Well, it took quite a while to get this one out… but it’s finally here! Hope you enjoy the video, and please do let me know what you think of it in the comments :)
Technical stuff:
- Sculpted using Chavant NSP Medium and Hard clays
- The sculpt took about 28 sessions to finish.
- Armatures are made of aluminum wires, except for Raijin’s leg which has steel reinforcements.
- The peg holding up Raijin’s leg is made of wood, surrounded by epoxy putty.
- The sculpture stands roughly 21” tall counting the base, and about 12”x12” wide/deep
- It took about six sessions to get Thor’s upper body right… or as right as I was willing to take it anyway
- Raijin’s body went much faster, though his pants also took several sessions.
- This is the first time I’ve sculpted a real base, and I’m quite happy with the result, even though it came out of a giant fail.

@@PekoXXL Hey Peko, as far as I know, Plasticine, Plastiline, Plastilina, basically most oil-based clays are quite similar with some variation in firmness, smoothness, elasticity, etc. I think what matters most isn't the brand but rather just to find one you can easily buy, and that is economical for you. I happen to use Chavant NSP because I can easily find some in my area (Los Angeles) and I prefer it after trying a few brands. Unless you take a class, you'll probably have to be prepared to experiment a bit to find what works best for you. There's a learning curve with every medium so don't give up too soon if you can't quite control the clay at the start. My first sculptures are basically blobs compared to what I can do now :) As for painting... just paint! I can't speak for Garuda and I don't know if he has any special preparations he makes.. but as I understand it, acrylic paint will stick to oil-based clay just fine. The only thing you have to be aware of is that oil-based clays never truly harden, so you will have to handle them with some care, especially if you plan on transporting them at some point in the future. Hope this helps, and if you do decide to start sculpting, please feel free to share/tag me on IG!

@@ArtChongExtra wow.... dr garuda is here on this channel. I think nsp chavant is more difficult to shape because of the sticky texture on the carving tool while dr garuda uses a material that has more wax layers so it doesn't stick to the tool when used. very happy to see your video and dr garuda....

In my opinion this isn't to long, because it is not only the sculpting and the epic reveal but also the struggel that you as an Artist go through and the evolution the sculpture does take with it. In most points i did think that it was awesome sculpture but then you say "no this doesn't work for me" and than it keeps getting better and better until it is epic. It is also interesting how the dynamic from the sculpture changes through the video. Because of all this it is so fun to watch your videos because you have a very good idea (that is just epic and no one has done before as an sculpture) and it gets better and better through the video and let you watch it to the and without skipping parts (because there are no borring parts) and make you feel wholesome after watching it. And because you know the process this sculpture was going through, makes you respect the endresult even more All in all it is an video with a solid idea, much struggling and trying out and than the reveal of the finished sculpture and this is just very cool to watch. (I'm very sorry for my bad english but I hope it is understandable)

Thank YOU for watching, Rod. I’m glad you got something out of it, though my aim isn’t to teach, just share my own journey as an artist :) Btw don’t feel like you have to have hard grade for fine details. You can do quite a lot with Medium. In fact, if you’re not used to Chavant, you’re probably better off sticking with medium for a while, because it will help you learn how to control the material better. Trying to combine hard and medium clays to start can be quite disruptive to the process. When you make some sculptures please feel free to tag me on Instagram. Would love to see what you come up with!

god abt the softness of clay...i work with polymer clay but i haven't really found the exact clay that hits the right hardness for me. (well i did, but they stopped making it, f in chat for fimo poppen...will have to switch to epoxy sculpt eventually) but yeah, if i like something i'll end up baking it so i don't lose it, since i'm about as clumsy as you are, and i can never get it back the way i want it and end up overworking it LOL also yeah, i totally hit moments where i think it looks great, i bake it, i leave it for a few days, come back, and OUGH i hate it! then when i try to sand stuff off or carve it off, sometimes i lose parts i like, and yikes. disaster. even when its still soft the clay can stretch the wrong way, ruin what I've worked on! and i've only really done busts so far, watching your giant backgrounds is just...pain 😬 but it turns out great in the end, i love how much work goes into the composition!! this was such a cool idea, too. can't wait for next time!

Great video! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that changes the pose 10 times during a sculpt. Any tips on sculpting open hands?
@ArtChongArt
@ArtChongArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For hands... I don't have any real tips unfortunately. I've never had a very difficult time with them. I think it's because hands tend to not have a lot of muscle and once you get the bones down you're most of the way there. So I guess if there's a tip there's that. Pay attention to the mechanics of the hand, the sizes of the various palm bones and how they are usually at least a little concave. Hands are more dimensional than most drawing tutorials make it appear, I think.

How does Chavant medium hold up after it's finished compared to hard? I'm a beginner so pretty much everything I make ends up looking like a lumpy ball (maybe my clay is broken?) so I was thinking about picking up some Chavant or Monster clay as it can just be melted and reused. However if by some miracle I accidentally make something that vaguely resembles what I intended It'd be cool if it'll hold up well enough to keep around. Awesome video again btw 👍
@ArtChongArt
@ArtChongArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks At! NSP Medium holds up just fine over time. It will oxidize and the surface will become tougher and less tacky, but it will never truly harden. Even sculptures I made a year ago is still fine as long as they're properly balanced/supported. It's possible that your clay has partially oxidized and hardened into lumps. It's happened to me a few times if I leave unused clay in the open air too long, but it's generally fine if I heat them up again. Hope that helps and happy sculpting!

So I came during your very first upload and man your literally living my dream!! I want to do this SO F*$!#ING BAD! I can feel it down to my core!! Now when I clicked on your picture to take me to your profile and saw that I was watching your very first upload and now to be watching your second was a super humbling experience for me! JUST, because someone as talented as you are I just genuinely expected to already be this famous amazing sculptor with all these fans and all this glory and your simply not that at all (which is not bad AT ALL) because i know your skill alone will grow your page immensely!! But its just reassuring for my own self because ya im a very talented artist I can draw and color anything right out of anyone's imagination and let it flow onto paper like it was suppose to always be there but ive always felt the need to do MORE you know? Take that a step further like off of my paper and this is what ive come to love as of last year. And so far art,( me humbly speaking) you are my absolute favorite person to watch and let be my biggest inspiration to becoming my own sculptor! I can't wait till I can make my own youtubes or whatever in the future and tell the entire world( or whoever cares to listen to my sorry ass lol ) how much you had inspired me to do big amazing things with my creative mind! DONT EVER CHANGE! I love every bit of both of your only videos up so far and I doubt your even going to read this man but its worth a shot? So I ask so so humbly through this outlet and maybe email or something? Would you please please please be a mentor to me and help guide me to making the rite choices to get to where u are creatively? By choices I simply mean as in deciding what materials I am to use etc?....i really hope u read this eventually!! I’ve only been sculpting for about a year, so I don’t think I have the kind of experience needed to be a good mentor/advisor. That said, I don’t mind answering a few questions every now and again. You can always hit me up on twitter @artchong or Instagram @Art_Chong, and I’ll be happy to help as time allows. Happy sculpting!

What do you do with all these sculptures after they're done?

Veeeery cool, such a dynamic sculpture! I didn't know about Raijin actually, so it was nice to learn a little bit about him. Nice technique with the super sculpey and mold putty, don't think I've seen anyone use those like you did before either. Again, great video! Your musings really tie the whole thing together. What I personally struggle with? Actually getting the work done, I have more than plenty art ideas (not just for sculpting) but they somehow also feel very daunting. Most of the time I know what I want to achieve but then just struggle getting there (or getting started even). It's what has kept me from making things for many years, so now I just try to finish things despite not feeling it and just try to get it 70% there instead of quitting early on out of frustration. And now I have found that afterwards I'm often quite a lot more happy with the result than I ever thought I could be while hitting the struggle wall. :) Now I'll just have to overcome my horrible procrastination tendencies next...

Thanks Cindy! I sometimes struggle with getting started, too 😭 It's getting easier as I gain more confidence but some days it feels like a real chore to get rolling but like you, if I grit through it I'm almost always happy with making the effort. Keep up with your work and happy sculpting!

I love how you make a design mistake and then FIX it. The difference between good artists in my opinion, and a great artist is that you keep sculpting until the story in your ❤ heart is visually before you. The best part about your videos for me, is your obvious talent and skill, and you DON'T give up! That is my biggest mistake. I think I am failing. So I give up. You are learning....big difference in perspective. Thank you for the important lession. :D poor u! The base was really frustrating....but you overcame it AGAIN! GREAT job!

I absolutely adore watching your videos. You make things look so easy and push yourself into perfection. I always laugh when you say half way into the video "let's actually start sculpting" after having run through enough ideas to make 10 good sculptures and defining them to an extent that others would call finished 😂 What I enjoyed a lot in your new video was the little technical details about the clay, the heating before putting wires in or cooling an area down to lock things in place, the epoxy glue etc. I'd love to see more like this in future videos. Maybe you could slow down on doing a head sculpt so we can get a better idea of how you do it? I noticed that you put little white balls in first for eyes but later they are covered with the clay? And one final question is how you preserve your sculptures? The medium oil based clays seem to have a surface that can easily be ruined by sunlight, dust wiping etc. Do you have some kind of fixative that works for you? Any information about the additional tools and little background helper media would be awesome. Thanks for sharing your art with us. It's super inspiring. 🎨

Hey Gast, thanks so much for watching! I’m glad to know the additional technical info is useful to you. It’s a struggle for me to figure out what is too much for the general audience and still be interesting to sculptors. In the next sculpt, I hope to make something a bit simpler and explore the finer details of sculpting rather than staying with just the big picture. I’m still figuring out what works myself so we’re kind of exploring this together, haha. As to the plastic balls, they're just a quick and easy way to do eyes. I get much more control over eyelids with the balls so I like to use them when the scale is very small like this (1:8 or so). They’re also somewhat translucent white so when they get sunken in to green clay they kind of take on the color of the stuff around it, but the balls are exposed in the finished sculpt. About preservation…. I don’t, lol. You’re right that oil based clay never hardens and can oxidize and be hurt by sun light. The shelves they’re on don’t get hit by the sun but otherwise I just let them sit. The only thing that’s happened so far is the surface gets harder and less tacky. One day, if I can ever afford it, I hope to buy a good 3D scanner and printer so I can preserve these digitally. Hope that helps and thanks again!

You and Dr. Garuda are two of my favourite artists..but personally,I think you have the edge lol. Amazing work sir,I’m just getting into sculpting,I’ve transitioned from drawing and wood carving,my first piece is hellboy,which I’m doing at the moment in das air dry,detail with it is challenging to say the least since I don’t have a kiln,I was thinking of super sculpture but the wife wouldn’t be to happy with stuff in the oven lol,then I’ve spotted chavant nap but it doesn’t set,can you give me some advice if you don’t mind,but absolutely love your art man,thank you,Lee👏👏👏👍

Haha, thank you. That's very kind of you to say. I watch Garuda all the time too.:) Super Sculpey doesn't leave bad smells or anything, so I think you'd be fine sticking it in a home oven (Most people do). If you're just starting and looking for general advice... I would say just sculpt whatever you feel like and have fun. That's how you'll stick with a hobby is if you find it fun and rewarding. If you have a specific question, feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to help if I can. Shifflett Brother's sculpting forum (facebook group) is a great resource/community as well.

Question about the clay, it's not permanent, so what do you do with these sculpts? Do you make molds out if them and make permanent copy's? Or just leave them as is? What happens in a heat wave? Like there is no way I could use that clay in the country I live in
@ArtChongArt
@ArtChongArt Жыл бұрын
I just leave it as-is. You can mold and cast or 3D scan if you want it preserved. The clay is quite sturdy. It won't deform unless it's warmed up to 130-140F, or about 55c. My studio is around 23-26c

Man I need to ask you: Do you have any advices for a beginner in clay sculpting to learn anatomy ? Cause i tried to watch differents drawings of all the body muscles and stuff but I keep sculpting weird proportions when i begin my sculptures.
@ArtChongArt
@ArtChongArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Alois, thanks for watching first of all. To start, try to ignore details like rippling muscles and veins. Concentrate on having good proportions on simple shapes. Good proportions is about good RATIOs between body parts, and studying these can help a lot. (avg person is ~7.5 heads tall, etc) Another thing that helped me immensely is studying skeletons. Learning where the bony landmarks on the body are can really help you place muscles and keep them from becoming cartoony. Of course, skeletal proportions are also a fantastic way to learn proportions as well. Hope this helps and let me know how you get on!

At the 4 minute mark, watching the drums slowly droop with each frame cut made me nervous! I actually find the armature and building up the anatomy to be the worst part for me.

Oh you’re very observant :) yeah that thing was falling down again and again lol Luckily my particular process allows me to get away with pretty simple armatures most of the time, but I totally get you. I overbuild armatures so much whenever I have to :(
