Daniil Trifonov performs Liszt - Mephisto Waltz no. 1 in A major at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition (May, 2011, Tel Aviv).
Since its inception in 1974, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition is one of the foremost Piano Competitions in the world. Arthur Rubinstein, who gave his blessing to the competition, headed the jury of the first two competitions (1974 & 1977).
The competition, is held every three years in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Had to watch this again tonight. I don't know if many understand the privilege that it is to see and hear this performance. When Franz Liszt wrote and performed this there were no videos, no recorders, no radio, no TV, no anything except Liszt in person. The few invited to hear Liszt in person may never get a chance to see or hear him a second time. Can you imagine the thrill of hearing Liszt introduce this exciting piece of music. Wow, wish I had been there. But now we have modern recordings that capture performances like this one to revisit for all the time we remain. We can pick and choose and listen all day, anytime nearly any place.

On those times you said goodbye to someone never to know if you would ever cross paths again. You only listened to music if someone MADE music in front of you. Listening to Liszt play this piece was a UNIQUE experience, even for a King. The emotions were so much more intense than today, that I can watch Trifonov rock this masterpiece while I jewrk off watching powrn. It is BOOLLSHEET and things will never be the same.

Most likely you would have been poor, living in squalor and trying to not starve to death. If you had happen to be walking by and heard Liszt playing you probably wouldn't have appreciated it due to how terrible your life was. Once I sat in a mall piano and rocked a little piece called "Chanson a boire" from Reminiscenses de Lucrezia Borgia. I am positive no more than five people in the world can play that piece. No one gave a s. Nobody cares. A few claps and that's it. No major competitions won. No concerts, no nothing. Any low IQ rapper with two years of experience can mog me in fame, fortune and status.The few who cares about classical piano can watch Yunchan Lim instead, whose playing is far superior (or Will Wolfram for the same piece). And even said pianists are largely ignored. They are nothing compared with regular popstars who cannot read a nocturne. It completely lost it's magic, and I wasted my life on this before noticing. As a classic guitarist i prefer an interpretation with literally (hate this word) two missing notes but which bring me to another universe rather than a technically perfect performance. We musician all know how difficult is to give an appropriate interpretation to piece and how much you can transmit with that to people. Interpretation overall techniques, always. I suggest you to listen to the Lieberstraum by Listz, played by Mario Parodi, a dead classic guitarist… not technically perfect, but listen carefully to the emotion! Let me know what you think about what I said and about the piece I suggested you. I’m really interested on other people opinions!

Last year hear Daniil play the Rach 3 with the San Francisco Symphony. He received a standing ovation from the overflow audience with people shouting like hyenas. So much for Daniil's performing abilities. What a pianist does with his face, body, and hands is irrelevant to the actual performance. I loved his dramatic, lyric, and emotional playing of this Liszt gem but it really was a product of Daniil's youth. He might play it differently today! Being 83, I loved his youthful exuberance. That I could "storm" like he was able to do. God bless him for being able to do something I could never do. Being cynical about this kind of thing is outside the world of classical performance. Playing in a piano competition is not like playing in a recording studio. Bravo, Daniil! You are great and becoming even greater as you mature!!!

Yes. I would not say it is wrong to compare him with Horowitz (who I have mixed feelings about anyway) but I do feel there is something else at work with Trifinov that perhaps even Horowitz might have wished for; a greater sense of immediacy. It is as if the Mephisto is playing him, so much so that he has to almost rein it in and tame it. Quite incredible. Thank you for the thought William. Blessings!

Is there a pianist alive who has ever been able to play in concert passage 8:16 - 8:37 cleanly and without mistakes? Those jumps are about the most "devilish" thing Liszt ever wrote. Even Berezovsky flubs many notes here and he's about as mistake-free as they come.

History doesn't record any blind pianist who could do this, although Liszt was said to have pulled this stunt of blindfolding himself and playing his most difficult works.

I've NEVER got through the passage you mention without some mistake; and that creates its own adverse psychology.

I used to play this right before I injured my RH forefinger, and I remember those leaps traumatizing me so badly I was so relieved when I got to those cascading arpeggios in the RH, which I could handle effectively. I'd never attempt this in public then and I've never heard the best of them get through this passage w/o a blooper or two, most notably Khatia Buniatishvili who absolutely wrecks it trying to play it faster than anyone else. She a magnificent pianist but she should be ashamed of that performance and yank it, unless she doesn't own rights.

Daniil shows some unique interpretive talent here, providing new insights to an old war horse. What detracts from his performance is the many wrong notes (often a kiss of death in international competitions), including the very last note of the piece where he grabs a bit of B along with the A's. As he matures as a performer, he'll not allow nerves or unbridled emotion to interfere with accuracy -- and he'll be unbeatable.
