you remind me so much of Ursula from Kiki‘s Delivery Service. Even drawing birds matches her haha ♥️ I‘ve been watching your videos all afternoon and evening and you inspire me immensely. Thank you so much

Practice must be accompanied by theory and vice versa. Read books on drawing and painting, watch educational videos and lessons. There is an opportunity: learn from a professional teacher. And, of course, daily practice. If you draw once or twice a week, you will progress very slowly. Draw as often as possible. At the same time, don't make your activities obligatory. Enjoy. And don't be afraid of failure.

Thanks for the tips! I think #3 is my current challenge...I've got lots I want to do, but not sure which will not only improve my art but move me forward in my personal/professional growth.

It's called a woodless pencil. There are many brands. Just to warn you, the pencil is coated with a plastic or resin layer on the outside. It keeps your hands clean, but you can't use the side to draw with like you can with charcoal.

Welp. 4 and 5 are probably me. I got pretty decent in just a few months, just fell away from it for years, and recently have been trying to remember here and there to draw. Not seeing that skill jump I had before. Stay on top of your passions. Don't let them fade away. Or rather, make time for your passions I guess.😗 Take care y'all. Liked your video by the way.👍😁

As a poetry writer I’d love my drawings to match what I write about, so not sure how to learn to express those emotions in both drawings and painting.

My daughter found, to her delight, that calligraphy pairs beautifully with poetry. The attention to detail in strokes means that her writing has to be pared down accordingly, and was stripped of unnecessary verbiage - akin to writing Haiku. Her watercolour technique has benefited enormously as well. It's a beautiful process. :)

I get frustrated when I practice because my pictures don’t turn out very well. So it deters me from practicing. It’s a vicious cycle.

Thank you so much for the video, Louise! It's so wonderful to see you practicing on your beloved corvids while sharing your thoughts. I am currently stretching my creative comfort zone by attending figure drawing sessions (I LOVE gesture drawing! Who knew?), and it's been really helpful for my watercolour painting as I'm exercising my observation skills. Also, I seem to be seeing the world around me in volumes, which is strange but exciting. Be well.

Oh yes, gesture drawing is such a thrill. Especially in the form of timed figure drawing practice. How I miss living in the city and going to those on a weekly basis... 😌

@@LouiseStigell Totally agree. Last night (for the first time) I sketched using watercolour instead of pencil, and that was particularly challenging. Because of the short time frames, you cannot adjust your painting all that much without creating back runs, and the longer poses really tempt you into that trap!

Wow spot on...I AM ALL OF THE ABOVE .....lols But, the main reason why I abandoned my skills is because, I can barely put food in my plate by relying on it for a living. There's barely enough time after work to actually practice and continue my art...maybe when I'm retired....

Such beautiful art! For me it’s lack of goals. I would like to know how to set them. Right now I just see an entire ocean of stuff I need to learn instead of a direction. I would very much like to know how you have set goals. Do you have some tips?

Can't find a better video to put this on: how do you keep those pencil sketches from getting completely blurred when you close your sketchbook? I like drawing with pencil more than pen, but all my old sketchbooks are full of meh pen drawings and many pages of blurred out gray blobs.
@LouiseStigell
@LouiseStigell 3 ай бұрын
It depends on what pencil you're using, and the quality of the paper. With this sketchbook, I do get a bit of smudging when I've closed the book. A lot, if I've used a softer pencil, or charcoal. I guess you could use fixative for that, but I can't be bothered. My sketchbook is for practicing. I usually take pics of the sketches I want to preserve, digitally. And if I want to protect a drawing, a draw on loose sheets. 😊

#3 is the one that most resonates with me. but I don't know how to acquire an objective or a destination. I've watched videos on that topic specifically and I still come up clueless. if you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. thanks so much for these inspiring words.

For me, what gives me a vision for where I want to go has always been other artists and creatives I look up to. I don't even know of I know any other way, to be honest. I wouldn't be able to come up with an artistic vision in a vacuum. It's by being blown away by what someone else has created that I can see what's possible, and get excited about learning things.

@@LouiseStigell thanks so much. this makes sense the way you say it. maybe I get caught thinking I have to come up with something truly original. but there is definitely work out there that inspires me.

There are two sources of creative material: your own experiences/knowledge and the work of other artists. The former tells you what to say while the latter mostly helps with how you can say it. If you only pull from other artists, your work will likely be derivative and lack sincerity.

My problem is I do few things at once. Few years ago it was very good practice despite having a very no planning skills and non existing routine but after 2 years of break, I lost most of my progress. And now it's hard trying to build it up together with the same method. *Sigh's in annoyance.* Why is my brain forgetting so easily?

It might help to draw out your current process step by step along with some notes; almost like making your own art book. Then you'd have something to reference when you come back later on.
