This is an anti -war song .The subjects are Irishmen and it demonstrates their contempt for British rule in their Country.

I have been a fan of this song since Bob Dylan did a cover of it. This is the fist time seeing this beautiful version. Thankyou.

Dylan at his best, giving that energy and subtle, constant variation to the playing and singing. Makes the song sound like an old sailor looking back 😃

@@steinbauge4591 yeah Dylan's is a much more gritty and salty version, where this is polished and chior boy perfect perfect.

A fine rendition to be sure but Paul Brady's 1977 version reigns supreme. No better version exists. Listeners will get a better bang for their buck if they can read the lyics as the song unfolds. Just brill !

There is a video of him performing it the day after his 70th birthday. In the same key and to me it sounds just as good.

Agreed , I go back to it regularly , playing phenomenal !

I agree with you. Solo versions can be found on KZbin when he was younger, and later in his career. There is also a version where he sings with Planxty that is also memorable.

I love his performance. I ALSO love the support of his mom and dad. (I surmise this here, because I don't know them at all, at all.) Just the same, the father is a dead giveaway, and the mother has an incredibly close resemblance to Mr. J.L. Hogg.) GREAT PERFORMANCE!!!

If the likes of "Corporal or Sergeant or Captain or General" Arthur McBride was in charge - 19 y.o. Private Willie McBride would have made it back alive.

I think that Arthur McBride Is set 100 years earlier than Willie McBride, in the Napoleonic wars rather than WW1

@@jimbrennan3953 agreed, but while technology, equipment, modes of transportation and uniforms certainly evolve certain other aspects of life in the armed forces does not change.
