A suggestion, Art: wear a Tyvek suit while gutting the house to ensure protection against the spores getting into clothing, etc. . My experience with disaster relief house mucking tells me that even your studs need treatment or replacement. It’s pretty intense and time-consuming. A group called Cajun Army (Louisiana) does amazing mucking work after floods/hurricanes. Maybe they can help with some great advice. They’re amazing, amazing, experienced volunteers. Good luck and stay safe!!!

I mean, this knowledge is good to have, but this isn't a disaster relief situation. Once the walls are torn out, you'll benefit from an inspection but I don't think studs need to be replaced if you're willing to put in the man hours to treat them. Just keep that house as dry as you can this winter, and don't seal anything until you've treated and have warm/dry conditions. Still, the outer layer is worth considering. Don't bring that mold into the rental

I noticed when art was down in the basement/cellar awhile back all the windows that old timers would have opened and closed for air flow/ventilation had been sealed off/boarded over. Ventilation is so important...old timers knew it, too. Need to reopen those based on the season to help get proper air flow. It will do wonders to help prevent the situation from repeating once you get everything back together again. 💜💙💚

We did this to our house and the mold spores die off, as for the wet wall i imagen the roofing maybe leaking, but ventilation is important in least sun space, the whole house probably doesn't need to be stripped only the back end. but looking at the walls i cant see ventilation at all.

Take it from experience, you have no vapor barrier, no insulation and the vapor barrier has to be on the outside structure before siding and cladding.. the least expensive way to do this is knock it down to just studded walls and start over...it will take forever this time of year to dry it out. This time do it right. and start fresh.. Starting with the roof, and work down from there.. doing it right replacing it without sealing it from the roof down is a mistake..
@clarekrishan15974 жыл бұрын
and from what I can see on this clip your exterior siding has no separation gap to the grade the clapboards touch the grassed over areas in your yard ie the earth, the main moisture source, wicking up into the walls above? PA code requires 6" up from the ground (we just resided the homes in our HOA and were irked to see newly installed siding erroneously installed was depressing... since the project was required because original stucco was failing)

Yes and there doesn't seem to be any method of ventilation, passive or mechanical. No wonder people get ill. I'd suggest looking at MVHR installation in the rebuild. (that is:. Art & Bri........ I know that I said this right at the beginning when you first discovered the mould and were considering what to do about it, but I really do have to say it again, despite many here accusing those who give advice in love through experience as being somehow 'negative' because it's been arbitrarily decided that it comes under 'not having anything nice to say'? .......... How do you therefore suggest that we protect you all? Because 'keeping quiet' so as to not seem 'negative' in any way, when we KNOW that doing the wrong thing and that it cannot succeed is bound to hurt you and the family more in the future! We speak out of care and love for you all......... As somebody who at nearly 70 years old has spent decades in the construction industry - mostly in Europe - though also in the USA, Canada, Australia, etc., I know that no matter what you do to an old house with mould in the very fabric of the building, you will not get it all and even if you could, because it's now integrated into those materials, it will surface again at the very first opportunity in the future. That's why The Word of God says that homes with mould should be burnt to the ground! It will be faster, easier and ultimately safer to knock it all down and start again using 21st century materials, NOT more wood wherever you can avoid it! Light gauge steel frame and mould resistant board such as MgO board etc., will give you a damp and mould proofed house and a fire resistant house. The cost of the materials for a new house of the sort I describe will be well within the cost raised already. I just find it staggering that here we are in 'Buck Rogers' 21st century and yet people still insist on utilising thousand year old technology and materials for houses. Anyway, in love I've said my piece this one time and respect that the decision is 100% yours....... Wishing you and your beautiful family all the very best in whatever you decide to do.

Hello Art & Bri and family, greetings from Tasmania. I don't want to stick my nose into your business, but as a 68 year old carpenter/joiner who has tackled similar Reno's as you have ahead of you I am hoping you have considered all the implications of this task. There will be. Huge cost in both money and time, way more than you estimate. This will take you away from farming your land and interfere with family time as well. As well you will need to put time into your new fermenting venture. Some times we want to do it all ourselves, don't I know this, but in hind site it would have been best to get help or consider alternatives. Have you considered demolishing the house and trucking in a new pre built one. It bothers me that if some of these mould spores evade you they may re_appear in the new Reno. There will also be an increased chance of you injuring yourself on the job, God forbid. A pre built will see you in a new home much sooner as you already have water, power and sewage in place. Also I believe many of your followers/fans would prefer to see you go this route, and should you have a short fall in money may be only too happy to help out further. Hope I haven't offended you with my comments but I know how we can wear ourselves out by taking on too much. Anyway consider the options prayerfully and follow the Lord's leading. God Bless All of you.

Tony, I so agree with you. I understand how hard it must be for Art and Bri to consider tearing everything down and starting from scratch but when it comes to health sometimes we have to do what we have to do!. A nice double wide or even a shed to house where they could refinish the inside themselves might work. If that wasn't going to give them the space they need then maybe consider joining two sheds together and going from there. Nice new start and able to sleep at night not wondering if any of the kids were getting sick. Sorry everyone, I didn't mean for this to sound like a put down but it is going to be such a long job doing it this way and no guarantees at the end. Forgive me for interfering, Love to everyone and stay safe.

Art it is good that you can clean up as you go. It will help out when you start putting things back together.

Art you are doing great on the demo. It's great to see the progress/ accomplishment of each day. Keep the motivation going, try for a room a day if you can. And you'll be done so quickly. Stay healthy 🌷

Art take the whole lot down and rebuild, a little advice get that boiler out of the basement it maybe some of the cause of the mold as the moisture rises through the walls adding to the mold it travels

The condensation is a ventilation issue. Will need to redo that from the roof down.

You guys need to have documentation of a plan that works together to get back into the house safely. I would be afraid to move into the house without professional remediation.

Pouring a concrete slab and putting up a pole building and slowly putting in partitions would give your large family a lot of space and it would be safe and a lot faster. 🥰

Hi Art, Glad to see you got started. On the wet wall. I reall could not see how far up the wet wall was but here are a few ideas. If the dampness was lower than 4Ft. and in one corner, I would look for wicking from the ground source of water, even from a roof down spout. If the wall is damp uniforn from top to bottom then definitely condensation. This why building wrap and vapor barrier with good insulation is so important. And believe is or mid summer and mid winter is when condensation between wall form the most. Thing of it has a weather system, when a cold fron colides with a warm front, we end up with rain. That's what happening between the walls with the summer exterior heated walls meets the air condition interior wall. In the winter, it's the opposite. You have your heated warn interior wall meeting the cold exterior wall in winter's elements. So house wrap, good insulation and vapor barrier will prevent a healthy inviornment for mole. Great job in getting started, work safe and carry on!

You guys have a long messy road ahead of yourselves but once it's all said and done, you can sit back, enjoy your new renovated home and be a whole family again with no worries over your heads. I love watching people who renovate their homes so hope to see more of it with longer videos. God Bless y'all! 🥰🤗

It was so awesome watching you work on your 🏡 home, that's a lot of mold, Just listening to how happy you felt working on the walls was great!😊👍💕💕💕

With the complete tear down, you will know all the issues and you will be able to make sure the outside gets the vapor wrap and insulation in the walls, same with wiring and the like. It seams like a monster but you are getting it done one step at a time. Great JOB....and just like the bulbs you put in the ground...the winter must come and go before you get the beauty in the spring. Keep your eye on the prize and have faith in each other. Hugs and best wishes to you all. Thanks for posting.

Crying right with you. This has been a year for many of us. God's grace is definitely enough! There is an old hymn called O love that Wilt not let me go. One of the lines says I trace the rainbow through the rain and feel the promise is not vain that mourn shall tearless be.

Thank you for talking about mold sickness Bri! It is real! I was diagnosed 6 months ago with it and we are still trying to figure if we've gotten all the mold-while living in our house. I'm desperate to get better and it feels like it is taking forever. Thank you for sharing! 💖
