I just started learning how to draw at 51... actually that's not true. I've finally committed to not giving up on drawing at 51. I decided that this time around it doesn't matter if I ever "learn how to draw". It doesn't matter if I ever get good or that I ever get something good enough to sell or even to hang on the wall. I'm drawing because I want to draw. Usually I hate the finished product, but that doesn't matter. I haven't committed to making a good end product; I've committed to making marks on paper every single day. I've committed to actually looking at something every single day, without judgment, and trying to understand it shape, texture, value and form, and trying to understand how I can express that in lines. It's totally been worth it.

‘’In a future where most of what we see is cheap manufactured junk … where quality art is in high demand but low supply … the artists who kept at it, kept building their ability to make quality art, are going to be highly valued and sought after.’’ This is what I’ve been feeling too! Learning art is about learning the self. I started with the clearest intentions of painting realism. And now, 8 years later, I have little interest in it. I find myself drawn to the swift, powerful dry brush with india ink pieces. I never would've known I fancy that. It's helped me realize that I do actually enjoy spontaneity as well as working a piece over time. We come to art to human.

i earn a living with my creative skills for over 35 years now. first as a indie game dev until the game biz totally changed. then with an award winning flash web agency - until flash tech went offline. now as an illustrator and animator - but more and more jobs are „co-designed“ by clients with ai generated assets. these people have never developed an eye for good proportions, colors or compositions. and now everyone that can type a prompt calls itself a creative. i am really thinking about turning my back against the art business and opening a coffeeshop… i am so tired…

Fine and contemporary art isn’t under threat. In most people’s mind the art and the artist are both part of one product they are interested in. People want art made by people. Commercial art (illustration, Graphic Design and Commercial Photography) on the other hand are in trouble. People don’t care where the art for an advertisement or a store display comes from. A good art director will be empowered to do the work of ten commercial artists. Only the top end of the commercial arts will be done by humans by the end of the decade. Decorative art will probably land somewhere in between these two things.

Couldn't agree more. And if you think about this, we're already been through this shift once with the industrial revolution. A lot of clothes, ceramics, furniture etc have been made by machines for ages now, but we still value hand crafted items the most. It will be the same for art :)

Creativity is part of the human spirit. It is not a commodity.Draw and paint what you love and share it with the world. Breathe in the pleasure of it and if you have to also work, so be it. I have found that if i love my subject and the process others often will like it too.

Humanity needs art and artists because art is an attempt to grapple with what it means to be human--what it means to be the human that you are. Which is both enough like the human that I am that we can communicate about our shared experiences, and unique enough that you can teach me something about the vast sweep of humanity. So, I'm right there with you. "AI" doesn't create art--AI renders pictures or pulls word choices out of a matrix. Art doesn't mean anything to an "AI" because it doesn't need to reach out and seek understanding or resonance with another like-minded creature. That's my 2 cents, anyway. By the way, I love beetles and spiders! Spider feet are so cool. If you run a search for macro photos of spider feet, they have these adorable little fuzzy feet that look like cat paws.

I needed this. I found myself sobbing this morning, wondering if it’s worth it. I got sober almost 5 years ago and spent most of my life wasting my time and abilities getting, well, wasted. For the past 4 years, I’ve immersed myself in art. I’ve had a few sales, but I’m struggling badly. BADLY. I’m trying to learn to be a better marketer but I fall short. I’m battling constant self-sabotage as well. Massive self doubt. Then add in this Ai madness and the “What’s the point?” Depression creeps in. I’m contemplating a full time job and that just makes me feel like absolute crap and even worse, like a failure. Caught between a rock and a hard place.

we all are in that place, feeling the rocks grind. Just meet them head on. Stand by your original dream and desire. It pays off. I found that self marketing is an exercise in self acceptance, figuring out what and who you are and knowing your worth. It can be deep work. I learned to approach it with the same mindset as I do art.

hi sweety, Just my thoughts. It was so affirmational and so ensuring to have someone say those words in to the camera. Keep going girl. Love the trajectory you're on. Making art teaches us the art of being alive, and all the beauty that we may find for ourselves we can share through what we make visible on the canvas. And just like you say, people crave that vibe, they crave that space you can get into, while making art. Its a glimpse of what life should be like, what it means to be human. And the darker it gets, the stronger that longing becomes. I feel the same way. Keep calm and keep at it. Sending you love

Yes! Learn! Creatives should feel unique and empowered. I listened to a video by Alan Moore the writer, talking about the magic and power that creatives have. I always try to think back to this, because I believe he is right. Basically, as the means of storytelling and world building, creatives have a power that regular folk don't. Our work can change minds, open others to possibilities they may never have conceived. I believe that AI technology, aimed at art and writing because they were low hanging fruit, and the data was there to access and essentially rip off. I really hope it wasn't done in an underhanded way, to take the wind from the voice of future creatives. As an artist who went from traditional, to digital, now I use digital to assist my traditional work, because I feel that my result is more valuable or more real. Great clip. Gonna have a re-listen while I paint ;)

I have thought about this, and in my mind it is probably the best time to learn as most will quit or not even start. People aren't going to want emotionless printed paintings on their walls. Authors are still going to seek unique, consistent artists to illustrate their books. Ideas are going to come that haven't been executed in a particular way that only a human will come up with. AI is easy, and that can suffice for some things. But most things require character, and only humans can bring that into play.

we are artists, we create something from seemingly nothing - we are world creators and the world we want doesnt have ai / capitalist interests at the center. what's behind AI is an extension of the extractive practices inherent in imperialism + capitalism its ok to feel sad and depressed about the way things are but we can channel that energy towards action and that action can look like so many different things, one of them what you're doing here. thanks

AI can be a creative tool like a hammer or a paintbrush. What it produces is like a faster more well put together internet search. Artists still search the internet for ideas and get insight. Or use the internet for commerce and connection. I agree with what you are saying though. Art is human.

I am an artist and a songwriter/musician and I just wanted to tell you that I learned a long time ago to NEVER compare myself to anyone. That’s always a letdown because you’re always going to feel bad after it, thinking someone’s better than you. The truth is no one can “do you” the way you can “do you”, ya know what I mean? This came at such a crucial time for me! What you said about making art for the experience, not just the end product. I just left a job that was sucking major life out of me. (Ironically, I worked at an arts school, that came to be run more and more like a business in order to compete with other schools. Often at the expense of the students' education.) Like many creative types, especially now that I'm in between jobs, I find myself struggling with fear - and big guilt - when it comes to committing more free time to art. "Why do this - isn't it kind of pointless? (unless I commodify it?)" "How is this making a difference in the world?" "Am I just wasting time?" "Shouldn't I try to find a higher-paying job, and only then do I deserve to spend time making art?" Biggest irony is I've been a lifelong musician, and made it my career. (Started when I was 4, and got two degrees...) It feels like I already used up my chance pursuing something "impractical" - and I ruined it by forcing it to be my source of income. Your video has given me a push to keep following that feeling of peace and deep - not superficial - accomplishment I get when I draw. And start not stopping.

I agree as long as there are human beings there will always be a need for human made art. From talking to people at markets and craft fairs, a lot of people don't really want AI art at least not as much as human made art for now. I could be wrong, but I suspect that AI art's value will be limited in some sectors and I think that it could even cause human made art to rise in value and be viewed as the gourmet burger to the cheap fast food burger of AI art. It might be different in corporations however if you are a creative looking to have a job in those sectors, that's where I see AI art's biggest impact because corporations will always look for the cheapest option if they could avoid paying humans to produce the art for them. I think that it will be interesting to find out what the public response will be to AI generated animation or comic books.
