You all got it wrong and have a stereotype opinion, Mary loved Arthur, but because of his loalty to gang and his outlaw life, she couldn’t live a normal life with him, and her family was against that too. Mary begged Arthur many times to go with her, but even rejecting all of her requests, she still will send you a letter, meaning that she cares. She did nothing wrong, yes Arthur deserved to be loved, but after losing his son and wife before he understood that he can’t live a bad life and hope good things will reach him, and eventually it will affect those who he loves. At chapter 4 he was even more sick, so he couldn’t even think of getting together with Mary, but deeply inside he was dreaming of it. Mary ain’t no manipulator, or selfish, nor annoying, she has no one, because her only man was Arthur, means she is loyal, and even after that she gives Arthur her ring and sends a letter, which means she ain’t selfish. Women tend to be more emotional, so her “Oh Arthur” is a regular thing.

I think this was perfect. You can sense how much hurt and love is between these two and it makes Arthur's choice to stay with Dutch even more tragic. He really did give him everything. His life, his chance at a normal life and even the love of his life.
