I'm not an artist, I'm a family therapist. I write blog posts on a blog page on my website and I do a monthly e-newsletter through Promote (similar to mailchimp) which email service offered through Weebly. But I would like to send out an email each time I do a blog post. Would you recommend Substack for my purposes or a different platform. My goal is to provide educational and inspirational posts for the general public as well as establish relationships with potential client referral sources.

Dear Louise, thank you for this thoughtful and beautiful video. Could you please share the information about the pencil you are using in this video? It looks interesting and convenient due to the big lead.

This nonstop onslaught of so many people putting videos on YT, of them showing off, talking about themselves, and displaying their "content", all in a cheesy and saccharine fictional vocalization.

I love your content! I'm a fellow artist living in Estonia and making woodcut prints. I'm also inspired by a slow lifestyle and make video's about my art and homestead journey here. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable insights, they are very relatable!

Thanks for this video. I understand the value in having an email newsletter, but I think I do struggle a lot with knowing what to put in it. For me the real challenge I think is that I'm an abstract digital artist, and I create my art intuitively, so there's generally not anything specific that inspired the work. It just flows out of me, and there's not really any story behind the piece. I could talk a little bit about the intuitive process, but it wouldn't vary much from piece to piece. I know there are other artists that create this way and that it's a completely valid way of creating art, but again, it does have the downside of making it hard to know what to say about any given piece other than "Here's a new piece I made and I really like how it turned out." I think I also sort of fall into that pattern designer category you were talking about. I aim to make my abstract art tileable so I can put it on a variety of print-on-demand products or digital products such as stationery or printable bookmarks, but each art piece is also meant to work on its own and could absolutely be sold as wall prints for those that like abstract art. For this reason, I do consider myself to be a digital fine artist. Perhaps, this means that I would need to lean a bit more heavily on sales in a newsletter than I'd prefer, letting people know about when new prints or other products are available for sale, but it would still be nice to be able to balance it out with other content a bit so it doesn't feel too spammy. Hopefully someday I can find other artists with newsletters that create the way I do so I can see some better examples of how to do things that might be relevant to me.

Great video, thank you for sharing your experience and logical reasons for moving to a different platform. When you left substack, were you able to export your email list and content?

I love seeing the process. I recently watched a documentary about the Japanese animator Miyazaki (whose films I am an avid fan of) and it charted his process through the development of his latest film The Boy and the Heron (which I had not seen yet). And also his relationships, history, life etc. When I watched it after the documentary, it was a very different experience. Understanding the artist’s process and thoughts adds a meaningful layer to the art - it’s like being attracted to someone only through their looks compared to knowing their mind as well as their looks. The latter is the more richer and meaningful experience.

I really like the idea of the soft sell through a personal connection by ´warming them up', i had never thought to show the process before the work was finished, i guess i need to learn to be ok with feeling vulnerable with un unfinished work, thankyou for such thoughtful videos, i am glad there is someone on youtube on my wavelength!

Very interesting thoughts on a newsletter. I'm a jewelry designer, but I work more in the artistic direction than like a true designer. In fact, my newsletters that tell about something personal are the ones with the greatest response. Not necessarily with the most sale. But this thought that there are many people who will fulfill a wish later gives me a lot of courage. ❤

How do you stop yourself from being overwhelmed by the need to make money and therefore being pulled in all directions. I feel like I've "chosen" the wrong art form - I love textile art but it's been difficult to create and also set time aside for marketing. Then when I do work on the marketing then my creativity drops. Would love to hear your thoughts.

You just validated a decision I made recently. I was going to start a Substack blog/vlog/podcast based on my investing journey, but after reflecting on this and going through a life event, I realised that outside of work, I should really only focus on 1 thing and dedicate myself to it - and that was not this thing that I was going to start. So now, I am removing this from my life and I am going to follow my passion, which I hope to continue doing even when I no longer have to work for money.
