doors.
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh yes. That window trimming is very common in Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate design. All of those design styles overlap each other run successively. It’s not a “common”’design, but is one we see in homes of those periods (1850-1870)
@sharynalbertson6264
@sharynalbertson6264 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It is beautiful and I love the effect. I had never seen it before but then I've not seen inside a huge number of older homes before. Your instructional videos on things like cleaning old hardware and dealing with lead based paint have been so helpful as my farm house has much of both. The window glass in the large weighted windows is original too. Theres a special feeling looking through glass that isn't perfect and at times seems to be wavy. The farm is being bought up by the state to build an interstate highway and we have only a few months to salvage what we want, and dismantle a massive 120 yr old barn to keep some of the timber from it. We are finding Indian arrowheads, small cannon balls and bits of pottery buried under the barn floors, we didn't know was there. Then there's relocating it all to another state. Big job!! Especially for an older person like myself who doesnt know what she's doing.🤪 Thank you again for the information. I love your show. God bless you both.
