Didn't seem like a ton of negatives to knock off 3 points for each person! To be fair I wasn't expecting people to match my 10/10! :P But legit I couldn't find many flaws with the game and the flaws I did have were minor niggles. But I think I side more with Mike's arguments particularly his disagreements with some of the suggestions being made by others. However Tom nailed one comment at the end " a lot of minor stuff that some won't care about" - for me the minor stuff here, doesn't matter at all, if barely. - "bigger is better" is a Eurogamer misconception, not a flaw of the game, paintings are useful at all sizes particularly with the effect it has on prestige scoring. - prestige scoring is not down to the last draw, it's built up over the course of the game and you'll likely have a decent spread of the markers. But sometimes you get a surprise return near the end and you have to think "uh oh, green is sneaking up, I don't want that" and factor that into your choices in the endgame. It makes the prestige ratings dynamic and unpredictable to an extent, but not random coin toss equivalent or rolling a die to see which wins - random draw would kill this game, you HAVE to have the pick and choose size draw system. As Mike says it allows for that element of interaction where you can see what sizes other players want and choose what they can't fit easily. And my decisions for how to place tiles would feel less important if I knew that the selection was totally random. Bear in mind you can also predict what others will choose based on their board. If I can see that you are looking for a thin long piece, I can factor that knowledge in. Also it's the same system that Castles of Mad King Ludwig has which Tom adores and I'd argue that the AP potential is FAR greater in that game, I've had turns go on endlessly waiting for the Master Builder. . . here I've never noticed the turns drag on from waiting for the person to choose. - deducing the exact spacing of a tile on the board is legit, but one of those minor things I got over pretty quickly. - Zee's staged scoring idea.........actually that's pretty good.........I could see that working. I like how it scores for prestige currently but I'd be down for that as a variant from an expansion. - frames/types can be a little random on the draw, that was a flaw I mentioned, but it adds a tactical response to what you see and the game is light and short enough that it doesn't bother me as much as it would in say a longer mid weight Euro. - games do not last 17+ turns, someone will have their board done in 10-13 typically. - Patchwork scoring wouldn't work because it would just make the bigger paintings 10x more desirable to the point where no-one takes smaller paintings. If you make empty spaces that detrimental, then no-one would want small paintings until the very end. - I don't think the game needs goals or player powers, it's a light game, it doesn't need to be more complicated and you may have goals that just don't work out for players by the end based on what gets drawn. I think you're better off with something like Zee's staged scoring idea. Some interesting discussions - but Art Society has probably been one of the more played games since Essen so far. Quick, simple, scales well, easy setup and dynamic interactions, no duds yet.

I could definitely see an expansion making this an awesome game. Characters with different preferences (Add or subtract 1x from a colour/frame) or powers (look at tiles, move tiles, store an extra tile, modify a bid, etc). And mid game scoring that is either timed, or player run (1 paddle has a score marker on it, or a 0 value that triggers the score). And spoiler tiles with a colour there just to force other tiles to move around differently (Like maybe a white "modern art" tile, always worth 1 but gets no score modifier). I would certainly wait for an expansion on this one.

I agree that it would be better to have a system where you get a -1 for each empty patch. Is there a reason to *not* house rule that in? The perks of a board game (as opposed to a video game) is that you can rebalance things without the developer's aid
