In this video, I explain several differences between arteries, veins, and capillaries. Then I explain what the two numbers on a blood pressure mean.
0:00 Introduction
0:24 Arteries and Veins
6:38 Capillaries
7:39 Blood Pressure Readings
11:08 Blood Pressure Graph
13:22 What happens when you record a video during dismissal...

Yay, glad you've found them helpful! Yeah, I've found a lot of videos online are a little too intense for my students, so I tried to make these for my high schoolers to somewhat understand....but people in college and beyond have found them helpful. Thanks so much for the kind comment!

Always appreciate how systematically you present information. Each step is always so logical. I loved that you tried to bring in the history of mmHg. I think you meant to say barometers which we used to understand weather and air pressure. Barometers use mmHg as their units, and we use mmHg as our units for blood pressure because it is still a pressure measurement. Thermometers generally use degrees to measure temperature and the height of the mercury in the thermometer was not usually measured. Instead, thermometers were manually calibrated by putting mercury in boiling water and an ice-water bath.

Mercury was used in barometers and manometers to measure the pressure needed to lift a column of it that is x mm high. Its use in thermometers was based on its expansion as it warms.

Hi Dr. Siebert. Do you take questions from us about medical issues, such as blood pressure issues? I am a 54 yr old caucasion male and 90% service connected disabled US veteran. I have a very serious problem with my blood pressure that my VA doctors seem to be unable to figure out. I have chronic high BP even while on daily BP meds. My BP sometimes rapidly increases into hypertensive crisis, causing me to have to go the ER. Alawys it is the same: the ER checks to see if I had a heart attack (which I have never had), and then sends me home. Because of this problem, I have been to the ER well over 30 times (mostly by ambulance) in the past 3 years. No one seems to have an answer as to why these life-threatening hypertensive crises happen. Worse, they don't seem to be making much of an effort to figure it out. This condition has disabled me, and I need help figuring this out so I can finally move on with my life! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your videos!

Great explanation thx. A Question if you will; Common sense tells me that narrow veins and arteries will cause a higher blood pressure readout due to increased force. Is this so?
@SiebertScience
@SiebertScience Жыл бұрын
You're correct! One of the ways that the body regulates blood pressure is the constricting and relaxing of arteries. They constrict to increase pressure and relax to lower it.

Great video, but I don’t understand how the arteries can have plague as they leave the heart, surely it’s the veins that cause the heart attacks that take blood to the heart.. If there is plague in the arteries surely that’s caused from a heart attack..?! ❤️🙏🏻

I note the differences between arteries and veins however they have essentially the same structure. Why is it that plaque only forms in arteries and not veins. Logically blood pressure and the amount of oxygen in each is the only difference and why should that matter? 😂Great introduction.
@SiebertScience
@SiebertScience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and great question! I really don't know, and a quick internet search doesn't show any clear answers. One idea (that I have no evidence for, just speculating): Maybe there *is* plaque buildup in the veins, but because the veins have more space inside, have a lot of alternative pathways of veinous flow, and because they can end up deforming (like varicose veins), the plaque buildups don't matter nearly as much as they do in arteries (where blockages cause stroke or heart attack). But again, that's just a thought...I don't really know.

Actually, your BP is not good. Pulse Pressure (PP=SBP-DBP) is 44. I am 67. My resting heart beat rate (RHR) is about 46, PP is about 36. That is the biological age of my cardiovascular system is younger than of yours. Yet, I am struggling to get PP to below 30 and RHR to below 40, as it was in my age of 18. You are aging quick. Sorry for the bad news. Nowadays, sickness is becoming a norm.
