Oh! I loved every second of this! When I got my floor loom my intention was to weave pieces like this and, now, I'll know how. I am getting a rigid heddle for traveling in our trailer. I became homesick for my loom and am in hopes this will help appease me in the weeks away from home. Thank you. Your scarf is exceptionally beautiful.

Hi Gene, just ordered a rigid heddle loom and after watching your video I am very excited to try out your techniques. Thank you so much for a very informative video and can only hope that one day I can create something as beautiful as you have. Never have tried weaving and I know this will be a fantastic adventure. Thanks again.
@GeneBlack7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Loretta. I hope you don't get discouraged when you first warp your loom. It can seem a little bit intimidating at first. Hang in there and keep going. Don't be afraid to ask for help (or find a class to take) if you need it. I would suggest starting with a simple plain weave - just back and forth - to get the hang of it. You can change the yarn on your shuttle to a different yarn as you go to make it more interesting. Then gradually add other techniques. I hope you love weaving as much as I do.

What a beautiful work of art, thank you for showing me how versatile weaving can be. It is truly only limited by your imagination. I can't wait to try the technique of adding different types of fiber to what is woven. You are a true artist and I look forward to creating my own, one of a kind, work of art. Something I only dreamed about doing since my view of art was limited to painting or drawing both I have zero talent for. With this one video, you have opened up my world to a whole new way of being artistic and creative. More amazing still, it is something that is tactile and can be experienced with not only your eyes but through touch. Used even, that is a true gift. Thank you so very much, for sharing this artistic gift with everyone.

Thanks Robin. Weaving is very versatile. Each technique I learn just adds to my artist's palette.

Don't be intimidated. Everyone has to start somewhere. Try it, make a few mistakes and learn from them. Before you know it, you will get much better at weaving.

Yes, I think I will have one of those in my not too distant future, I really like them! I was wondering how did you lay out your wefts in the inkle loom strap, red and white cotton, a video would be great if you can fit one in....? thanks
@GeneBlack7 жыл бұрын
there were 24 threads total. Eight white and sixteen red. Four red on each side, Alternate red and white - putting one color in heddles for 8 threads. Duplicate the color of the last thread, but switch colors for the heddled threads for the next eight. Finish with all red for the four.

Kellyanne Cook - I don't have a reply button for your comment. (I have no idea why.) The pieces can be framed, however, I cut this piece up and made a vest to wear. you can see it here : blog.geneblack.com/2014/03/sewing-it-up.html
@kellyannecook189510 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gene. Did you felt the piece before cutting it? Like the commenters on the blog I would be afraid to cut a piece. My daughter has been busy making scarves to sell at a church boutique, but we definitely are going to try an art piece after those are done.
@GeneBlack10 жыл бұрын
Kellyanne Cook I did not felt it before I cut it. At that time I didn't wash my fabric first. I do wash my fabrics first now although I avoid felting it. I just boldly cut this. (I am amazed it held together so well.) Since then I learned to sew on each side of the line you are going to cut with a simple straight stitch. Then cut between the two lines. The lines of stitching secure the woven edges nicely. Remember almost all fabric is woven and when you cut it, it may fray but it doesn't fall apart.

I am new to weaving and am awaiting the arrival of my Schacht school loom. Lovely technique! I am just getting ready to order a Kromski Harp, but I can't decide which size to get. I'm leaning toward the 24" because I think it will fit in my lap better. What size are you using in this video?
@GeneBlack10 жыл бұрын
In this video, I am using a 24". Personally I find it a bit large for weaving very long periods of time. I have a Schacht Cricket 15" that I really like for rigid heddle weaving. The Kromski harp also comes in a 16" size. If I got another Kromski I would see that it has the metal pawls for better maintaining the tension.
