Auto Tracking explained at last! How to set auto tracking in video has been driving me nuts. I've looked everywhere on the web to understand why in video there's no "Tracking Expand Flexible Spot"; the main reason I got the a6400. From this explainer I guess it's just in Photo mode. And in video, I have to use the auto tracking mode. Why it's not available in video is one of the many quirks of the a6400... but at least I have a working solution! Thank you!

7:36 - THAT'S EXACTLY the problem I've been looking for someone to comment on. That focus pump. You're not talking about it but I'm curious about your thoughts on that. How do you avoid that? I notice it on flat surfaces of single tone. Like a wall, or something that takes up a considerable amount of screen real estate, like you demonstrated. Yes, darker environments also bugs out the auto focus, but I'm generally speaking about shooting a lit scene. That artifact looks distracting. Trying to get rid of it in post doesn't really work. Any thoughts?

wow. one of the best videos on this topic. I am usually pretty good at filming my workouts but for some reason I kept messing up and didn't get the best footage. I was out of focus and the background was. hard focusing on self with no one helping behind camera. anyways. I like the idea of face tracking and especially the idea of touch tracking. ill touch track the weights im using before I walk in frame and see if that works. thanks again!!!
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments PunchNugget and it all depends on if your face is in the frame or not. By default the Sony cameras will focus on whatever is closest to the camera unless it sees a face. Then the face will override unless you turn off facial recognition priority for autofocus. Tracking the weights should work great depending on your angle of course, but if your face is in the scene the camera should automatically track that if you have the Focus area set to wide or zone in particular... All the best, Jay

This was a excellent video... Explained things that others did not. I don't quite understand why you need the filter to reduce the s/s speed?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and when recording video there is a full that the shutter speed should be double the recording frame rate. So for example if I am recording at 4k/24p then I would want a shutter speed double 24 which works out to ~1/50sec. To maintain 1/50 of a second in bright conditions with a large aperture lens will often require an ND filter. Basically sunglasses for the lens, otherwise your shutter speed will be to fast and cause a more jittery movie...

Well the G7 is an awesome camera for sure, but I would rather have the larger sensor and versatility of being able to change lenses with the Sony A6400. If you want to save a few bucks, the A6100 is also a great more affordable option when compared to the A6400....

Hey! Thanks so much for this video. I have made it my 2022 goal to really step up my video quality on my channel. I have a Sony A6400 and clearly am not using it to its full potential. I was about to give up on it before I saw this video. I switched up my settings, based on your recommendations, and they improved most of my issues. But, I am still hung up on this weird bounce that I get. It seems like my background is always bouncing and it makes me a little nauseous when I watch my clips back. Any idea what could be causing this?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly not really... It's not supposed to happen, but it is for some people, especially when using the 16-50mm kit lens. You can mess with your focus area by making it smaller and change AF sensitivities to less which should help. Also, you can stop down the aperture to like f/5.6 which will increase the depth of field and should trigger the focus less also. I honestly do not know if this is an issue with the lens or camera, because another subscriber had this issue with the 16-50mm kit lens, but another with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens which is what use all the time and have never had the problem... Strange for sure.

This was by far the most informative video I have seen on the matter. Congratulations and thank you, you just got a new follower. I have a question about the nd filter and the shutter speed. Can you please clarify why you need an nd filter when you can set your shutter speed to 1/50 on the camera? Also is there a logic behind 1/50 for 4k? Thank you
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thank you! The purpose of the ND filter as it pertains to shutter speed is when you are trying to use a really fast aperture like F/1.4 for example. If you have a super fast f/1.4 aperture in reasonable bright lighting, you will not be able to lower the shutter speed to 1/50sec without over exposing. The shutter speed would be more like 1/200sec for example at that aperture. The ND filter will allow you to slow the shutter down by making it darker in front of the lens. This is great for those fast aperture lenses in brighter conditions. 1/50sec is used when recording @ 24p in either 1080 or 4k. If you are recording at 1080/60p you would want 1/120sec shutter speed, and if you are recording at 120p you would want 1/240sec shutter speed. For video you want to double the recording frame rate when it comes to shutter speed. That is best practice for natural looking footage. Otherwise if the shutter was faster, the footage will look a bit choppy when filming moving subjects. The 1/50sec shutter speed adds that little bit of motion blur on moving subjects which is what our eye is used to seeing in the real world. Be sure to check out this tutorial as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqWVfKNjZ9J2fqM

Thanks for this vid! So I understand face priority doesn’t work in 4K when hooked up to an external monitor, but should AF focus in general work in 4K video without the monitor? My AF little person symbol on my display keeps saying AF off (without using a monitor) and when I press the Fcn button, the option to turn it on is greyed out :( it says ‘this option is not available - file format: XAVC S 4K

Other features can make it not work like proxy recording for example. Yes it should work without an HDMI cable/ monitor plugged in.

Hi, is it possible to turn off the autofocus completely so that the entire image captured by the camera is sharp? Thanks Toby
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can turn off auto focus, but that has nothing to do with the entire scene being sharp. That is called depth of field and you would need still select an area to focus on manually. If you want the entire scene sharp, you will need to stop down the aperture in the lens to like f/11 or so as an example. Your explain is very clear bro thank youuuuu very much, do you have more information about Sony a6400 (low light best settings)
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 9 ай бұрын
Low light best settings would be the lower the ISO the cleaner the image, so using a fast aperture lens will help lower the ISO. Best to add lighting if possible when/ if the ISO is really so you can try and lower it.

Hi, how can I track my own face since I cannot be in front of the camera and touch the touchpad? My a6400 keeps shifting focus when I use wide instead of zone and becomes blurry for milliseconds driving me mad. Will registering my face help prioritize? I have my AF drive speed at fast now, since I want to focus quickly when I show a product but the AF tracking is at responsive. Should I put that one to standard instead?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, that is frustrating for sure. I would try and knock the AF drive speed down a notch or to from fast. I use zone to help keep the focus in heck. You have facial recognition on? If so, you will need to hide your face when you hold a product up also.
@MisiuAcademy

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jason (Loving the content). Yes I have facial recognition on, the problem is that my face loses focus and it seems to go to say my hands etc. I will do as you said, I will also experiment with a larger aperture and Zone instead of wide. Thanks!

Hi Jay - I have had my a6400 for a week and this is my first camera that isn't point and shoot. A question I have is when I connected to my monitor - which is HDMI 1080p - I saw myself but it was very grainy. From the computer input it is crystal clear. So without me sounding to much of a dummy did I have the cameras output set wrong? - I must admit to setting it to movie mode on the top wheel, but didn't adjust anything in the menus from straight out of the box. Please can you help. Thanks, Peter.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, when you say it is crystal clear from the computer input, what does that mean exactly? If the footage is grainy, that usually means the ISO is extremely high. The footage you see on the TV should look the same as what you see on the back of the cameras LCD screen. Although it is larger, so the noise might be easier to see on a large TV. I would recommend checking the ISO and seeing what it is at. HAs far as I know, no HDMI setting will cause this to happen.

@@Jason_Hermann Hello Jay and thanks for coming back to me. So I wanted to use my 27” computer monitor for was live monitoring whilst recording. Initially live it was grainy and I was disappointed. However after looking deeper in the settings in the camera for the HDMI output, I managed to get it with no grain at all. I guess like all things I should have read the instructions and not expected to just plug in and play. Cheers, Peter 👍😊

Really appreciate the tutorial (and in fact all your reviews) but I’m puzzled regarding the AF responsiveness section. I’ve been using Sony camcorders for decades on my travels, currently the AX33, and always shoot fully auto in FHD, never using any touch focus, face or eye tracking or other AF assist . The AF is always spot-on over the entire area of the screen, no matter what movement is going on in front of the lens, even when I’m tracking people or objects. I don’t “vlog” but on the rare occasions I have pointed the lens at myself my face has always been in focus with no need of eye or face tracking. I recently faced the lens to show something I had bought. I moved the small object in front of me, as you did with the remote, There was no delay in focusing on the object and both my face and the object stayed in focus together. The AX33 was in complete auto mode at f1.8 and wide zoom. I’m confused about this. As I’m in the market now for a hybrid camera rather than a camcorder (I want to get more into stills), your advice would be a great help.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig and thanks for the kind words about the tutorial. Your Camcorder in my opinion, has a more advanced and optimized AF system when it comes to video. It is smarter than the current mirrorless cameras in that regard I believe. Therefore it has predetermined settings for a given scene or situation that is being presented in front of it. The Mirrorless cameras also have smarts, but not the same thing from what I can tell, but the do have options like the responsiveness which I demonstrated in the video. As far as the depth of field goes when you put something in front of the camera, your camera has a 1/2.3" sized sensor and compared the to APS-C sized sensor in my A6400, that is very small and explains why both you and the product remained in focus at the same time. In addition, I was using a 30mm f/1.4 Lens which is not a wide angle like you were using which also affects depth of field. If you are looking for a hybrid camera, and are coming from the camcorder I would need to know what your budget is. The Sony A6600 (amzn.to/2zIT3iK) is currently the best quality and feature rich APS-C sized sensor mirrorless camera and is a fantastic option. I personally went for the more affordable Sony A6400 (amzn.to/30U0ZZB) which does not have a stabilized sensor, because I do a lot of video on a tripod, and I use a stabilization gimbal when filming on foot. The image quality on both these cameras is awesome! Check out my comparison video here for more info on the current APS-C models: If you want even better quality, you can go for the Full Frame Sony A7 III (amzn.to/2YgogU6), but that will cost you more, it's larger, heavier, and lenses are more expensive in general.

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks so much for your quick and detailed response, it’s much appreciated. Yes, I did look at the Sony 6600 although it’s somewhat over my budget once a decent lens is added. The 6400 does not have stabilisation which I need, and I don’t want to go down the gimbal route. Also, coming from camcorders I prefer a fully articulating screen, which is why I’m also considering the compact Sony ZV-1 as the specs for both video and stills are better than my AX33. Will you be reviewing the ZV-1? As I’m not a vlogger, I’m particularly interested in a review that looks at the camera for general film and stills shooting rather than concentrating on the face of the videomaker (groan), which the reviews I’ve watched do. However, I also have my eye on the Olympus OMD M5 III (which would make me a traitor to the Sony cause after decades) as it has weather-sealing, great image stabilisation and, joy of joys, an audio note facility for identifying stills (goodbye to written notes). So it may be a toss-up between the Sony ZV-1 (affordable) and the Olympus (with lens, double the ZV-1 price). Again, many thanks.

Wow Jason, you laid it all out! I'll buy an A6400 or 6600 tomorrow to shoot myself piano/singing from the corner of my tiny music studio. I use Logic Pro X for audio, Godox UL150 for spotlight and FCPX for post. I look directly across the piano into the camera [6' or 7'].The area covered is about 4' high x 8' wide with only a foot remaining behind myself and the corner I'm wedged into. I don't shoot stills and the camera will never leave the stand. Q1]. Can I control on/off/record from the Sony remote app on an Ipad and seated for back/back takes? 2]. What lens for a wide angle art approach and some 'bokeh' as well, prime or an all round zoom? I watch repeatedly and appreciate your wealth of generosity. Cheers and HNY from Vancouver!
