It should be noted... that Smallrig cage is the OLDER VERSION. For the A6400/A6500, get the newer Smallrig "CCS2310" and the "2318" wooden hand grip. Fits like a glove on the A6400 and is designed more like the uurig version (with better cutouts/mounting points). It also doesn't block the IR receiver. Otherwise... great video as always! :-)

I have the SMALL RIG cage on my a6000... My camera is definitely more comfortable to hold now, especially since the 18-105 F4 stays on my camera most of the time!!

The smallrig cage you have its specially designed for a6300/a6500 and those have a bigger grip compared to a6000. There is a dedicated new cage for a6400 too which comes with a similar grip to the uurig.

I agree with your assessment of the SmallRig. I have it on my A6500 and the wooden grip is just, well... weird! I kind of got used to it, but it defeats the concept of having a small camera. Gripping the big Nikon D500 or D850 feels fit to the size, but this SmallRig is strange. I was able to mount a boatload of gear onto the cage, so yes, it has the benefits of carrying more and being connected, but it is not the walkabout camera fixture I'd keep on the camera. I was unaware of the UU Rig having already bought the Small Rig Cage. I do find the grip really comfortable so maybe I bought the right one. One little quibble though. The retaining screw on the base of the cage tends to loosen. I have a Sony A6300 which I love. Your channel is just perfect for me and I'm sure for many other Sony Mirrorless owners. I live in the UK.

If you would of came out with this review a few months earlier I would of bought the UUrig instead of the SmallRig. With that being said I am happy with the SmallRig either way. I think it’s a great cage for my first a6000 entry camera to take photos traveling. Thanks for the reviews I appreciate your input.

Nice setup! I'm considering buying the 2310 cage and 2318 grip as well. However I've read in a comment that the grip is a little slippery. What's your experience so far?

Christopher Rudolph personally, I haven’t had any issues at all with the grip feeling slippery. I used the 2310 cage for a couple months without the grip and it definitely helped. I put the wood grip on about a week ago and personally, I really really like it. I have really large hands so it fits me very well! If you buy the cage and grip and you find that the wooden grip is a little slippery then it can easily be fixed with some grip tape. They sell some great grip tape that’s meant for firearm handles that won’t get sticky or come loose. I think you will love it as is though.

You can check Also the L-bracket of smallrig for the a6400. I think its could be lighter version with wood grip. Yes it does not offer the same protection... TBH my camera (a6500) came with a smallrig, really small, covering only one side and bottom + the wooden handle. Tried it a few times and then removed it again. As a hobby photographer I see no point in having it on the camera. Adds weight and I don't mount anything on the holes. When I don't use the camera I have it stored in a small decent bag over my shoulder where I can quickly take it out if I need to. I can't help it but I really like the way the camera feels in my hands and the cage is removing that feeling for me.

Yes, it does. The body of the A6000 and A6400 is VERY similar and fitment is excellent with the UUrig.

I have small rig cages for both my 65-6400 and they both have the little Allen bolt in the top right for added support. The IR isn’t blocked. And my wood grip is a matte finish. Looks nothing like yours. I think mines actually wood. I think you have either the wrong model or an older model like someone else said.

Btw, that isn’t the only other option by smallrig. Go to smallrig’s website and type in 2310 & 2318. You’ll see a grip that specifically designed for the a6400. It looks a lot like the Urig cage shown in this video.

Why Me I personally love the wooden grip that’s made for the smallrig cage. I believe the model number is APS2318. I’m 6’2” tall with big hands. The cage with that wooden grip makes it feel much better in my hands.

Seems I must be one of the mega small number of people who don't use these camera for video/blogging etc. That said, the a6000 range are really small form bodies and even with a Sigma 16 1.4, not to mention a Sigma 18-35 1.8, told the body securely, some form of extended base and sides is required. There was a site dedicated to making classy after market hand grips, but cannot locate it now. Will be getting one of these when my a6400 arrives. Arthur, there would still be a huge market for a grip like these for the a6000. Can you please place some links for them. Many thanks.

For the cages in this exact video, I would agree the UU Rig is better. HOWEVER, the updated SmallRig cage and grip slightly best the UU Rig overall. It addresses every issue that Arthur talks about. Pt # CCS2310 and # APS2318

Super easy to fit and work with. I did issues with the grip with the Sony FE 50mm f1.8 lens though due to its width and step out halfway down the barrel.. but no issues so far with my other lenses.

you bought the smallrig for the a 6500 there, which actually needs the space to the wooden handbracked, because it does have a bigger grip than the a6400. you should revisit this with the propper smallrig cage for the a6400 which fits like a glove

I have a Small Rig Cage which came as part of the eBay sale but, I don't really want a wood grip. I do have a matching metal handle for the top of the rig which makes it nice for low angle videos. I do wish that the cage had a slotted Arca Compatible plate area on the side of the camera so it could do double duty as a cage and an L bracket...

I accidentally got the smallrig for a6600...it happily has the top screw for the handle opening for added security, but I had to work the bottom so the battery works. I got the one in the vid with wooden handle for my other a6300 and it drives me crazy how much it wobbles in the cage because of the lack of the top screw! I’m returning and getting and hacking the a6400 cage.

Can you do a 30mm f1.4 Sigma vs 16-50mm kit lens comparison? I think it'd be interesting because around 35mm stopped down the kit lens is at its best, and the 30mm is the weakest Sigma prime.

Bought this....feels pretty good BUT..... IT BLOCKS THE HOT SHOE. Not completely but enough that neither of my Godox speedlights will function. The tightening ring contacts the frame in such a way as to keep the contacts from completely connecting. I now have to consider returning the rig or machining space into the frame...which I’m no happy about. YMMV. I wish you had tested the rig with theses accessories...which I purchased on your recommendation and have been great...as has the a6300. Do the other rigs block the hot shoe? Thanks for your constant flow of relevant info.

when I walk with camera in hand I usually hold the total weight just by the grip. Is the wooden grip sturdy enough for that? I mean, wood it's not the most sturdy material but I definitely need a bigger grip for my A6000

Yes it is. I use the newer cage + handle version with a metabones speed booster and a heavy tamron 24-70. Doesn't even flex the tiniest bit. I also hold the entire wait of the camera by the grip when walking around. Rock solid.

JR channel both grips are made of hardwood, just as handles are on cages one would use on a full sized cinema camera. You’re not going to break it.

I put a cage on my a6500 to help protect it. It felt horrible in my hands. It was removed chop-chop style and I'm only going to use the cage for video gigs.

Just a warning to anyone with small hands that the wood handle on the UURig may be better off left out of the equation. I found it much too large and slippery. I also was unable to get my finger tips between the grip and my bigger lenses, like I could without the wood. The cage alone actually improved the comfort of the existing grip for me.
