Paul, I'm new to watercolors, and I arrived here through pen and ink. I use pretty much fountain pens exclusively for my inking. I ran into a gent who uses a semi-waterproof ink to get a nice wash around a line without eradicating it. He uses a water brush or brush pen for his pocket kit. I tried this and found it works fairly well, and I had to try it with actual watercolors. So I got a little Windsor & Newton pocket set and tried a little painting with just the small water brush. To my great surprise, it worked very well. I could mix colors, do washes, clean the brush, by squeezing the handle and pushing water into the bristles. Now the painting isn't fantastic. I used the wrong paper entirely, my Moleskine pocket sketchbook. Buckled everywhere! But I saw enough promise in it to start studying in earnest. And I have 4 sizes of water brush in my kit along with some nice squirrel brushes. I must have clicked the wrong item after that, because I wound up with a set of Windsor & Newton acrylic brushes instead of watercolor brushes, but I might fiddle with acrylics someday, so I just put them aside. The desk easel I got came with some acrylics, so they all went into a box together for another day. I might make do with the squirrel brushes I got for a time, and just add a couple extra, like a mop and maybe that rigger. Or I may try to find that set of sable brushes for watercolors that I _meant_ to click. Or I might check out yours.

Stumbling my way across your videos has been an absolute gamechanger for me. The information you have provided, from the right paper to use, the brushes to give the best effects and watercolour techniques to practice, and all free at that, is second to none and I think I have now watched most of the videos, and have spent many many hours during lockdown experimenting with colours and techniques that I never thought possible and guess what - have now begun to sell some of my work! Just wanted to thank you for giving me the boost I needed to enjoy painting in watercolour and the bravery to be experimental with colour................ thank you so much.

A great tutorial on brushes…thank you. I am a plein air painter. I love using Princeton brushes. I have also used several of Richeson’s Grey Matters rounds. I use one Richeson travel brush, a round (#6) when I paint outside, especially when sketching or doing a thumb nail sketch. Like you, I really use only the same few brushes as I am familiar enough with them that I know how to use them and what they can do.

Oh, I'm so happy to know that your brushes are synthetic! Thank you for that! As well as a lot of people from the comments, I'm vegan and do not use any animal products, but I find some synthetic brushes just amazing. I am very happy that manufacturers are making progress and quality synthetic brushes are available. My mother was a painter and at her times there were no other options than real fur brushes. So now, it's so great that we can make an ethical choice, have the same good quality,. and enjoy painting.

Agree! - Synthetic brushes can do most of what natural hair can do - and at a much cheaper price!!!
@gorway73 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice as usual Paul. I have been a traditionalist when it comes to brushes. I was spoilt as a teen, inheriting my grandfathers precious sable brushes that I had forbidden to touch as a child. They were a collection of well used but awesome WN and Diana Kolinski brushes. I remember about the time I was in college, trying the new Dalon brush from Daler Rowney, advertised to be "just like sable" and was not impressed at all. As I've got older, I have become more ethically conscious... and tighter of pocket! I love my Rosemary and Co. No.12 sable mix,(my current go to brush) but in the last few years there has been exciting breakthroughs in synthetic hair fibre. Some can even emulate the "belly" of natural hair, offering the holding capacity and the flow control missing in conventional tapered round synthetics. A few years ago, I would have argued blind that we were still a decade off something that would match the performance of sable but I'm wrong. There are a few real gems out there right now from the likes of Da Vinci and Escoda, they are not cheap by any means but the technology is out there now and will be more widely available as more people choose to avoid animal products.

Very helpful sir. I've picked up art 2 or 3 years ago for the first time since primary and picked up a few different brushes but with experience now I sought out some other opinions. Your content here is very helpful and good. One of my favorite brushes is a flat but angled brush. it has the same benefits as you mention with your 3/4 flat but because it has an angle I can also get some really fine detail with that tip. It's a sort of two for one brush and I can't paint without it (well, i could, but i prefer not to!)

Thanks again for a great video. I'm a haven't started painting, but finally pencil sketched your Blue Door not realizing you have it in your book!... I love watching... no materials yet, so this was timely... now I'll still watch, so I can be familiar with the art phrases. I really needed to watch these... fun and beautiful! From a grateful gramma in San Diego Cty. (California) Have a great week.!

Thx as usual! And my favored brushes are: -- Escoda Pearl, because they white tora has a lot of spring -- a number 8 round from a no name old set... i still have to find another brush that (regardless to quality and price) has the same belly and spring that i love

I use Escoda and I have one Rahail Quill brush that I use almost exclusively! It's a 3/0 which is similar to the Escoda 10. Mine are all synthetic :) I mostly paint small (8x10) florals, animals, abstract art.

I do mostly realistic portraits, and my absolutely go-to are the Da Vinci Spin Synthetics. I just love those!

Brilliant to take on such a mammoth subject and pare it back to the bare bones - or bristles! I have a plethora of brushes because over the last few years as I was following different tutors they all recommended different brushes, some very expensive and some not so much which I duly purchased! As a result of this I have a good overall selection of Black Velvet brushes which I love and I also sometimes use a Hake which was very cheap and is good for foliage or bushes. Chinese calligraphy brushes are also really inexpensive and the small ones work almost like a rigger as they have a great point and hold a lot of paint.

Sounds like you have a good selection - the Black Velvets in particular!
