Bri, given the age of the house the beadboard is likely painted with lead paint. You can get the look with new stuff more safely. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

If it's something you can't live without, get new beadboard to install. The time and energy you save will justify the cost without even considering the hazard of working with mold and lead paint on the old ones.

Impressive job Art. You are absolutely right about bead board. Now maybe that 4x8 sheet bead board would work and it is inexpensive, easy to clean or paint. Keep up the hard work on that house. So cool you have a friend to listen to your issues.

This year I received the blessing of a cutting from my grandmother's fig tree at her house her fig tree was a very old cutting and potentially the Fig cutting that I've got comes from a line of figs in our family that's over a several hundred years old. I am super excited the fig tree has grown to about 3 ft this summer so hopefully I will get to taste some of my grandmother's wonderful heirloom figs! :-) :-) :-)

When I was rewiring my house I found a couple places where the previous owner cut the plastic coating on wires hooked another wire around that spot. Then put some tarry looking stuff around the bare wire put a plug in on new wire called it good. No junction box or connectors. Another place they had put a nail through, and to fix it put a plastic wire connector for a car on it. That was in the fifties. 2010 is when I rewired my house. I feel much safer now.

True, but there is a non toxic thick paint remover that encapsulates the lead paint & with a scraper, it comes right off. It is a legal way to remove it, & avoids the dust caused by sanding by hand or power sander, & then scraping out the grooves.

@@vickiburt2676 TY, Vicki. I did enter it 1st as a stand alone , " Attn: Bri -" etc, It's longer & a bit rambling, lol. I know a couple who had the bucks to hire professionals to delead their entire big, colonial in Massachusetts. At the time, 35 years ago or so, they were charged about $30K. They came in with all kinds of equipment, dressed in hazmat suits, while my friends, who were expecting a 3rd child, took their 2 small kids & relocated for a while. The crew were working on it for weeks, & of course, it was expected that they would be meticulous about removing all the dust produced from their sanding. Apparently they should've hired someone to clean up after those guys. Their pediatrician had noticed lead levels in their tests, which was why they decided to spare no expense for the wellbeing of their children to have a team of professionals do the job. After they'd returned home, the kid's lead levels had become much higher.

Tear the roof and reframe it, you will have to do that sooner rather then later since you might have a leak that is causing some of the water. You guys are putting a lot of effort and lets be honest doing that later will just mean more work than doing it now. It will be more cost effective even if that means maybe needing a loan. If you can gut the whole house to the frame on your own, get a team to do the mold treatment on the studs and ground, then you can get friends and family to redo the house and it will go faster. Once the roof is new and you have new siding because its needs to go and changed with something that is more breathable you guys are set and can start the work inside. You should look into paint that lets the walls breath both for the inside and outside. For inside you can use paint that is specifically to absorb bad stuff from the air. >Ideally getting the roof and exterior done before the wet season starts
@robwestley7370
@robwestley7370 4 жыл бұрын
If the walls are insulated between the inside and outside there will not be so much condensation as warm air or heat hits the cold from outside. The fact that all the basement was sealed especially the windows sealed with plastic again there’s no free flow of air to keep damp at bay.

Sorry Bri I have to side with Arthur on this one! I too was enamored with bead board and thought it was the PERFECT fit for my dream farmhouse (which was oddly much like your little house) kitchen & dining area. I used it on the walls AND the ceiling....what a huge mistake! Don't get me wrong, I adored the look and even didn't mind the extra work to keep it clean for the first year, maybe even two years, but I eventually had to admit I made a bad choice! Nobody could have convinced me at the time...I had a plan! I painted it with a heavy duty high gloss paint for wooden boats and was absolutely certain that was going to ensure MY SUCCESS where others failed. AND I had a few other tricks up my sleeve like a vacuum attachment for dusting those cracks & a dedicated mop just for my walls/ceilings. Bead board is not a good fit for a working kitchen.

Not many natural things anymore which did last a long time replaced with just man made stuff. Love the bead board too. hugs

The types of mold are the ones naturally around there at all times. It’s not a black mold or anything like that. The main issue is moisture. If they can fix the moisture issue and get rid of the mold damaged material, they’ll be ok. It’s the sogginess and lack of ventilation hat is their problem.

So he has done his research. Happy to see a positive comment :)

Arden Peters, I apologize for being a Debbie Downer right up front. As one whose entire health & quality of life has been so adversely affected by non-black molds - my worst of many allergens, I can't help but be very concerned about Art & Bri & their children. I'm a NC native & know the seasonal weather conditions there, including frequent high humidities compounded by heavy fogs & dew, thunder & tropical storms, snow & sleet, nor'easters. I heard Art mention a 'mudroom' which means there will be tracking in of work boots etc. That Does Not mean I expect them to be irresponsible, but we can't even see mold spores - & they're in the soil & on the flora & fauna there. The same kinds they're trying to destroy. I think none of that wood should be saved or re-used, not even burned. Like the beadboard Bri loves = Labor intensive & expensive to reclaim. BUT the molds' root systems spread DEEP into porous materials. There are many modern beadboard products available: paneling, feature walls, trim work, already finished, wood & other materials, pre-painted,, etc. My Grandparents on both sides my family, & extended family all across NC & SC, had beadboard in some of their rooms. Some smoked tobacco, had wood, kerosene, propane & natural gas, even black coal fireplaces & stoves. The walls & ceilings were covered with residue & stains from the fuels used. "Spring Cleaning" were long & laborious productions involving lots of family or paid workers. None of thought about all that gunk being breathed into our lungs. Moreso, if Art & Bro's research revealed that endemic molds like what's in the tight crawlspace are the ones that made them sick, no amount of remediation & grading will 100% eliminate or guard against reinfestation of any or all of the mold species. All it takes is one spore finding the right conditions. Or one leak inside a wall during a storm. I do hold them in my heart & pray that God will bless them beyond measure in all their endeavors. Especially in good health. My good health is gone, primarily from exposure to molds & 2nd hand smoke. I continue a struggle of 20+ years to regain it, or at least stop the steady decline.

Ha! Sounds like a good reason for a party. A beadboard cleaning party! (Even though I'm more of a "shiplap" kind of guy). Anyone in for it?

Starting from scratch, means toss it all out. Please do t take a chance. I'll donate to purchase some new bead-board just to keep you safe. With all these layers on the walls no wonder the mould spread, the moisture must have been locked between the the layers and never dried out. Stay safe, enjoy your winter rental. Nice to see the demo moving along.

I remember that hiding place. You shared it with us before. Reframing the roof sounds like a good idea. Don't forget rain gutters. Water from the roof splashes on the ground and through the siding and causes mold.

Our bead board was not salvagable...it was so brittle from being 100 years old that if it didn't split from removing it... it would split when we tried to use it again. We had 5 layers in our farmhouse.. bead board, cardboard, wallpaper, multiple paintings and 1970's paneling and no insulation!! Our framing of the walls and roof were solid..we removed the tin and wormy chestnut boards but the main trusses were solid. Watching you brings back good memories...I love demo!!!

Figs! Oh so yummies! Homeschool lesson on figs... If a female burrows into a female fig, she can't lay her eggs and dies of starvation. However, she does bring pollen into the internal flowers of the fig, pollinating it. ... So yes, there is at least one dead wasp inside the figs that we like to eat. Don't worry! Wondering what the kids would think of that!? My grandpa used to tell us that so we wouldn't eat all his figs! LOL 😆 I was the only grandchild out of 23 that didn't care and ate them anyway! Be blessed!
