That feeling is real there’s a real sense of loss you experience seeing a character you invested so much time into and watched them change also all the legendary trapper cloths all the progress and all the things you weren’t able to do with Arthur are also gone with him so that feeling of loss is felt in a literal loss of time and progress along with a well written character and story it makes the death feel real because you as the player feel genuine loss. It’s actually an incredible life lesson, sometimes we make plans and they don’t happen or we feel like we miss out on “what could have been” but what matters most is how we spend our lives and the end of our lives, spreading small acts of love and kindness will go a long way and the people you help along the way will remember you for your actions.

RDR2 saved my life. That’s not to say I would have died without it, but it is to say I wouldn’t be the man I am today if i never played it. When I first picked it up I was in the worst slump of my life, I was 14 and my dad has passed. My life before that wasn’t easy in enough of itself but I was surviving. After he died I gained nearly 100 pounds and was stuck in the house, nearly dropped out. A month after he died RDR2 came out, to which originally I had no interest because I was never one for cowboys. But I heard rockstar was making it and I saw a video of the gunplay which made me pick it up. My first play through I didn’t do any side missions or hunting or anything really, I just sped through killing anyone and everything. I got the bad ending, although I still tried to help John Arthur died with little dignity. Then I finished the game and replayed it one more time, trying to be good and going against my own instinct to rush through and get cool kills wherever I could. I started to pay attention to the story, and it was the first story in my life that I believe truly resonated with me. For all my life I’ve never believed myself worthy of redemption, I’ve always believed that my nature was inherently bad. That I had to be bad because no one was going to be good to me except for my mother and father. I had done bad things by that point, things that to this day I am ashamed of. Things I regret. I thought I was bound to live a bad life, doing bad things and being pushed and pulled by the whims of an uncaring and cruel world. But then during that replay I saw the impacts of my actions. I saw that choosing the right choices, doing the right thing even when it meant consequences upon me or losing out on cheap thrills that it could change the world around me. That I could make an impact. This game started me down the path to becoming better, a path I am still walking wearily today. I am trying my best every day to do right where I can do right, to be the change I want to see in this world. I recently picked up the game again, because I have lost even more then I ever thought I could have lost. I have lived more in these past 5 years then I could have ever thought I would, done more saw more and have left my mark. This game put me on a path I don’t believe I would have ever started down If it hadn’t came into my life. I can say with certainty that I am a better man for playing this game, and as I replay it now I hope I can regain the footing I have recently lost after all the pain I have suffered after my dads passing. Unrelated suffering that has shaken me to my core, I hope that this replay gives me the same solace as it did all those years ago.

Trying to do the right thing is honorable. But trying to do it without God is meaningless. God doesn’t ask us first to do the right thing. He asks us, first, to seek him. If you open up the book he left for us, you will find more meaning, hope, and love than you could ever get from this world. In every person, there is a feeling that they long for something that they will never find in this world. That should be a good enough reason to believe that there is something beyond this. Read that book. Search, and you will find. God bless

I had medium honor throughout my first run but I went back for Dutch at the end because I was so mad at him and thought justice should be brought upon him. My ending with that path was different that the one showed in this video, however. Micah didn't stab me, Arthur convinced Dutch that Micah was a rat and they both ran off. I was left there to die somewhat peacefully in the burning camp. It was an absolutely gut wrenching ending but I knew John was going to be safe no matter what and I needed to see things out once and for all with Dutch.

Truly both the low honor endings are absolutely gut wrenching and leave you telling yourself "I wish I did better..." During Arthur's last ride you'll notice how the music is not just sad but also scary and chilling as opposed to when he has high honor which is a nice detail. When you make Arthur dishonorable it's like you're taking away his true self, his dignity, his genuinity etc... All things considered I'm glad you at least chose to help John at the end which was basically like an atonement. Arthur has a great place in my heart as one of the best video game protagonists and It would wound me to see him go out bad...

On my second playthrough I played low honor. Then Arthur got tuberculosis. After that i noticed the game gives you so many options to revive your honor and because of that i went from low honor to the highest honor there is. I feel like the devs want you to play the game in the first 5 chapters with low honor. Than in the last chapter make you change and become a good man. Arthur Morgan is one of the best dynamic protagonists ever written. And you can choose if you want Arthur to be a dynamic or static protagonist and that's why red dead redemption 2 is one of the best story games ever made. You have the full choice to pick what ever path you want and let that path speak to you at the end of the game.

What an astoundingly excellent video essay. Bravo. I have long since 100%’d the game, and scoured the entire map, but the bit about the poem showed me that there is still so much I had left uncovered. Like you, I played my first play through low honor, seeing it like another GTA. After the ending, it didn’t sit right with me, so I sought to play again while doing all I could to keep Arthur alive as long as possible. I took advantage of the glitch that lets you get to black water as Arthur and explored the map as him as I felt he should be the one to experience those moments. Come to find out, the devs must have thought of this as I noticed Arthur has unique dialogue options, and diary entries in those locations. This game changed my life, and I mourn the fact that I have finished it. This video perfectly highlights why. It’s amazing to watch others play the game for the first time and see them appreciate the beauty of this wonderfully tragic story. It’s hard to bring my self to play the game again for these reasons, but I look hopefully towards the future when another game might give me that feeling all over again.

@@PremoSaysThings Appreciate the reply! I originally played this game as a murder-hobo, killing any and every NPC I crossed paths with just because I could. I had the cool guns, the fast horses, and I was the untouchable main character. They were all just NPCs with no contribution other than to serve me in some way. There are so few games that impress any meaningful repercussions on the player that I had assumed this game would be no different. The life that the writers have painstakingly breathed into this game is unmatched. It's one thing to have a honor system, but it's a whole other to have dialogue interactions, cut scenes, and missing or further developed characters to back it up. When you help a guy out, and he ends up thanking you in another area much later in the game, you feel it. For me, one moment that sticks out is finding Downes' wife as a prostitute in Annesburg. There is no reason to have her there, or to continue her story other than to make you feel something. Further, her way of life sadly does make some sense as to what you might expect to have happened historically. It's been a while since I've played, so I don't know if the method to get to Blackwater as Arthur still exists or has been since patched, but I played on PS4 when I did it. Usually I've found games get patched on PC before consoles, so I wouldn't be surprised if you can still do it. I haven't opened the game since I took Arthur as far as possible in 2019 or so. That said, the fact that you can make a video all this time later, and I can watch it and still get flooded with all the feelings I felt playing it for the first time speaks magnitudes not only to the writing of the game, but also for your effort in composing a video essay in your own time about your own thoughts and feelings while experiencing the story yourself. So thank you for that and please do continue making quality content such as this.

The first time I played the game I did highest honor making every good decision no matter what in 3rd person. It was an amazing game and I loved it through and through. The second play through was in first person, and I made every bad decision no matter what… it was a profoundly different experience. Honesty it felt like two completely different games. I’ve beaten it a few times since then and done whatever I wanted since then, but I’ll never forget those two play throughs. They are forever etched in my memory as the two possible pillars of this games potential. If you haven’t done a full play through with low honor, give it a go. I recommend it highly. The dialogue is different, the missions are different, all the characters in the game treat you different… it’s a different game. I’m doing a play through currently on the PS5 and I’m doing everything and taking my time doing so. It’s been wonderful collecting specific animal pelts to make the gear I want. Upgrading each camp fully before moving on. Also, as per tradition… doing everything I can to mess with and hurt Micah the whole time. Thanks for the awesome content, it’s awesome so many people still connect over this game. It’s still a masterpiece. Cheers everyone 🤙

"I wasn't disappointed in the story, I was disappointed in my actions within the story" As a 45 year old man who's been playing video games for 4 decades now, I can an objectively state that RDR2 is the greatest narrative ever told within the medium of gaming. A man who wants to do good, but keeps doing wrong. A man who wants to believe in something, yet struggles. It's a story as old as Romans. It's not a "hero's journey" in the typical sense, but in a mosaic one. A broken man unqualified to do the right thing, gets to do so while in reflection of his own life coming to an end. He's afraid, yet aims for what's right despite that fear, despite the past that he feels defines who he is. Excellent video man!

Great video game essay man! You hurt my feelings when you shot the horse in the beginning LOL. I'm on my second play through and I ended with high honour again....but instead, I went to get the money to experience the other ending... On my first run, I did everything I could to make sure Arthur got healthy lol...like spending time in New Hanover or Big Valley to get dry air lol and eating healthy/taking medicine...but nah...our boah was dying...I was in denial! 10/10 game. Certainly my no.1 game

Out of 7 complete playthroughs, I've only ever forced myself to be bad in 1 of them, just to see all the low honor dialogue and cutscene. And gotta say it wasn't easy maintaining low honor the entire game. Especially after Arthur's diagnosis, everything in the game is constantly nudging you to improve your actions and help others to earn your redemption. Every stranger mission in Ch 6 rewards honor for just completing them. And that final debt collection mission from Strauss rewards a huge chunk of honor too. So I had to go out of my way to kill and rob random people to maintain low honor in Ch.6. I gotta say, that ending was tough to watch, but if anything made this whole thing worth it, it was that soundtrack when you choose to go back for the money instead of helping John. That was straight up badass, the way Arthur finally realized his time has come and faced the music like a warrior. Straight up cold, the way he went after Micah and Dutch. Felt cool af, even tho it clearly didn't end well for him.

I just finished my first ever play through and played dishonourable at the start and when Arthur changed, my heart also changed and so I made good and honourable decisions…alas, not only was it not enough to make me more honourable on the scale, I also had no idea there were multiple endings. so fast forward to the peak, to that horrid moment of Arthur getting shot and I weeped. I still haven’t gotten over this days later. I’ve never cried in a video game nor ever been as emotionally attached. I was ruined. you’re a good man Arthur Morgan. what a masterpiece.

Wow what an excellent video! Your narration and editing skills are great. But damn I’m so glad that I did a high honour play through from the start without even knowing what that really entailed. Seeing that last clip of the coyote descending into a cave (symbolic for hell perhaps?) made me feel genuinely sick to my stomach But at the same time as horrible an ending for Arthur as this was, it is a brutal gut punch that at the end of the day he was just a man, no amount of “protagonist” status would protect him from that, he died the same way so many nameless npcs that you’d kill in a low honour play through do :’) and that’s pretty poetic, however soul crushing

My favourite way to play this game is definitely starting low honer and trying to change at the end when my Arthur was diagnosed with TB he saw the wolf then that's when I started to change I made sure I spoke to all the gang members, give money to charity, and then the final mission I choose to save John and this is what pushed me to the high honer end basically just neutral but when he died he saw the deer instead of the wolf which shows Arthur's redemption

I have had serious have fun with the way I make Arthur conduct himself throughout the chapters. You craft your redemption arc with the honor system. I personally like to play Arthur as slightly more dishonorable, helping people usually out of pity, or for some sort of return forcibly or not, then eventually stop being a tool to folks near the last few chapters. I’ll still save jimmy brooks though

I've never agreed with the message to a youtube video more. I am currently half way through my first play-through, however I knew the ending long before playing. I just thought it was another story game that sure might be pretty good, but i could never imagine the impact RDR2 and Arthyr Morgan could have on my life. I tried to tell myself to stop being so weird about it because it's just a video game but i truly couldn't get Red Dead out of my head, at all. I also knew the importance of the honour system to the plot long before playing and that was another thing that i thought wouldnt affect me. As soon as i started the game I fell in love with Arthur as a character and his story and I knew from that moment that i would do everything in my power to achieve the best possible outcome for this man. RDR2 is still the only thing i can think about and I concur to what you said about the game making me genuinely change aspects of my life for the sake of what's right and honorable. I owe alot to Read Dead and Arthur Morgan, and i'll never forget that.

Personally, I think that Arthur getting shot by Micah isn't really a "bad" ending. It's my preferred way to end Arthur's story, because going out with a bullet in him is how he wanted to go out, according to something said at one of the campfire talks. He still beat Micah, and John was safe.

I did a play through based on the idea of reverse morality. I did everything as absolutely evil as possible. Always having posses coming after you gets old, but it's easier when you can just shoot the horses lol. The only limit was city limits. The game doesn't really work if you can't go to the gunsmith, or play poker, etc. The other hassle is arrows. Killing everyone you encounter without causing a fuss means going through a ton of arrows. The gang's reaction when you casually kill people during missions is pretty good.

It's been a while since I've played the game. Never touched it after first playthrough. I just can't. However, I also feel it made me a better person and changed my life for the better. I was never a bad person and I would say I was raised well, but it made me rethink my purpose in this world. I started helping people, volunteering, adopted a dog, I donate blood regularly, I donate money to charity, I give my old clothes, electronics and furniture to people in need. All of that resulted in meeting new people and business opportunities. I went from not knowing where I'm headed in my life at 21 to owning a house and my dream car at 25. I still love giving back to people, making them happy, seeing them smile and being genuinely grateful for even the smallest things. Give and it will come back to you! Have an awesome 2024 everyone, you're the hero of your story. As one very emotional part of the game says: "Shine light into darkness."
