It’s interesting that the developers did not believe that people were going to be scrutinizing the character creation in the benchmark. That thing hasn’t been updated in a decade and it shows.

i think it is more on they want to listen to their customers. it is benchmark, tool to stress-test your pc not sneak peek. they CAN ignore the complains but no, Yoshi P listened. So for me, the updated benchmark is a gift from Yoshi P.

25:00 "Why the eyes look dead" it's not really customization in this case, it's just the specular highlight. It's that little white dot in the eyes that we're used to seeing it there 100% of the time and when it's not there all the time (like in real life), we think it's not as appealing.

I play a dark elf in FF14 since the beginning of time, ngl the graphical update absolutely elevated the look of him. He looks amazing in the benchmark and CAN NOT wait untill I get my hands on it in live servers!

I think it's odd that her Viera has shine on the lips but the other 2 don't and even Kyoko's character's lips have shine so a bit odd that something like that is hit or miss. Ideally more options would allow people to add or remove that shine like other games if they're going for an upgrade, don't have to be a massive change if that don't work but still

I think the standard face meshes they showed us at London (the odd face morph animation) play a role, especially with mouth shapes. If every WoL now has to share the same face geometry, this likely imposes restrictions when re-creating the old faces. For example I noticed that all characters that used to have parted lips had their mouths closed in the benchmark, so it might be a requirement of the new system that mouths must be shut when the character's expression is neutral, and if so I don't think a "fix" is coming. Unfortunately, that changes the personality of the character and some players will be understandably upset about that. This is still a win for the game because this will probably let them mocap facial expressions at scale without having to do manually for every race and gender. You can already see the WoL's face being much more expressive in the benchmark. For example in the village scene the current WoL would just nod at the creature before picking up the map, new WoL's expression is more natural.

Yeah, that's the mindset I have as well and what I noticed too. I remember roughly pre-male viera reveal there was an interview where Yoshi-p mentioned how the new viera and hrothgar races had effectively created a second and third pipeline for making gear etc due to how they were made as opposed to the old races. and while this was more in response to the question of hats and hair at the time, he had how they had had discussions about bringing it together into a single pipeline due to the resource intensity of maintaining different pipelines for that. It certainly made sense to me based on that response and later tidbits that this was the direction they were going in, and so full reconstruction of all the heads had to happen. I definitely can agree that in some ways it sucks to find that your WoL face presets now don't look EXACTLY like your old ones (in the sense that polygons/geometry inevitably HAD to change on a fundamental level) to create that parity and ability to morph between races, but as a whole I still see the future gains to be worth the pain of not having your face look the same. The biggest benefit I can see is that we should hopefully see the backlog of hats and such start to roll out and not be as much of a production bottleneck going forward.

I swear when they first mentioned the graphical update they said it would take time and that they would prolly get 1-2 races done per cycle but then they magically got all the races done in time for DT. I think that's the reason why the fidelity of each race is so drastically different because it seems like they rushed the process to get them done before Dawntrail.

its because you also play other games, maybe or just dont have much time and just log-in to raid? i have my down-times (nothing to do) and i resort to trying ScreenShots. Trust me, its another player skill you want to have for when you clear stuffs. taking REALLY good pic is not that easy.

I feel like even with the updated benchmark, it won’t matter cause the final game will prolly look much different from event the updated benchmark. So we just might have to wait till the expansion comes out in order to change our characters to how we want them to look from now on.

alsp ppl seems to forget that characters look 5x times worse in the characters creator menu than in game (talking about current version idk if they fixed it in the benchmark)

Well technically you will if you really do gathering or any open world events. The biggest thing probably for those who really use newer systems since older games suffering a lot from graphic or loading issues.

Personally I spend more time looking at the world than my characters face. I want the character to look as nice as possible, but I spend about 95% of the time looking at the back of their head. Stuff like grass physics, mount tilt, lighting, and textures matter significantly more to me personally.

All that she mentioned had zero effect on my Dunesfolk male lala. Dead eyes and no soul? My milky white eyes tells there are no soul from the getgo. Lips shine? We literally have a minus sign as a lip. And the gaunt? We have none, our cheeks are just round as always been lol.

Idk maybe because I am a guy with little care about character appearances but the whole time I was watching this video in my mind I was thinking about how cool the next ultimate would be and the newer relic weapons. 😭😂

I don't have that many complaints about the benchmark, but the lips are the worst thing on all races. Arthars is totally wrong that it looks more real. Humans do have unique shapes to their mouth, not just the outer lines but the inner too. The benchmark mouths are all flat and look painted on like doll mouths. It's not remotely realistic looking lol

@@CulturedDegenerate them being more jagged is what gives it the illusion of it being fuller. Because they have more polygons now, those jagged edges have been smoothed out, which unfortunately makes it look flatter. If they wanna fix it they have to give the lips actual volume instead of just smoothing out the polygons. This is just speculation of course, but it's what I think happened.

The only thing I'm not liking on my female Viera in the upgrade is the eyelashes. They added more eyelash to the Viera in the upgrade and imo it doesn't look good to me. It looks like she just has this big bushy ring of black fuzz around her eyes and I hate it. In the current build she has much less eyelash, the minimum or close to the minimum possible. Apart from that I do like everything else, but damn can I please tone down the eyelashes?

I honestly don't care to be honest as long as the game is fun and it work / run well .... the character to me is fine... maybe im just a dude, but whatever i'm happy with the change. I am attach to my character I think we all if we play the game for 10 years right....I never change my character much or switch race i did maybe 3 times, but always went back to the my original style, but yeah i hope the strife hair and the new change looks better on my character umm also we get a fantasia so I can redo my charactter i dont do really much to it like some people do, but im still attach my character i love this game i play it everday for 9 or 10 years idk is been awhile i have over 15k hours on this game lol and that not including the time i played on ps4 back in the day lol.. yeah this is my game i hope they make everyone happy.

These people have spent so much time on this game staring at its unnaturally harsh shadows, skin with zero reflectivity, and gross wax paper filter all over the screen that if shit doesn't look oddly gray-ish green and with horrible flat lighting, then the game looks gross. This is some Stockholm syndrome. I'm elated that the wax paper finally seems to be gone after ten damn years, and that skin finally has gone back to not looking like playdoh. Contrast and colours are one of the losses from 1.0 I've lamented the most. Now PLEASE fix the character animations again. Oh, and I don't know what kind of lipstick they're used to seeing, but no lipstick will ever make an upper lip look that shaded. Only a weirdly angled spotlight will. And the specular reflections are finally dynamic again instead of being baked in like an anime character, so yeah, you won't always see sheen even in an unlit scene because that's not how light works. THAT's a massive improvement. Or, well, more like a couple of steps back to where the game was? I hope they're not actually going to backtrack some of the improvements to appease the weirdos in this game, but if history is anything to go by...
